View Full Version : ACCLAIM IS NO MORE!

Well, almost. Read this article

http://cube.ign.com/articles/542/542718p1.html

Can't say i'm surprised. It's too bad though. The industry keeps making more dough for fewer and fewer companies. I never was really into anything Acclaim published but it can't be good when the industry is thriving and companies are closing their doors. Fuckin A! That "A" is for Acclaim!

THE ONE, THE ONLY- RCM

Good riddance to bad rubbish. They had a bit of a renaissance there for a while aroudn the time of the original Turok, but they've long since stamped all of that goodwill back into the dust from whence they came.

Me too, until I realize that out of, what, 10,000 games - maybe 3 of them were decent? They did this to themselves.

In fact, Acclaim was the first company formed in the U.S. as a third-party developer of NES games.

Here, as my highly detailed psuedo-chart shows, is Acclaim's current status

(barbeque of the press) ROFL (pit of financial troubles)

With EVERY SWING OF THE PENDULUM, Acclaim strays closer and closer to the brink. Actually, it's more like Acclaim's being pushed right into the pit of financial troubles, or something.

Acclaim will live forever in infamy.

Didn't they once offer to pay somebody a bunch of money to legally have their name changed to "Turok"? I don't think there were any takers.

There were a LOT of takers, and it wasn't that much money sadly enough.

Oh, wow... I'm not surprised by this. I think there may be very few games by them that I liked, and most everything they've published recently was total crap.

Proof of how bad Acclaim really sucks; if you look throughout the years and find games that they published that are actually good (Wizards and Warriors, Super Smash TV, first couple of Mortal Kombats) they were all developed by somebody else.

Yes, read the book 'Game over', Acclaim played a big part in USAs NES success.

Wasn't Acclaim formed from ex-Activision members?

I love the original Turok. I never liked ANY of the sequels. Even T2. I couldn't get into the second one. The first was fresh and kick-ass for the time. I loved it.

Ironsword is my favorite W&W game. The first game I ever beat... with a Game Genie and in general. First game I ever saw credits on. And the music was kick-ass.

Does this mean the Olsens won't be able to collect any money on their lawsuit against Acclaim? :hmm:

The reason I didn't like Ironsword was the fact that you pretty much needed a Game Genie to defeat it. It was a very cool game, but the completely random patterns of the bad guys and whatnot meant that success was pure luck.

W&W 1 was a bit easier and was completely possible to defeat without cheating, and W&WIII was difficult but made victory very attainable (you just had to never die, although you could "die" in those guild challenges which are where the real difficulty in the game lies). W&WX was also fairly easy to beat as long as you played through it a few times (just another one of those "memorize the sequence" bits).

Damn, This semi-sucks. Acclaim is overall, a crappy company, but they did make at least one good game (Vexx) and published many others (Double Dragon, Galactic Attack, Darius Gaiden)

I sure hope they can get The Red Star out before they close, or at least allow some other company to publish it. That game was lookin' great. And I guess we'll never see a vexx sequel. RIP Acclaim. Say Hi to Toaplan and Data East for us. :(

ACK-LAME. That pretty much sums them up for me.

Although I hope that Juiced and The Red Star get picked up and put out. I thought The Red Star was really good when I played it on the recent PS2 demo disc (it's on the Xbox one too).

I guess this what happens sooner or later. You rush out an untested, inferior product enough and sooner or later the money thing is going to get you. They did publish good games, except the good games were like 1 out of a 1000. Ironically enough, they are also being suied by Mary Kate and Ashley for destroying their image. Expect a big payout on that one.

I second that emotion. Rambo, W&W, Galactic Attack, I'd like to see those again.

See, you can only accuse Acclaim of PUBLISHING shit. You have to blame the totally stoned developers for CREATING the shit (in this case Imagineer...who has had cool games in the past, I don't know what the deal was with this...) Acclaim either imported games or payed somebody else to develop them.

So then what about the guy who made the poor decision to put out crap like that? Why not go back to the developer and tell them that their game is crap? What about the person who decided what games were going to be imported? Were they not concerned about quality?

Did any of them care that the games sucked, thereby leading them to poor financial success?

They did this to themselves, no matter how you look at it. Some companies are lucky, they can get away with selling crap since people still blindly buy it due to budget pricing/name branding/whatever. But that trend finally caught up to and backfired on ACK-LAME, just like it did to 3DO.

I can't say I'll really miss Acclaim. Yeah they published/created some good games over their life span but in retrospect many of their releases averaged on mediocre IMO.

As for the Bart Vs. the Space Mutants getting released in bad form it probably all had to do with the timing and the fact somebody paid a decent chunk of money for the Simpsons license. Couldn't rework it because it had to get onto store shelves. I've never played it but it looks as though there was a serious push for it (Game Players had it on the cover of two of their guides and there was a lot of advertising for it in the mags).

Developers don't put out crap on purpose - impossible milestone deadlines and executives with crazy ideas cause bad games. Developers don't fund themselves 100%, after all!

I'd say this - take a look at Bill Kunkel's "An Answered Prayer" (http://www.digitpress.com/archives/kunkel_batman_1.htm) article, which covers how his game development dreams were shattered by stupid execs.

From Gamasutra.com:

Acclaim Officially Files For Bankruptcy
According to New York Newsday, game publisher and developer Acclaim Entertainment has now ended the uncertainty over its fate by officially filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Central Islip, New York.

Acclaim listed assets of between $10 million and $50 million, and debt of more than $100 million in the filing. The company will now cease operating completely, and liquidate its assets in attempts to pay off the debt.

This final step comes after unsuccessful attempt to secure a $65 million loan in order to continue trading. The company's offices in Glen Cove, New York; Austin, Texas and Manchester, England closed late last week, with many employees locked out of offices and missing paychecks.

Turok isn't their franchise, though - Classic Media owns it and can license it to anybody they want to. So...it's basically down to those two (supposedly) finished games, I think. BMX XXX? Heh.

Worms 3D was developed by some british studio and published by Acclaim for the other consoles...I'm hoping someone else, like MS, will pick it up and publish it here in the states, but I'm not holding my breath.
