Just wondering everyones thoughts on this. The sytem had quite a few of them.
I'm going with Ultimate Basketball by Sammy. Substitutions (first console BB game with them?), great graphics, and solid overall gameplay. Tecmo NBA is great, but that flicker drives me absolutely nuts.
Anyone else?

I'm going to go with arch rivals.
but I can tell you one that isn't the best by far, roundball 2 on 2 challenge, I bought that game when I was a kid, it sucked then and I tried playing it again a few weeks back, it still sucks.

I loved playing Jordan vs. Bird back in the day... but now that I think about it... it sucked too. :-)
Ultimate Basketball, in my admittedly limited experience.

I'd have to go with the Technos one.

Probably the best two are Double Dribble and Nekketsu Basketball (not released outside Japan)

Tecmo NBA Basketball is pretty cool. I like the mini cutscenes when you make a cool play like a quick pass or dunk. I recommend it highly.

Double Dribble would be the best except for one glaring flaw: it's waaaaaaaay easier for player 2 to hit shots. I had a Double Dribble tournament in 1st year university and we soon realized that player 2 was *always* winning. Player 2 ended the tournament witha record of like 14-1 or something. To this day, me and my best friend cannot beat eachother with player 1. Who ever is player 2 wins every stinking time. Keep this in mind if you ever plan on doing some 8bit hustling ;)

Double Dribble and Technos' Nekketsu Basketball. The only problem with the Technos one, is that its apparently very rare in Japan, being a late Famicom release. Goes for a lot of money. It is however available in some pirate Kunio multicarts floating around.

I gotta go with Double Dribble. Everything is so smooth about that game and easy to control. I'm surprised there are a couple people who enjoy Ultimate Basketball. I remember renting that when it came out and I got my a$$ handed to me every time I played. The opponent stole the ball at will and ran up the score like I was junior varsity or something.
Hoops by Jaleco is probably my second favorite. It's 2 on 2 or 1 on 1, whichever you prefer and you can play with a teammate. There's even a fun little ending showing what the characters in the game went on to do with their lives.

Hoops was pretty good, but Ultimate Basketball just rocked. That was one of the early games where passing was so important. You don't pass or stand still, you're going to get stripped. It makes sense in an 8-bit sort of way. Then again, stealing from your opponent is just as easy.
Double Dribble was great at the time, but when only three players make their way down the court from each team, something is wrong. 2 always stay back. That always annoyed me.

It's full name is something like Nekketsu Street Basket - Ganbare Dunk Heroes. Like some of there other games it's almost more fun just to beat everyone up. There's is a translation patch if you want to try the rom out.

Double Dribble and Hoops. I thought I was the only one that was gonna be giving the Hoops love. These two are best played with anoter person IMHO.
Also enjoyed playing Arch Rivals and Tecmo. These are the two I like playing by myself.
I hated Magic Johnson's B-Ball and Harlem Gllobetrotters the most.

I'ma gonna say Double Dribble too. It's the first basketball game I've played, and it still remains my favorite. It might have to do with how awesome Konami is, I dunno. Hoops is good as well.

Yeah I'll agree with Hoops. The game is pretty underrated.

I'd have to go with the technos released only in japan Ganbare Dunk Heros. 3 hoops set up right on top of each and by using your special shot you slam dunk on all of them from the top hoop. Download the rom or purchase the famicom game (which is very rare for some reason).

I think Double Dribble is TERRIBLE. It was decent at the time, but has aged horribly.
TECMO NBA BASKETBALL all the way. Only good one I can remember...and it's VERY good.

That Dunk Heroes game is quite awesome. I recently scored a Famicom cart of it off of eBay for next to nothing, though it looks like a pirate cart. Doesn't matter much to me, as long as I can play it on my NES.

There was another NES basketball game other than "Double Dribble?"
I kid.
"Double Dribble" is one of two NES B-ball games I have experience with. And "Jordan vs. Bird" wasn't good. At all.
So "Double Dribble."
Can anybody tell me what LA's mascot was? A blue pickle? What the shit is that about?

I am surprised of the lack of comments on TECMO NBA BASKETBALL. It was the basketball equivalent of TECMO SUPER BOWL...though it didn't have an arcade feel to it. Only gripe is that it is too easy (much like TSB).

I dont think anyone besides me will choose this game but I like Magic Johnsons Fast Break for the NES. He was my favorite NBA player when I was younger so it was the only one I played :)

Didn't you see my pic? :hmm: LOL
Anyways, I don't really remember that game being any good. I just liked the fact, that Magic's head would appear after every shot, to tell you how good a "bomb" you threw, or something along those lines. :D

The most realistic is Tecmo NBA.
If you only want a "arcade" basketball game, go with Double Dribble.

According to the Official Nintendo Player's Guide, the blue thing is supposed to be a "wave". Or at least water.
