What's safer when your Ps2 is not in use? putting it in stand by mode or turning it off from the switch in the back?

Mine's been either being used or in standby mode since launch day. Seems to be pretty safe so far.

o_o I could never be comfortable with that. I ALWAYS completely turn off the system if I'm not using it. Half the time I'll unplug it too.

Yep, same here, either in standby or in use for about 2 years.

I think "standby" is equivalent of the glowing light on most VCR's.

i turn mine off

however i feel that turning it off may be similar to older computers where everytime you flick the switch itd send a jolt through the computer and basically kill like a day or something off its life span

but who cares, its cheap enough to replace

Stand by. So far it has not spontaneously combusted but I'm keeping an eye on it.

I shut mine off, just a force of habit with any system. If any light is still glowing...turn the damn thing off...

I almost always turn mine off and unplug it. It's just a habit for me also.

I throw mine out the window to make sure it's completely off.

Oh, wait, that's what I do... in my mind... when I get DREs. My bad, I put the system in standby and to make sure it's completely shut down and then I shut it off completely.

I leave it on standby, but at the end of the day, I turn it off completely.

I also turn off all power points too.

i dont really use it all that often, but it remains hooked up, but the switch on the back stays turned off.

I turn mine off and unplug it. It even says in the manual to unplug it when your not using it.

Something they should have told everyone about the PS.

Mine is plugged into a power center/surge protector thingie. I shut it off when not in use, thereby closing off all current. And trust me, that thing is still drawing power when in hibernation.

I always turn it off unless I forget somehow, I guessing its safer since the unit doesnt have the power as in standby mode but im taking it like a vcr showing numbers etc / not a big deal but if you want to be safer just hit the switch off.

My first PS2 was always on standby and it was still problem free after nearly two years of ownership, then it was stolen so now I hope it goes tits up on the thief who stole it from me.

I've replaced it and the new one is also on standby.

Part of the reason I leave it on standby is because my wife uses it as a DVD player quite often so I figure it's just easier for her to use if she doesn't have to reach around back and flip the switch everytime she wants to watch a movie.

I turned mine off once, when I moved. Other than that, it's never been out of use/out of standby.

I used to unplug mine and shut it off, but not anymore, it's like the standby mode on a pc..it wont do any harm as long as its not in a really hot damp room in the summertime

I always, keep it switched off, and if it's not been in use i also leave it unplugged, leaving it on Standby is just as good as leaving it powered on.. the same with an electrical unit.

So if you don't use it leave it unplugged, i started a few years back (TV, satelite system, VCR, DVD player, TV cinema system, consoles, sound system), and it makes a difference my electricity bill as well!... over the last few years i'v saved like £200 or £300 which isn't far off $540.... awwwweeeee! O_O

I leave it on standby, as with all of my stuff that has the function. To me it never seemed any good to constanly send a jolt of electricity through something. Just like if you are constanly turning a newer computer on and off you will screw it up eventually. My Mac stays on for months at a time, I just reset it every now and then when I reconfigure something. The only thing I turn off when it's not in use is my surround reciever cause it's an electricity hog.
