I hope that some of the Playstation experts can help me out on a problem. I bought what I though was a regular Playstation today, and got to looking at it, and it says that it was modded on 11/30/97.
I looked it over and on the back it has parallel I/O connection, audio out L/R video out (the 3 plugs that are red, yellow and white), RFU DC Out, serial I/O, AV multi out, and AC in. The inside of the unit has asticker that reads "PSX Direct, and some Japan writing along with some English. The lens is also turned in the opposit direction.
My problem is that it will play the game Fade to Black, but when I put in Dino Crisis it come up with a red circle with a slash through it and some japaness writting. Would this be a Japan system that will play a few American games?

You're theory is actually backwards. :D
The PlayStation itself, regardless of region has been modified to play both Import and US games. However, several *games* had extra encryption added to them to try and beat mod people. All you need is a GameShark for the parallel port and use a GameShark B-pass code to play the game. I had to buy one for Final Fantasy VIII import to skip the ol ' red circle slash of death.
You can find the bi-pass codes for games at www.cmgsccc.com.

Thanks for the fast response Jason. That is interesting, and too much trouble for me to do just to play games. I auctually got 2 PS's, so I'll be useing the other one and put the modded one on auction. Thanks again for the info,
Tony

The system says it was "Modded" in 1997???? Thats something that I've never seen. Them saying when it was modded just sounds kinda funny. I do know that Dino Crisis had some extra stuff done to the release that made it harder for mod chips to play the game, thus locking out the game itself.
Do you have any way to get some pics up, and any other games (preferably newer) to see if your system will play those?

I'll get a scan of the lable on the bottom, and the 2 games mentioned are the only ones that I have.

I also have chipped PSX that has an issue with Omega Boost JPN.
This one is later model without I/O port at the back.
Any other way to run these anti-mod titles for PSX missing I/O port?
guess I will have to install that I/O port kit that I picked up in Japan...
cheers

Careful how you list it on eBay. If you put in the auction that it is modded or anything making reference to that fact, they will pull it if they see it. I got an auction pulled because I said that the PSX was one of the old models that had the parallel I/O port, which could be used with external mod devices.

Papastu: I think the mod person place the sticker on there (note the peeling, it's not a assembly line adhesive).
As for playing without the O/I port....I never really tried it with a CD version. Don't know for sure.

Same thing happened to me. I tried playing the RE3 Demo and got that red circle screen. So I went out and got another PS, and didnt know about the bypass code with the GS. Another thing, I had my PS modded in Nov of 97. Must've been a good month for Moddin. :eek 2:

If I remember right, there were less than a dozen games that wouldn't work on modded consoles.

I know Medevil (sp) and Spyro both had issues.
Edit: Here's a link to the info and the lists for each region.

Those JPN Mega Man games give me the red circle/slash of nothingness, also...
You don't neccessarily need a Gameshark, "newer" Modchips (usually labeled as "Stealth" Modchips back when they were new) play all these games without any codes. You could also patch the Games, saves the time it takes to navigate the damn old Gameshark-Menu, and no temptation to use cheats :)
