Two years ago, I sold my copy of Earthbound on eBay for about $60. It was totally complete and in fantastic shape. Back then, I don't remember auctions going for very much more than that. I always knew Earthbound was considered almost like a status symbol, but damn....
Seems like very few games actually appreciate in value like that.
I still refuse to pay more for a game now than when it was new. Any game, ever.
Does that make me cheap?

Wow.
I bought my "Fami-Complete" book set from a guy who later sold his mint and complete copy of "Earthbound." He was even including the un-opened "Pizza Delivery Guy" air freshener that he got from the mail-in promotion.
He had a BIN price of $200 on the auction.
I guess I should've gone for it.
Dammit.

I bought 5 new copies of this game from Walmart 3 years ago for $35 each. They were sitting at $79 forever. Man the cashier gave me a weird look and asked if I had a game store or something. I said no (which is true) but she implied that she wouldn't be able to sell them to me if I did. I love the wierd looks you get buying duplicate titles at department store. The ladies at Zellers looked at me like I was an idiot when I picked up 18 sealed copies of Bubble Bobble for the PS. At least I hope that was the reason.
Anyway back on topic. I sold the Earthbounds in eBay for $60 to $75 each except for one. That went to an Australlian buyer who paid $96. This time I was the one thinking a buyer was nuts. It might have been a deal considering a complete copy demands a premium. $215 is nuts though. Over $300 and you've crossed the line between sane and insane in a Porshe diong 145 MPH, screaming like a baboon having an orgasm. That's just my opinion though. ;)
Note: The Bubble Bobble games sold for $25 to $35 each. Next time I pick up a big lot of new and "rare" games, I'm going to hold on to them for a few years.

Yes, you are cheap. :P
It's been my observations that some classic SNES games -- like Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, and others -- have increased in value, especily when sold NIB like this.
As for the game itself? It's quite good, a different kind of RPG, with a lot of humor and unusuall things.

Jesus...is the game that damn good?
NO.. not IMHO. The game held my interest for about a day.. way back when.. as a rental.
The graphics suck compared to most other popular SNES RPGs. The gameplay is run of the mill and lacks ANY innovation. The humor wasn't all THAT funny (unless you appreciate "toilet humor") and the story was pretty much pointless.
I like to think of Earthbound as the "Toejam & Earl" of SNES RPGs. Highly overrated; and non-spectacular. Ground breaking? Gimme' a break.
I have never understood why.. after about 4 years from it's release.. this game suddenly became so highly sought after. Other SNES RPGS like Mana, Chronotrigger, and such.. deserve much more praise than this "semi-average" title. Maybe it just happened after most collectors had acquired most of the "greats" and were now searching for something.. anything else to collect; and stumbled upon this lackluster release.

I think the scratch and sniff stickers were more entertaining then the game itself.

I bought Earthbound way back when, brand new. It was the first RPG I'd ever played and I probably have more fond memories of it than any other game. Honestly, I'd drop $300 on it in a heartbeat if I had to. I think it's the second greatest game of all time, second only to Chrono Trigger.

I am forever kicking myself in the ass because I sold my copy of Earthbound about 6 years ago. I loved the game, but I refuse to take out a small loan to buy it again. :frustrated:

I think you're seeing a few things at work:
1) collectible titles like Earthbound increasing in value due to having a "collectible" value apart from the play value
2) increasing price spreads for mint completes and/or sealed vs. loose carts
3) collectors getting a little bit older, having a little more money for stuff like this
--I just think it's too bad it never came sealed. As nice as that copy is, you can't really tell if it's never been opened or not. That thick cardboard wouldn't stress from being opened only a few times. If it was originally shrinkwrapped I'd have bid a lot more than this, but as it stands you can't really tell if it's new or not.
As for the game itself, you either love it or hate it I guess, but I certainly love it. It's a DIFFERENT rpg, not the same square/enix/natsume stuff we've seen a hundred times. And to me, that makes it refreshing and fun..

i remember when i lost my chance to get a starfox super weekend for about $40. it was spelled starfox weeked or something, but I know it was misspelled. it made me a little angry when i saw that the others go for alot more than 40

Umm... NO. The graphics did not "suck" they were stylized as children's scrawl for a reason. That reason being the entire game was designed from the perspective and reasoning of a child. So I'd say Earthbound had the most clever use of a graphics I've ever seen on the SNES. You don't have to like the game, but at least give it credit where credit is due.

People need to play deeper into Earthbound to fully appreciate it. You should also note that this is one of very few RPGs in a modern setting, compared to midevel setting with"magic".
Actually I dont know of any others off the top of my head.

Jesus...is the game that damn good?
It definitely is. The game is incredible..don't let the graphics fool you. The game isn't just toilet humor either...some of it is very witty. FOr example, there is an underground section with dinosaurs in it ala Journey to the Center of the Earth. The people that live down there put a fence around their town and were proud that they put a fence around the dinosaurs to keep them out of town (they didn't realize they gated themselves in, yet they were happy about it). The game is very whacked and illogically funny like that.
Oh, it also helps if you've done any hallucingens before, um, I hear. Or something. Then there will be a lot of things you wouldn't have "got" otherwise.

Boy, is it painful for me to see this. I remember seeing stacks of these, brand new, in my local Best Buy for 9.99 each. They were piled up in the space underneath a shelf...there must have been more than a hundred of them. I didn't have a SNES at the time so I bought notta one. Ouch!

Earthbound is one of the biggest cult games ever. Just go to starmen.net (http://www.starmen.net) to see how nuts it gets. They usually put direct links to all ebay earthbound auctions, so no wonder they get so high.

Yeah, Starman....that'll do it.
Sucks too. I regret selling it soo much. Not even becuase of the money....I just love that damn game. One good thing though. I did record myself playing the whole game awhile back. I did that with FFIII(VI) as well. So at least I can go back and see the whole game being played.
I just can't control it.:(

Dand. Could have made over 10,000 bucks. I remember tons of stuff that is worth money now. Like nes top loaders for 20 bucks at TRU after they sat there for like a year.

I bought one at Walmart on clearance for $5.00 They had quite a few.
I was broke at the time and ended up trading it in elsewhere for $10 or $15 (possibly in trade value) at a local game/music store.
I never played it but I did want to keep it. However, $5 or $10 was a lot of money to me at that time.
