i painted mine a long, long time ago. all i really did was take the top half off, tape off the black part, sand the grey section, and spray paint it pink. actually looks pretty rad, although i don't know if you care that you'd be painting over the nintendo logo or not. i left the bottom half regular.

I've painted a few NESes. I use krylon fusion (http://www.krylon.com/main/product_template.cfm?levelid=5&sub_levelid=10&productid=1751&content=product_details). It looks great, and it's easy to paint with. I didn't need to do anything to prepare the surface. I just painted it.
