after reading far too many console flame wars in various boards i thought it would be interesting to see peoples opinions about what things/games are missing on the consoles you own? especially on the ones YOU LIKE

(only 128-bit consoles pls, gc/xbox/ps2/dc

i'll start ;)

Cube:

RACING games, especially good rally games, i know there are some more in the US than in Europe (auto modellista, nascar...) but i really really mis good racing games :(

still too few rpgs, although the situation is getting better and better

no baseball game in europe :(

PS2:

oldschool jump&runs, i'm not the biggest fan of games like jak&dexter and so on, i like them, but i prefer classic jump&runs, like Donald Duck Quack Attack (yeah!)

DC:

too few rpg's imho :(
far too many games didn't make it to germany, like (again) the baseball games, a lot of the 2d-shmups and 2d-beatemups

A "strip" mahjong game for any of them. Yes I'm serious. ;)

I completely agree! :D

All consoles, including PCs:
Space-sims. They would be gorgeous with current technology... :(

speaking of space, they need a quality wing commander on a console. they used to do it all the time. i know for a fact they did it with snes and sega cd. i know that they ported wc: prophecy i think to the gba, but seriously, that might be a little hard to play on gba.

i want an xbox wing commander ot something extremely similar to those lines

2-D Platformers, good ones.

Cube:

-option for a different style controller. Whoever thought that the bean buttons, a big honkin' "A" button and a little candy red "B" button was a good idea needs their skull examined. I can get used to that but the C stick just feels awkward-it's too tight for precision in games like Medal of Honor.

In General:

-more space sims. Like SegaTecToy I enjoy good space flight/sim games. Starlancer was decent but nothing's really surfaced, even on PCs. The Rogue Squadron games don't really fit the bill due to the fact that in space you don't have the full freedom of movement (if you fly straight down the game wants to level you off). I want to fight the bad guys, not the game's engine.

-more exploration-type games. One of my fave 16 bit games was Starflight for the Genesis. It's as close as a "proper" Star Trek game could be: fly to planets, scan them, land on them, meet aliens and speak/barter/fight with them, find new worlds to colonize, etc. There really hasn't been a game like that in some time and it boggles my mind why no one attempts something like this. I think it would be fun as long as there is an ample amount of combat (both land and space).

Cube: A Zelda game with replay value :/

I dunno why, just felt like saying that. Maybe I'll feel differently later, but I will say that I'll be going back to the N64 Zeldas in the future, but not the GC one.

PS2: Funky affine-textured Tenchu. I found a site with a variety of voice acting rips from the game, though, and what sounded funny years ago sounds just plain bizzarre now.

XBox NeXt: Needs more Hard Drive and Steve Jobs (by the same token, the Playdia needed a hand from Steve, who probably would've killed it dead at the start; conversely, the iMac needs more Steve Wozniak).

OK.. I miss the ability to save directly to; and with the game (i.e. carts).

Ahhh.. carts.

those are all not really realistic, i want a good rally game, a good f1 game, a good toca/dtm game and a good GT-style racer :) all that's missing

Older, traditional japanese RPG's, even for the PS2.
I want my weapon and armor upgrades, and long boring level-up trudging! Ala dragonwarrior series.

Hell, that IS what's missing, did you know they just updated DW5 and re-leased in japan now too? Bad enough DW4's update never made it out over here damnit.

Hell, it's bad enough DW5,6,8 haven't made it over here at ALL, japan has TWO DW5's to play now. AAHHHHHHH. Damn you japan! Damn you Enix! Let square translate for chirssakes.

It's already been said, but I'll add another vote for carts. I understand that carts really aren't feasible anymore in terms of storage, manufacturing costs etc. But there's just something I find cool about snapping in a cart; in effect adding another piece of hardware which changes the fundamental nature of the machine. I know that isn't really how it works, but this is more of an aesthetic sense than a functional one.

In fact that's the only reason I bought an N64, as it will probably go down in history as the last.cartridge console.ever.

Got another to add: good multiplayer, twitch Track and Field type games. We haven't really seen a game in recent time that were addictive or joyously painful as Epyx's Summer or Winter Games, Konami's Track and Field games or World Games. I remember spending hours trying to get my controller holding/button mashing technique down so I can get an edge against my opponents.

i'm pretty content with my DC. Lots of 2d shmups, and fighters. Not enough RPG's though. I loved Grandia 2

PS2 I found dissapointing. Other than RPG's it was kinda plain.

GC's weird controler is strangely satisfying, but playing fighters on it is worse the DC!!!

XBox - I dont like sports, and it's really weak RPG wise thus far. We'll see when fable comes out. It has too many PC like games for my taste.

Perfect arcade ports.

You dreamed (hoped) of having your favorite arcade game translated 100% perfectly on your home system but never got it. Today we have systems that can do that and more, yet nobody wants to make them.

Sega, make some money back by porting some beloved classic arcade games on the Xbox or something.

I also miss a good Beat 'em Up. "Beats of Rage" was good, but it left me wanting more.

Yes, I agree whole-heartedly. Where is M.r Do! for the Gamecube? Why not a Crystal Castles for the XBOX? No Solomon's Key for the PS2? These could be INCREDIBLE.

I kinda miss playing purely for points. I'm sure there's still games like that out there, but I apparently don't own any. :(

Fun story: At the Midwest Classic, I walked past a kid playing a Donkey Kong game with his dad watching and overheard the following.

Dad: What does the umbrella do?
Kid: I don't know.
Dad: Maybe it lets you float back down to the ground or something?

Ah, the days when bonus objects DIDN'T give you special powers. LOL

Wow that's more depressing to even know the fact that the Father doesn't even know what the umbrella does...

I miss brawlers, I miss Bonk and Adventure Island (I don't know why Hudson will port these to US Cube)

I miss the horde of Arcade titles like Black Tiger, Mercs...before the arcades became nothing more then Fighters which isn't bad...but I miss the hack and slash/run and gun

I'm still waiting for this generation's great shooter. Ikaruga, Mars Matrix, and R-Type Final were adequate, but I'd like to see something on the level of Radiant Silvergun or Einhander. My feeling is the designers are approaching these games as throwaways; a concession to the dwindling hardcore contingent. Hopefully Treasure's take on Gradius will buck the trend, but I doubt it.

I miss six button controllers. Even buying PC controllers with anything other than the crappy SNES\PSX layout is a pain.

Know what'd be tight?

Since Ikaruga was basically a old-schoolish shooter with 3-D rendered graphics, why not have a old schoolish side scrolling action platformer that fits the league with Ikaruga?

2-D Platformers, good ones.

I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment, and would add 2D top-down games as well. Just 2D games overall...I want my 2D!

I miss the old atari days when one could freeze the game just by getting a high enough score.

I'm not sure that would be a good thing on any curent systems though so....

X-box needs more RPGs. Its nice that they are getting so many great action RPGs such as Morrowind, KOTOR, and such but some turn based ones would be nice as well. Better gameplay in their titles would also be a plus. It almost feels at time that there is an overly heavy emphesis on looking good and not caring how well they play. I think Murakumo was a pefect example of this. Some good side scrooling shooters wouldnt hurt either.

PS2 needs RPGs that are fun to play. While I enjoyed most of what I played at the begining, I found most to be lacking in areas. FF10 was a vast improvment over the previous 3 on the PS1 in story, graphics, and engine but was a bit short with to many items I felt were useless to completing the main story line. Disgaea was fun as well but the story was very short and all the great charcter clases were so difficult to unlock that by the time you were able to unlock them, you would normaly have beat the game atleast once. Plus, isnt getting up to level 4000 a bit redundant? Though it was very funny at times. Horse weiner. Heh. .Hack was a series that by the time I got to the 4th in it, I simply didnt care any more and just hacked my way to the end. Which was just as good at giving answers about the series as the anime was. By hack I mean cheat device. Odd though. Hack .Hack?

GBA need a greatest hits selection. If there is one, I dont know of it. It could also use another golden sun game. Or two more for that matter.

I guarantee I'm alone here, but how about less involved RPG's. The thing that turns me off modern RPG's is that you have to LIVE them to get anything out of them or to progress very far. I'm all about an immersive world, but there is a limit to how immersed I want to become. I think FFVIII ruined me on this with its card game and training missions, etc.

Paper Mario is a perfect example. Sure its kind of "my first RPG-ish" but it was fun, challenging and overall a great time. I got to play an RPG type game, but if I needed to go to work I could just save and go about my day, I didn't have to take 5 pages of notes, just to remember what I was in the middle of doing or why.

Early RPG's were a lot like this as well. I think FFVII was really the last exceptional RPG I played (FFIX was pretty good too, though).
