View Full Version : Happy 13th anniversary to Digital Press!

For those of you who indulge in the printed-and-duplicated glory that is the Digital Press newsletter (and if not, why not?), today marks the 13th anniversary of Digital Press: The Organization.

Take a moment to give Joe, Dave and the whole peanuts gang a hearty slap on the back and buy 'em a beer (and very possibly more than one beer!), for it is from the fertile seeds of the print incarnation of DP that our entire forum community and web presence spring.

Yay! In three more years, the DP newsletter will be asking for the keys to the car. :eek 2: ;) :D

May there be another 13 years of the organization responsible for the BEST fuckin' work of literature known to mankind! (referring to the print guide)

Wow, 1991...

SNES came out that year. Genesis was a current machine. The NES was still an important market. No PlayStation yet. Atari 2600 games were still being released (well, in the UK anyway). Mortal Monday was still two years in the future. Nobody'd heard of Xbox, N64, Halo, or Doom for that matter.

That's a lot of history to have lived through. Thanks DP for all your efforts to preserve and celebrate it!

13 years of a videogame 'zine is indeed very impressive! Congrats to the founders, and for all who contribute for a long time to make the newsletter happen. The endurance is remarkable.

I think it is important to remember what makes those things happen. It is idealism, sacrifice of time and work that flows from something very plain and simple: fascination, love and and a deep interest for videogames; and everything we do, from discussing games, reading and writing about their history, archiving them, reminiscing and analysing genres or series, making complete lists of releases and label variations and hardware, all of these are different forms of a deep interest and love for games.

We all have this love, but there are some who take it a step further than just playing and enjoying games. The founders and long-time contributors belong in this category. They have to be applauded.

Thanks for the thoughts, folks, it means a lot!

Though it seems like "Digital Press" has been part of my life forever, I can honestly say that it is still a project in its infancy. One that has many roads to travel and adventures to complete! It is a standing homage to the best friend I ever had and the hobby that he cherished.

I've said it all before though - Digital Press is no longer only about the people who get the paper issues in the mail, who research and edit the books, or who scribe their knowledge onto the online pages before you. Digital Press is ALL OF US. This community grows larger and smarter and tighter each day and the original charter of Digital Press - to preserve the classics - will surely burn for all time thanks to each of you.

Thanks again, and see you... everywhere!

Many congratulations on another fine anniversary. Digital Press was probably my favorite of all those early fanzines I started reveiving in the mail when I started my own gaming zine. It was professional and top-class in every way; everything looked great, the writers knew their turf, and there was a great spirit of fun throughout.

I'm quite surprised that DP continues to thrive. If anything, DP and the folks behind it are bigger than ever, spearheading this new sub-culture of classic videogames. For those of you who weren't around 13 years ago, remember that none of this -- global message boards, mammoth collector guides, Classic Gaming Expo -- existed yet. Hell, this was before the World Wide Web was created.

Most of us have come and gone, many of us became paid writers for games and other things, and we've even lost a good friend in Kevin Oleniacz. I'm acutely aware of that last event, because I've lost my oldest friend three years ago. This whole life is too damned short and over far too quickly.

Today, I can't imagine a world without Digital Press. I know that I can drop by now and then, and know that there's still a link to my past. So happy birthday, happy bar-mitzvah, yada yada.

I have to go now and find something to write about the game Panic.
