So my girlfriend's brother bought a PS2 at launch. It of course acted up over time and all the other crap normally associated with PS2s. Today he decided that he didn't really need it and didn't care to try fixing it, so he gave it to me.
Needless to say I took it and gave it a good cleaning and tweaking, it will now do everything it's supposed to except normal audio CDS, which I could care less about. Blackback PSX, Blueback PS2, and the...other PS2 discs. Honestly I'll probably use it more for PSX. So I've got some stuff to discuss. Edit: removed stuff about backups, I've found my own info.
My other question is are there really any games that are worth having on PS2? And when I say that, I mean EXCLUSIVE games, or at least ones that have a major advantage over the other platforms. I've asked this question before elsewhere and everytime I always get a good list of Dreamcast and PC games. So please to be informing me on the point of having a Playstation 2.

Funny, every time I ask people if there are any good XBox games I get a list of PC and PS2 games...
Disgaea - Mmm, FFT-style strategy
Amplitude - If you like music games and can endure rap
Dark Cloud 2 - I'll invent a robot bird'snest mailbox!
Romance of the Three Kingdoms series - Addictive in-depth strategy. Come on, you've always wanted to conquer ancient China. (I think they're exclusive. Not sure)
Ico
Kingdom Hearts - Crackheaded idea, surprisingly fun game
Suikoden III - Nowhere near the level of the first 2, but a decent 'common'-style RPG
Silent Hill 2 and 3 - If a door repairman moved to this town, he could make millions
Zone of the Enders - Hideo Kojima. Giant Robots.
Devil May Cry
Gungrave
Gitaroo Man
Parappa the Rapper 2
Ring of Red
Wild ARMs 3
and soon
Metal Gear Solid 3

Contra: Shattered Soliders
King of Fighters 2000/2001
Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution
Tekken Tag Tournament
Onimusha 2 and 3
CastleVania: Lament of Innocence
Guilty Gear X
Guilty Gear XX
Street Fighter EX3 (I heard this was good..I gotta give it a whirl someday)
Vampire Night
Time Crisis series
Maximo: Ghosts to Glory (Didn't see that coming from me, did ya?!)
Maximo Vs. The Army of Zin (Ohhh didnt see that one either now!)
Suikoden IV coming this year so we hope
Btw Silent Hill 1 and 3 are the only exlusive to the PS2/PS1 (4 doesnt count since it's on Xbox as well)

Gran Freakin Turismo 3 (and concept/prologue if you were in a non SCEA region).
V-Rally 3 is pretty good, especially if your after a change from CMR
The Tekkens- your taste may vary though.
Virtua Fighter 4 and VF: Evo are pretty good
Timesplitters is great too, even if its a little long in the tooth now.
Timesplitters 2 is probably good, but i havent played it yet sooo..
Transformers- More than meets the eye.
And why to people talk about PS2 as if its a game.com fer cryin out loud x_x

Yeah so far I've played and enjoyed moderately amplitude and mad maestro, but they just kinda feel like they're trying to be Rez and Samba to me for some reason.
None of the PS2 action titles, ie DMC, ect, interest me at all really. Neither does Metal Gear Solid in any form. Some of the RPGs look interesting (ie Dark Cloud 2 and maybe Wild Arms 3). For some reason like 99% of all ps2 games just seem...pointless to me. I truly cannot understand the draw yet, I keep trying stuff and I'm just not finding a killer app or any real soul in many of the games. Keep trying more I guess.
Yeah i should try Maximo though.
Edit: Yeah, Timesplitters 2 is good...on xbox, heh.
edit2: I can give a list of good xbox games...that doesn't start / contain Halo.

That's actaully pretty tempting. But I tend to never sell something unless I have multiples..took me three dreamcasts and extreme poverty to sell one fo them, heh.

Like shmups? Get R-Type Final.
Sly Cooper and the Jak & Daxter series are pretty fun too, if you like platformers. Can't think of anything else that hasn't been mentioned.

Flying:
Sky Gunner. Cute, very involved gameplay, Poor framerates but easily overlooked.
Sky Odyssey. No guns, just adventurous flying.
Auto Combat
Twisted Metal Black. Paint it black!
Racing
NFS:HP2. Arguably best on PS2 but available on every platform.
Ridge Racer V. Like R4 with wacked out slide physics
Fighting:
War of the Monsters! OMG YOU DON"T OWN THIS?!
3D Action Adventure.
Ratchet and Clank series.
Jak and Daxter Series.
You should be able to pick up most of those really cheap as new or used.

If you're in to RPG's, theres not much to talk about, PS2 is the ONLY console with any RPG's on it. (tales of symphonia and skies of arcadia excluded)

Man you know what. Call into sony and just tell them your problem and say it has been a problem ever since you can remember. They will get you to send it into them , you have to pay the shipping there , they will repair it or send you a new one for free. If its one of the first batch of PS2's that came out they will give you a new one. I just sent my PS2 in like 2 months ago and i have had it since the very first day of release so its ancient. One week later a brand new spankin ps2 came in the mail for me with a new warrenty and everything. The problem with my ps2 was that the memory cards kept gettin corrputed and the DVD's would freeze after about a hour of watching them.

I fixed it myself with about 10 minutes of work, including "where does this part go..." stuff. He was aware of the sony deal but shipping isn't cheap and he didn't care much as he has access to another. Good advice, but none I personally needed.

I really got a new PS2 , about 3 years ago my wife won it and a Sony DVD player on the Rosie O'Donnell show. They pulled her from the audiance to particpate in a game and she won the prizes. I am not a fan of Rosie's but , hey I got a free PS2 and DVD player. So I was happy!
