I've been thinking about thinning out my collection a bit. I'm planning to do so to clear out some of the games I didn't like or don't want to make room for additional games. This got me curious as to what my fellow DP'ers do when they run out of room. Let the poll commence!

I used to be of the mind that you should buy more shelves, but now I believe that if you don't really want the stuff...why keep it?

Unless you are going for a complete collection for a given system...there is no reason to keep stuff you don't want!

So I say trade it for better stuff, or sell the unwanted things to make enouigh money to buy the things you really want.

This hobby is all about having fun, and enjoying your stuff...if you have things you don't like, that lessens the amount of fun you are having in the hobby I believe.

Option #3: Give your stuff to Aussie2B.

Hehe, old, overused joke, I know. :P

Just get rid of crap you don't need. If you don't consider it crap, and really want it, then build more storage.

When I lived in a smaller house I used to frequently trade stuff or sell it. Now that I moved I keep almost everything.

I'm doing a bit of both this winter. I'm finishes off an unfinished room in my new house and moving my gaming room there for a LOT more room, but I'm also getting rid of a lot of my duplicate systems (atari clones/variations)

Personally, I only keep games I like or rare stuff I like to show off. Not that I have anything rare though! LOL I just don't have the room or incentive to keep games I don't enjoy.

Sell it.

What is the point of having a shitload of games you'll never play, unless they're rare or have a good story behind them?

Keep the fun games, ditch the dumb ones.

More storage.

I highly suggest investing in IKEA shelving units- IVAR modular in particular- you can go wall to wall to ceiling with those- they have some that are 72" tall, and you can put 12 shelves (as many as you want really) on each one, for maximal density. They are more flexible and aren't much more expensive than building your own shelves.

When I finally settle in again and establish my game room (gravity... pulling me... in...) I will probably go with custom built ins, particularly drawers that are built to game spec for maximal density. Shelves only work for game storage when you go double deep or triple deep, unless you have alot of wall space. Shelves are great for hardware.

Guess it depends on the situation.

I just got a few boxes and filled them with everything I dont want, to trade away for stuff I do want *points to trade list*

But I am running out of space, so more storgae is needed.

For temporary solutions, maybe you can condense some stuff? If you have alot of complete NES games, just leave the carts on a shelf and stash away the boxes?

I used to be in the "Buy More Shelving/Storage Units" category, but since I have no more room for shelves in my room, I'm in the "Liquidate Unwanted/Unnecessary Games" category. I've been selling a lot of stuff I don't want, or have doubles of recently. Making some extra cash for when I go out to buy things I want, or don't have. :-)

I'd build more storage, but I haven't researched woodworking 4 yet :(
