It's called the "Type X." Raiden 3 is supposed to be running on it although it was only shown in video form.
I really wish they would get someone that knows what the fuck they are talking about over at IGN.
Sega, for the first time in ages, may no longer be on top in arcade technology. At today's Jamma arcade convention in Tokyo, Taito gave arcade industry insiders a look at its Type X arcade board, a board whose specs seem to go beyond Sega's Chihiro and Triforce arcade boards
No fucking shit. Thanks Captain Obvious! They don't have the top technology anymore. Look at the specs of Type X and look at the specs for Xbox and Gamecube. Chihiro and Triforce are from Microsoft and Nintendo, not Sega.
But the board is missing some big names, most notably Sega and Namco. These two arcade powers have their own boards. Namco makes use of PS2 and Nintendo-based hardware. Sega has at least six boards, including Chihiro, Triforce, Naomi, Naomi 2, System 246 and Atomiswave, with the company also expected to unveil a Naomi 3 board in the future. Chance of support from these two companies, typically the movers and shakers of the arcade scene, is slim and could keep Type X from showing its true potential as a low cost, expandable and powerful board.
I like that Anoop (the writer) doesn't put it together that the PS2 and Nintendo based hardware that Namco uses is the same as the Triforce and System 246 hardware that Sega uses. Also, while Sega has 6 different boards to choose from I don't think they use them all that much anymore. At least when you compare the use of those 6 platforms to the Naomi in its heyday. Yeah I know Naomi is one of the 6 systems.
I live for details. I hate it when journalists from big videogame websites like IGN seem to care less about them. Fucking IGN, YOU BLOW INFECTED GOAT COCK!
