Technical question about TV's...

I have an HDTV in my living room, and in the next room, I have another TV that is sitting back to back to the HDTV. So the 2 TV's are directly across from each other, divided only by a wall. The problem is if one TV is on, and you turn the other on, the first TV gets discolored briefly, similar in appearance to what happens when you press the degauss button on a PC monitor.
What I want to know is if I'm causing any permanent damage to either TV by having them sit so close together.
I've tried searching for info on the topic without much help.
Any ideas?

Could be just a power draw fluctuation. When I turn my 28" TV on, my nearby computer monitor has a little hiccup.

I have two nearly identical TVs next to each other that do this. It must be cause by the em field generated by the TV.

I've got a TV that was acting up last time I tried it out, does anyone care to help me determine it's problems?

It's an older model, but it has obscene amounts of imputs in the back and audio out options, so on. However, last time I plugged it in, allit would do is emit a high-pitched noise and start giving off an ozone smell...anyone seen this before? Think it's fixiable possibly? I really do like this TV, heh.

Sounds like a flyback to me. Too much for the average DITYer. I would take it to a shop if you are desperate to get it fixed but prepare for a $150-200 bill. Or alternatively since of course my diagnosis is off the cuff and could be wrong you can take it to a TV shop and just pay the bench fee (usually $30) to find out the exact problem and get an estimate. Most shops will do that so you can decide whether it is worth fixing.

My TV attracts a large strange dust circle (perfect circle) onto the screen on the center left area. It looks as if someone got a compass and drew a perfect circle on the screen. There will be NO DUST on the outside (or was it inside..) of the circle and the reverse for the other...

It is quite weird and I don't understand it.

Mr Mort, power sags can be bad for electronics also, but I don't know if its bad for TVs. One thing you can try is borrow a UPS from someone and put it on your older TV, turn it on and see if it still sags the HDTV. The UPS should provide enough energy so the older TV doesn't sap energy from the HDTV. It might we wortht he $40 investment in a UPS if someone can confirm if this hurts TVs or not.

But then again it could be electrostatic interference.

Completely forgot to reply to your original question. My take on it is if it only discolors briefly then clears up then it will be fine. If it stayed discolored I would say you need to move them. Hope that helps.

at my granshouse whenever we turn the tv on the radio picks up static? what the hell O_O

Sounds like the flyback got disco'd from the tube somehow, or that the flyback is cracked (and arching). Either of which would be a simple fix. But Alan is right - if you take it to a TV repair shop, it'll most likely be expensive (they won't RV silicon the crack up, they'll replace it).

A simple fix you say? Can you provide me with any further reading on the subject bychance?

Sound like magnetic interferance to me. I have two monitors on my desk and when one in on and I turn the other one the first is distored for a few seconds as the second starts up. You can get the same effect by putting something like an electric fan next to a monitor. The electro magnets in the motor will distort the picture.

Placing a one inch thick sheet of iron between the two TV's should solve the problem. LOL
