Reading through the thread about stuff you've passed up has made me wonder - what stuff have you bought, only to find out that it was crap / worthless / hideously overpriced? In other words, what purchases do you regret the most?
Personally, I can't think of all that many really bad purchasing decisions that I've made, but there are a few that stand out -
An ebay lot of 3 Sega Genesis systems for $40
A few common NES games for $5 each
$1 for Mario / Duckhunt [any amount is too much]
An atari w/o controllers for $20 - didn't realize working controllers are worth more then a system these days.
What about you guys?
Buying out a stores atari intelivision and coleco vision collectione for 300 bucks.
Was more trouble then its worth plus I have far too many commons. :bawling:

No one thing stands out in my mind but I'm always picking up some VG-related item thinking I can trade it or sell it, then it ends up in a junk box in the basement where I try to get rid of it once a year in a yard sale of my own.
Then someone else buys it, thinking the same thing I did and the vicious cycle goes on and on. . . 8-)

WAY too much stuff. It's part of what I do for a living, I take risks, and lose sometimes <shrug>

I hardly ever buy something game related and later regret it. The only thing that comes to mind is buying Drakken for the snes when it first came out for $60. I was so pissed off after playing the game and finding out it just wasn't my type of game. Not that it's exactly bad, just not nearly what I expected.

FFX...worst $50 I ever spent. After enjoying FF IX so much, it was even more heart-breaking :(

Well, I'm not sure if this topic is only about games ...or is it about hardware too. But the most worthless money that i ever spend on games was indeed put into harware. I'm talking about a Saitek X45 flying HOTAS joysick. I just got this idea that I'm going to start playing flight simulators...i went to the store and payed 100 bucks for the joystick...just to find out that flight simulators are just not the type of games i like. Arghhh...its still packed in a box in my closet, practically brand new....with no place to go, cuz I don't know anyone who would want it.
If u guys have no clue about saiter x45 - thats what it looks like

buying steel battalion for $199.99.it is cool looking and everything, and the controller and foot pedals are awesome.but,i just leave it in the box, because i dont have the room for the controller to leave setting out.when i first bought it,i played it for 5 hours streight(it took at least a couple hours just getting use to the controller)but i have not played it since.its a cool collectable for my game stuff, but to me the game it self is just ok,the controller is the gimmick, and now i think about it,i could of used that money for other stuff.

Hmmm, I guess I'd say the games I bought brand new that I could've waited on. While I have no regrets buying Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG for $80, I do wish I hadn't spent $60-$70 buying games like Killer Instinct Gold and Tetris 2...

Uh, shit, where do I start? I've bought a number of things for WAY too much. I've learned my lesson, and leave it at that!

I regret spending $54 on ps2, xbox, and gamecube games that I buy brand new and play only once or twice. I have luckily broken myself out of that habit and rent more games now before I buy them, or only buy games I am guaranteed to like.

I very rarely buy something that I regret (in video games). The only thing that comes to mind actually is Steel Battalion. For $199.99 I could have got much more gamecube games. The game is so slow, and controlling it is freaking too hard.
I don't fully regret buying it though. It makes a great conversation piece to a casual or non gamer. Everybody is like wow! Can I try that that controller out?

Buying both a Ps2 and a Gamecube, just too many systems to support.

I agree with boatofcar about FFX. I don't like it, and I should have waited and grabbed it for $20 just to have it. There are a few other PS2 games that I should have waited on or not bought, but oh well. The first thing that came to my mind when I started reading this thread is my NES UForce. I bought it boxed for about $2 at the salvation army last year. It isnt the $2 that bothers me, but rather the room it takes up in my closet. My problem is that whenever I see any gaming-related items in a thrift store, I have this feeling that I have to buy it just to make sure it gets a good home instead of ending up in a dumpster. That being the case, I would probably still buy the uforce if I had it to do all over again. I'll probably take it to CGE next year and try to get rid of it at the swap meet.

Well, for some reason I thought FFXI would be a game I'd really sink some time into....sadley, I didn't realize that to actually GET anywhere, I'd have to sink SO MUCH TIME into that it was not possible for me to do anything else. So I gave up....
FFXI w/ HD - 50.00 (goodwill)
Network Adapter - 40.00
Keyboard - 20.00
Strategy Guide - 20.00
2 month subscription - 26.00
Total wasted money - 156.00
Oh man. :(

With me it tends to be accessories which I think would be great but then I never use -
PS2 Skateboard - I bought 2 at £1 each (plus £7 postage) which was a bargain but I really didn't have the room and they weren't as fun as I thought they'd be so sold them on.
Tam Tam Paradise - Odd Jap Music game where you strap the controllers around your legs...
Taiko no Tatsujin - I love Bemani type stuff but this was too easy to be any fun so sold the game and the big drum on at a loss.
Then there's the joysticks- the Alien shaped stick, the grenade, the power glove type playstation pad... it goes on....

FF11> You should've got the pc version first to test it out. I know not everyone can run it, but then hey you're only out a bit. And if nothing else you never have to buy another ps2 mem card again:)
Me my regrets.... buying wwf raw for xbox at full price, thankfully I was able to trade it in a week later for the goodness that is halo:)
I don't have to omany regrets anymore since I wait for prices to drop before I buy a game, that way if it isn't good, I am not out much.

i also forgot to mention buying a $40 boxed game gear (majesto) and like cmosfm,
FFXI/HD: $100
Players guide: $20
Subscriptions: about $45
Buying Gil Online(my biggest regret): $30
all in all about $200....

You know, I did that crap too! Only it cost me $40 instead of $50, plus the game's still sealed (not the Hard Drive, though). I might be able to use the HD for something like that Resident Evil game...I dunno. :P

A used complete copy of the Majesco repro of Contra III: The Alien Wars from EB Games for $20.00. At the time, I didn't know that Majesco reissued certain SNES games. Also, most of the cheap PS1 games I own suck soooo bad.

My main regrets are:
-Three GBA games from eBay that ended up being bootlegs
-A horrible hard plastic DDR pad for DC that was extremely noisy and painful to step on

-Super Mario 64, loose, for $15, shortly after I bought my N64 earlier in the year. I've seen at least 3 copies at $5 each since then.
At least it's a good game, but I could have saved ten bucks.

My big regret are my two 3DO machines and the 60+ games I have. The 3DO isn't a bad system by any means, but you have to draw the line somewhere and concentrate on what you love. My 3DO stuff is sitting in a basement two states away. LOL

i consider this a game. anybody want it? :)
dude, your goodwill rocks. it sold ffxi for 50!?!? What?!?!?!?!?!?!
my goodwills only sell genesis sports games. actually last night i went there to buy fatal fury 2, but it is a good thing i looked in the box, because chillin chillin right in there was a sonic 2 cart.
and if you guys have tons of extra games for sale, i'll buy some for like $0.50 a piece. if they are a waste of space, let me know and i will give it a good home.

I think that I paid too much for Klonoa and Radiant Silvergun, although I don't regret having them.
As the board's resident Steel Battalion apologist, I must point out that the game only gets better as you progress farther into it. The first-generation "Decider" VT you start the game in moves at a snail's pace compared to, well, just about everything else you unlock later. Also, the speed and refire rate of the shots increases dramatically if you unlock the higher difficulty levels (by completing the campaign).
Of course, if you have trouble controlling the game when it's essentially in slow motion, well, I don't know what to tell you.
Finally, the SB: Line of Contact online sequel/expansion is much faster than SB on Rookie or Normal; it's more like playing SB at "Magnum Force" difficulty.

I can't say there's really anything I wish I hadn'tbought...there's a few things I know I payed way too damn much for, but even the really crappy stuff I have is cool just for the crap factor! LOL

I guess my Channel F. Got it at a flea market for a cheap price, but it turned out to be broken. Now I have this useless hulk lying around, but I don't want to pitch it because it's so wonderfully retro. And then I went and bought a Studio II -- knowing full well that it didn't have its special switchbox and I wouldn't be able to use it -- just to have one. I'm an idiot.
On the other hand, I probably get the same amount of use out of these as I would if they were working (meaning: none). At least this way I'm not tempted to buy games for them. LOL

Actually a friend of mine had a PS2 with network/HD, and we used to play REO on it all the time with the enhanced HD features. There are even two different types of rooms in the game, HD games and DVD-Rom games.
A complete 32X collection. I worked and worked at getting it all. Then, almost as soon as I was done with it, I just didn't care any more. I guess that it was the thrill of the hunt. It certainly wasn't the thrill of the games. O_O
