... is the AV famicom my only option? I see the old style famicom all the time on eBay but apparently you need an AV mod or a japanese TV correct? Any famicom sages want to help me out? I have no desire to use a pirate system, I'd like an official one because I'm picky. Anyone with know-how on this please respond, i've never worked with older japanese systems before.

I have heard that some people can get their old Famicom system to work on American TV's, but I do not have one and thus can't say for sure.... The AV system does have one disadvantage though..... It does not have the microphone in the P2 controller. I believe that it had uses in various games (Zelda; screaming into the microphone killed/stunned/whatevered Pols Voice) . I would say go for the AV Famicom and maybe buying the old one later just to have it (which I plan to do, but don't want to spend the money right now). I don't believe I have seen any AV Famicoms lately on ebay. But then again I have not purchased many Famicom things lately

EDIT: I also think I heard that some people with an old Famicom would get picture on one channel and sound on another. Also, there are two types of old Famicoms: one with square buttons and one with round ones. One is rarer than the other but I cannot remember which one..... I think it was mentioned on |tsr's old site (NES archive).

When I had my Famicom (one of the originals), it would run fine on channel 96, complete with sound. Sure, the picture wasn't that great, but it was watchable.

I have both versions... I iaccidentally killed the original one from the wrong AC adapter (oops :embarrassed: ) but even before I killed it, it wouldn't work on my TV.

My AV Famicom has never failed me. I suggest getting one since it uses the same AV cables as the SNES, N64, and GCN.

Square-button versions are rarer, I believe they were only produced early on in the system's lifespan. Might not hurt to pick one up if you see it.
