So I couldn't help finally picking up THUG this week since CC had it for $15. Come to find out, however, it freezes like a lake in the winter, which is to say often, and for long (/indefinite) periods of time. I started up a game in story mode earlier today and was fiddling around with the soundtrack (changing it off of one of the ear-raping numbers they put on this soundtrack) when the game just froze. I dunno why, but I figured it was no big deal, I'd had other games freeze on me before and I had saved recently. No big deal. Actually, yes, it was a great big huge annoying fucking deal. It seems every time I start up this game I freeze about 5 seconds after it stops loading. Multiple resets of the Xbox proved this was going to be something that I couldn't do anything about.

Fine, I thought to myself, I'll start up another game, I wasn't too far along. So I proceed to make another custom character, start up my game and beat the first little subsection of the first level, when I hear some other shit song start coming out of my speaker, so I go to switch it off there, and the game freezes up again, only this time I hadn't saved (I figured the last freeze had come up after a save, I'd better use them more sparingly).

I just cut the game off and am considering returning it, as freezing that many times in less than 2 hours is just totally unacceptable in my opinion. How'd this make it out of the gate, let alone become one of the top-selling games last Christmas? One of the things I'm assuming may be the culprit is that I have it running in high definition (720p), which the back of the package makes it absolutely clear it supports, so there should be no qualms about playin it in such. What a way to piss on a good time.

I've had this for the Xbox since it was released and have played the hell out of it. Never froze up on me once. Although I have never tried to change the soundtrack. I might have to give it a try and see if it becomes a problem.

THUG never froze for me once on my Xbox and I played it into the ground.

Well, I gave it another try after saving and turning off the Xbox to do something else. I loaded up normally, got five seconds into the game and it froze. I turned off and rebooted, said no to the "would you like to load the last save" and manually loaded the save from the story menu. Freeze. Cut off and rebooted, loaded this time from the options menu on the main screen. Freeze. This brings me to my next step in the game:

Returning this buggy motherfucker to the store and getting my money back. For the record, I feel burned enough by this to never buy another Tony Hawk game again, despite having played through previous installments with every character. I'm pissed.

Is the disc scratched in any way?

Perhaps it could be something wrong with the way the laser reads discs as well.

I would give the Gamecube version a shot if all of these criteria were met:

- 720p
- non-shitty dpad
- reasonable button layout for a TH game

Well, it failed miserably on all accords.

The disc is perfect. It went straight from the package to my Xbox and I even checked to make sure there wasn't a blemish on it, but it's perfect. I'm returning it this afternoon.

Is it possible that the custom soundtrack option is the source of the bug?

I don't believe so, I didn't fool with the soundtrack at all during the second round of trying it, so the soundtrack should be irrelevant at this point. Also, I just got back from trading it for another copy so we'll see how that goes.

Also, since "custom soundtrack" was mentioned, I felt obliged to share this odd little tidbit about my Xbox: I have a third-hand Xbox (a friend of mine sold it to another friend who traded it (being a Philips) for mine (a Thomson)) which had been software hacked by the second user and then unhacked (so I could play on live). Anyway, I now, somehow, have the song "Rock You Like a Hurricane" on my Xbox. This song is undeletable no matter how much I try, and it's not labeled or anything. In fact, it shows up as a corrupted file in the memory management screen. Kinda odd I thought.

At least you got a good song taking up permanent residence on your system!

... or wait. It's not the Captain & Tenille version, is it? :P

Nope, it's the original!

In other news, the new copy locks up the same way the old one did, so this sucks. I know it may not be their fault, but things like this make me never want to support the developer/publisher again.

I don't know what the problem could be. My first thought was that it could be the Thomson drive, which many people seem to have trouble with (although I haven't had trouble with mine). The only game that has froze up on me is Vice City, and that was once or twice in 30-40 hours or more of gameplay.

There could be something wrong with your hard drive though, which may also explain why you can't get rid of "Rock You Like a Hurricane." Even if you're not using custom soundtracks, many games still use the HD to cache game data. Maybe there is some problem with it, and the game is trying to copy data to the drive but can't. I don't know what you could do about it though, other than maybe getting your Xbox modded and having a new HD installed.

Since the new copy locks up the same way the old one did, the problem is almost certainly your Xbox and not the game.

It's odd that this is the only game I've ever had do this way. Also, I'm using a Philips drive, not a Thomson. Either way, I don't think I'll be giving it another shot...2 is plenty.

I got my xbox from a pawn shop and the Star Wars game I bought locked up all the time. I checked a few message boards and everyone's recommendation was to format the HD. I erased everything (had nothing to lose) and it quit locking up. Whether it was a coincidence or not I couldn't say.

Quick question:

Did you call MS and get the code to format the HD, or did you do something that would be considered "hacking" the Xbox. The main reason I ask is because I play a ton of Xbox Live and I can't do anything that would make my Xbox appear to be hacked, since that would void me playing Live....

i have it for ps2 and it works just fine and dandy, maybe you should takeit back and try and trick them and get it for a dif console

Again, with multiplatform games, unless there is a major difference, I always go for the Xbox version. Otherwise I might as well take a shit on my HDTV and 6.1 home theater. Anyway, I'm considering calling MS support and getting the format code thingie.

Just poppin' in to say that my PS2 version works fine and dandy.

Although THUG = SUCK in my opinion.

LOL, the story mode killed it for me. I still like the classic Tony Hawk timed levels.

Ok, continue!
