holy valhalla this is a tough question. GB, NES, SMS, TG16(yeah, yeah, the old argument, but the core is eight bit...) vectrex, coleco..the list goes on..must be considered...basically everything in DP7 plus game boy and game gear!!!:-S

on that note, i rate this question impossible to answer. However, i'll say Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!!!!

Wonder Boy III The Dragon's Trap you deluded fools!!!

yes!! another wonder boy fan!! and i thought i was the only one. although i am a big wonder boy fan, i can't pick it because the turbo geafx version dragons curse is so much better. which is also why i would not pick river city ranson, downtown nekketsu is so much better.

there are so many great games it would be a toss up between kid icarus and spellcaster for the sega master system. I think i may be leaning more toward spellcaster. such a great game.

This is my favorite game from my childhood, and I think it is the greatest 8 bit game. It honestly looks like an early 16 bit game. HUGE levels as well!
SMB 3 is the obvious choice, but I thought I'd go a different route.
Call me a Fanboy, but you can't possibly say any of the earlier 8 bit systems have a game better than SMB 3 or any great NES title.

Thank Christ; I was about to the end of the list and hadn't seen it mentioned once yet. Although I appreciate SMB3 and think it is a good choice, really, Battletoads makes it look like Solitaire.

Not only is Battletoads my favorite 8-bit game, it is my favorite console game.

Thing is, the best 8-bit game is also the best game for any console....
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Bros. runs a close second.

You've got it backwards. SMB is the greatest 8bit game of all time. SMB3 runs a close second :P

This is one of the rare times I won't pick Metroid. But Metroid is a very close second to... Super Mario Bros. 3.

(I fucking love sunsoft's 8-bit era. They were the TREASURE of their time before Aero and US Devs came in and killed them in the 16-bit era.)
Absolute Best 8 bit games:
U-Four-ia (Hebereke) (NES/Fami)
(Mr.) Gimmick! (NES/Fami)
Sweet Home (Fami)
Mario Bros 3 (NES/Fami)

SEGA:
Shinobi 2 (GG)

Golden Axe on SMS.

I used to keep one of my old school assignments, which was about writing an X-mas story. In my story, Santa's pixies would sometimes throw blue potions up in the air, in order to invoke magic. Well, I thought a lot about Golden Axe in those days.... :)

So hard to say what is the best game of the legendary 8-bit era.

Don't forget all the old computers that had all kinds of great games in the 80's.

Ive gotta go with Lode Runner or Sabotage on Apple II
