what is it would you say?
the amount of spare Megadrive Sonic 1's i have stacking up is telling me something...
any advances on Sonic 1, there has to be.. Didnt SMB sell a record figure or something?

SMB/DH. 50 millions NES's sold, I'd say at least half had it as a pack in. Undoubtedly the most common game in existence.

What about E.T. for the 2600? Aren't there like 32,000 burried in the desert?

I'm sure the "SMB/DH" cart is #1.
But I'm surprised nobody threw in "Tetris" for the original Game Boy.
That one has to be up there with "Combat."

It wasn't "32,000" E.T. carts -- it was over 5 MILLION. And they were steamrolled and then covered in concrete to keep people from digging them up. And, they threw in 5 MILLION unsold Pac-Man carts too.

I'd guess all the pack in games (Combat, SMB, and Sonic) are all up there. For the Atari, you'd have to add Pac-Man and E.T.

This side of the pond, I'd certainly peg it on Sonic. Probably with Sonic 2 as the runner up.

Super Mario/Duck Hunt by a landslide

GB Tetris is pretty common, seeing as it was a pack-in. But you STILL can't buy it for 25 cents like you can a SMB/DH or ET or Combat cart. Original GB Tetris STILL fetches more money than I would expect on 'Bay.
$16.09 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8125931315&rd=1)
$10.00 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8125931872&rd=1)
$12.06 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8126023891&rd=1)
$9.99 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8125931232&rd=1)
For a dirt-common game, it still fetches nearly $10 all the damn time! x_x

it just might be sonic if you look at worldwide gaming. sega seems to have been much bigger in europe, australia and south america, and there sure are a lot of them here in the US also.

There is no other correct answer than smb/dh.

Its GOTTA be SMB/DH. Although I would like to see a top 10 or 20. I wonder if we can take ET, and Pacman out of the top 10 since the amount buried doesn't count.
Which is more common? Combat, ET, Pac Man?
By the way, if anyone wants to find the spot and dig through the concrete, I believe they destroyed the games first...

I'm pretty sure i read somewhere that there was 2 E.T.'s for every 1 Atari 2600. I'm probably wrong tho.

I was actually thinking of writing a screenplay on this very subject.
A "coming of age" movie, so to speak. Like "Stand by Me" meets "The Goonies." Meets "Jenna Loves Rocco." Or something.
In retrospect, it's probably the worst idea for a movie ever.

Actually that could be pretty funny if you ask me. If i asked someone what a movie was abouit and they said "some kids go try to find the secret ET 2600 burial ground" I'd probably want to see it. They need to, you know, do some other stuff too though.

Damn it, now i'm inspired to write this. It'll be set for a late Saturday night/Big Chuck and Little John movie slot in about 3 years after release.

Why didnt they just sell teh pacman and et carts for like .99 each. They would have made a lot of money probably instead of making nothing.

32,000 would be a pretty rare game! Like Flack said. Didn't know about the 5M Pac Man carts out there. Good riddance! LOL
I see a lot of Sonic 2 games at my local Goodwill, but others tend to have at least a few SMB/DH carts. Go figure.
@ Charitycasegreg: Then they don't get the full tax write-off. If they destroy the things and claim it as a loss, they get more bling per...thing. Yeah.
As for Tetris-games...well, there's a lot of clones, but how are you gonna count it? Times variants of the games have been downloaded/installed? Computers with Tetris installed? It would be very hard to get a count since the game's been distributed via BBS and everything else - illegally and otherwise.

Not really.
They produced far more carts than there was demand for. It cost money to store and ship these things, plus having cheap games means people might not buy your latest 25-30 dollar title.
Plus it was a great tax right off. Atari made far more by doing this than if they did what you suggest.
