I just got mine in the mail today and I'm having a ball reading it.

I notice that a lot of items are unpriced though, is this because a value really hasn't been set on the item yet?

On the funny side I just read that the entire US Game.com library of 20 games is valued at only $36 according to this guide. LOL

What's unpriced? That seems odd unless it's Rumor Mill/Prototype stuff...

I know that John didn't get to Jaguar hardware and many Lynx titles aren't priced but that should be the extent of it.

Glad you're enjoying the book - I was really happy with the way it turned out!

Advance Guide = joy wrapped in bliss. Get it if you didn't order it yet! In related news, reading Keir's CD32 section sorta makes me want to seek one out to check out it's library.

Yeah, and according to this guide, I've been sitting on an R8 for the past 4 years and never even knew about it.

Neo Geo Pocket Platinum Silver Pack - $85, R8

I thought it was bloody common!

I've had it since CGE and its already been used many many times. A very solid investment indeed :D

Neo Geo Pocket Platinum Silver Pack - $85, R8

Is that just the boxed Platinum Silver machine?
I had one of those, but sold it for about £20 a year or two back. Never seemed that rare to me, either.
Guess that deserves an almighty "D'oh!"

I didn't have time to go through the hardware entries for the NGPC section (long story) only the games. So that's what was already there by whomever decided. I actually have the platinum one at home myself from 2000...

UPDATE.

I got confirmation from my wonderful shipping guy that 100% of all paid US pre-orders have been sent, 90% of overseas pre-orders have been sent, and he's already taken out some of the orders that came in after CGE.

Now, to the contributors and staff - if you have not received your book by September 15th, please let me know. It's just a business rule to ship to paying customers first and the comp copies second but I want to make sure you all get your books before the next big wave.

Enjoy!

09-10-2004, 10:29 PM
Yeah, what's going to happen with the stuff that was cut from this one?

And I noticed a annoying error -- it was in the original one but seems more common here. Text when talking about the features or cheat codes or easter eggs of the games is cut short and it just goes into the games scores. You're reading along and suddenly WHAM! The sentance is chopped off. I can provide examples if anyone wishes. Who ever did the final editing needs to be shot. :)

Queen Of The Felines

The stuff that was cut is still available in the online guide. A pain in the butt, sure, but it's there. :)

I guess I need to be shot. Unfortunately for all of us, Microsoft products don't talk to each other very well. I've done everything I can to minimize those cut-off sentences but it's just impossible to edit 15000 game entries.

Sorry this ruins your experience with the book (this being your only comment). I'll try harder next time provided I'm not shot dead.

WoO! I'm very happy to say that my Guide arrived today, and it's every bit the definitive tome I'd hoped for. Had a quick flick through and ended up getting absorbed for an hour or two :)

Casting an over-critical eye over the Megadrive section (hey, I'm allowed to since I helped write it ;) ) I've spotted a couple of typos that slipped through (despite the fact that I must have checked it all at least a dozen times!) and there's a couple of truncated descriptions again :( [Wily Wars was the first one I spotted].
There also seems to be something strange going on with the Genesis/MD accessories - they almost all seem to say 'Released No' or 'Released Yes' in the description despite the fact that they were all definitely released. Must be beasties in the mainframe somewhere.
Also, it would have been nice to seperate the Euro/Brazilian MD games, but at least this can all be fixed for the Import Guide :)

Don't want to sound too negative though, because it's a truly stellar effort all-round. It's going to take a long time to truly assimilate...

I got mine on saturday. It is a nice guide, I can overlook the cutoff sentences, its not a big deal since you did your best. We will have to start an addendum style thread for all of the missing hardware. I was curious to see why the SuperVision and the Interactive vision were not in there, not a big deal I was just wanting to get more familiar with the Supervision.

SuperVision and PC-FX were the final cuts from the book. There wasn't enough interest-to-page-count ratio and as you can see it was a lot of stuff to squeeze into 512 pages. I DO have those sections and can have them online as well.

As for those cut-off sentences, I know they suck and they were a big problem in my editing process but I couldn't catch them all. I would really appreciate if you find cut-offs to PM me with the game title and section so I can contact the appropriate section editor to correct them in our database.

Got mine a few days ago... it's great!

Now.. I got a question - why was the TG-16 included in this release and the original guide's release?

Two reasons.

1. From here on out, it's being considered a "post 8-bit era" system, hence, inclusion in the Advance guide.

2. Lots of work went into the PC Engine section, as well as re-vamping the pricing of the original guide, which was hideously off.

I got mine a few days ago and have been enjoying it. I especially like the remembrances...the E.T. story especially...many of us didn't realize why back then that it was all that bad. I wish I had a great gaming story to tell but my gaming life has been fairly dull...maybe I'll think of something sometime. Since I've been buying games for some of the later systems of late, this guide will definitely help me plan future purchases. I'm especially glad to finally see a complete Playstation list. Maybe I'll even look for a few more Jag games?

Got mine a while ago (gotta love pre-ordering!), but hadn't checked in here in a while. School, work and stuff, you know.

Yeah, I noticed a few cut-off paragraphs here and there, and the lack of pricing/rarity on certain things, but what must be remembered is that this is the first edition of this effort. In fifteen years, we'll all look back fondly on it and say, "Remember when you could buy a PlayStation 1 for $10?"

The only thing I saw as a glaring omission was the lack of hardware and accessories pricing in some sections -- mainly for Game Boy and Game Gear, but others seem to be slightly lax in this area as well. Lack of info, or just too much work dealing with cartridges alone?

It's okay -- Joe's going to be shot anyway, so I'll rest easier. LOL

In all honesty, though, it's an awesome book. At least as great as I'd expected, and the future potential is huge. I'm more than willing to help out with the book's improvement in any way that I can, too.

One futuristic thought -- any plans to do a "portables-only" edition? Starting with the Microvision and ending with GBA or N-Gage. That way, you could add in all the Nintendo/Tiger handhelds and the Coleco/Entex mini-arcades as well.

I must agree - though I will also say that I have no interest whatsoever in pricing out hardware, especially peripherals. I should probably be more interested in it, but I'm not, and as one revered reader said long ago "as Joe goes, the DP guides go". It's always been about the games to me, and as such that's all I really badger the other editors about.

We're pretty close to such a thing, but before that would come an "import guide". Really, I ended up cutting out so much excellent import information (take a look at the Super Famicom section or the PSX imports or the Saturn PAL section fo the database for a hint) that it truly deserves its own book. I'm recharging now - and come the start of 2005 I should be an Energizer bunny of projects. Hang in there and your hopes will likely become a reality. We certainly have an incredible team of contributors.

Thanks for the feedback!

i dont mind the cut off sentences so much, but there are a whole bunch of typos....someone should read through and correct them. just a pet peeve. i understand you cant very well run this thing through a spell check, as every 5th word would come up as incorrect....

as for the content, ive been reading both guides since i got them and am quite impressed by all of the knowledge. i knew you guys knew your stuff, but damn! i cant imagine how much time has been put into each section. researching 500+ games? on the new systems may not be as difficult, but the older stuff has got to be horribly time consuming.

anyway, keep up the good work guys!

As far as the Game boy hardware, the hardware was a complete oversight and I intended to get the basics (systems, printer, camera) done by the deadline but it didn't happen. As for a more thorough list of accessories, it will take longer to compile then the games I think. Before I commit myself to that, I want to round out the non-US Euro releses and bring the GBA section up to date, which is what I'm working on now.

Please please please email me if you find typos or cut off sentences - it's never too late to fix those things!

For the record, I DID run a spell-check. It took nine hours to complete it but as you might imagine, there are a lot of words that are "valid" in the video game world that will turn up as typos in real world text. Quite troublesome. I count on our editors quite a bit in this area, it's difficult to manage.

Good question. It's listed with two different part numbers in Europe . Not sure why that is, but I can consolidate the two under one entry until we unravel the correct number.

I don't think anyone's got that at the moment. There are still a few "orphans" looking for qualified experts. Coleco ADAM, PS2 (good gawd) and Saturn Japan being among those.

i can answer that :) i didn't do the stuff for the guide, but i'm doing it now, the reason for the two Crash Dummies version (the same for 5 Mario kart versions and all that stuff) is: one is the German version, one the UK (see the -NOE and -UKV codes)

this is the huge problem with europe, every country got it's own versions in a lot of cases, so you can expect multiple entries for every game that hasn't got the -EUR code :-/

so, both numbers are correct

Me too! I especially like the total item counts after each section. And I can't believe someone even attempted making a Gameboy list, let alone accomplished the feat.
