Picked this up today. I have to say, I am very happy with the new Burnout. Most definitely worth the 49.99 admission price. I was a little worried when I found out EA games would have a hand in putting this one out, as they aquired Criterion from Acclaim.
Crash Mode-Most excellent. Steering your car after the crash and being able to blow it up (sometimes more than once) to cause more damage is sweet. trying to grab all of the multiplier icons is a nice extra as well.Added to the fact that in it can help or hurt your score. Nothing like crashing a car strategically.
Racing: A huge improvement over last year. The AI has been given a much need boost. As a result, races are not as much of a push-over as before. The com. controlled drivers will pay you back if they get a chance. Again, the extras that are added make the racing that much better. The boost meter plays a bigger factor in the outcome of a race. There are a ton of ways to get your boost meter to fill. So, even if a driver is at the back of the pack, adding to the boost can jet one to the front in no time. Also, it's nice that you can once again steer a hulking beast after a wreck to nail opponets.
Graphics are crisp and the sound department is almost overwhelming. Nothing like watching glass, metal, and tires fly with life like sound all from the comfort of ones living room. All that is missing is the smell of burning rubber, heated metal, and various car fluids.
Criterion could have just released a Burnout 2 sports style update and it would have sold through the roof. Instead, they release a perfect console homage to classic arcade style racing.
I miss going to the arcades if only to pop in 4 quarters to play the newest "sit in the car" cab. Arcade racing is back and better than ever.
Thanks Criterion/EA.
Burnout 3 Fucking rocks! \m/
Time to get a few beers and call up the friends.

Sounds like an awesome game. I'll probably get it when the price drops, since I'm a cheap ass. LOL I still have a lot to do in Burnout 2.

I agree. This game is amazing! I just spent the better part of the last 4 hours going head to head with a buddy of mine. My only complaint is the lack of options for junctions and cars when you first start. Other than that, this game is the best $50 I've spent on a single game in a LONG time!
Just go buy it!! @_@

When I play racing games, I ususally play Wipeout or F-Zero. The only real "Car" racing game that I ever fell in love with was Ridge Racer Type 4...until I got Burnout 3 - Takedown.
This game is excellent. Buy it, Borrow it, Rent it, Download it, whatever you can do to make sure that you at least play this game once.

i actually found out about the burnout series a year or so back from watching a show on g4 called arena. they did the crash mode for one of the rounds in that show. it looked uber fun, so i went and bought the 1st burnout. no crash mode, but game was crazy good. after that it all went uphill. i am just hoping that in this one, they changed tha ai a little bit. the comp would crash like 50 times, and still be right behind you after a 4x burnout. it got kind of annoying after awhile. i am waiting until i can afford this, but it is on my must buy list

i guess i'm just singing to the choir here, as not a single negative comment has yet been made about this game; but man, Burnout 3 fucking rocks \m/
i like the fact that all the modes are incorporated into the world tour mode, so it keeps it pretty varied... other than that, i think everything else that is awesome about this game has already been detailed above. =)
oh, and the ability to use your own custom soundtrack on the xbox version = A+++
this game is probably going to end up owning my life for the next few weeks, and frankly, i'm not going to mind

Unbelieveable. It's so... FAST!
A game where you really do have to look as far down the road as possible and still navigate and battle with everything around you. Hey, I love the Destruction Derby series and was having a blast with Test Drive: Eve of Destruction when I decided to give this one a go. Though it's a very different kind of game, you just can't beat the crashes in this game, and the scoring system and diversity of the tracks and objectives, with continually unlocking levels and cars... just outstanding game design in every sense of the word.
I have a question for Burnout SERIES fans. I own the original Burnout, never even opened it. What is the difference between the first, second and this new third game? Is it worth it for any reason to play the previous two or is everything from those pretty much contained in this one?
Oobgarm

Things that make Burnout 3 better:
Crash Aftertouch
Takedowns
Those two things aren't in the first two games, and overall, the game's got a lot more polish to it than the previous releases.
Burnout and Burnout 2: Point of Impact are both good games, but each successive release overshadows the previous one. Burnout 2 had a much more robust Crash mode, and Burnout 3 is just more robust overall.
Leave it in the package, enjoy part 3, says I.

"Get one in the next level"? Not sure I understand. The crash modes you just plow into the busiest area of traffic, pick up icons when you can (the x2 or x4 almost always allow you to hit the gold requirement), when you've reached the number of crashes required, your score "counts" and your red button becomes a detonator for your own car, causing even more mayhem as you can then guide the exploded heap using aftertouch.
It's a brilliant game.
Anyone free for some Burnout 3 Xbox Live tonight?

This game is awesome.
My only complaint is that in just over 4 hours of play time the game has frozen 3 times on me. Once it gave me the disc is dirty error, another during loading, and the last time in game. Anyone else have a problem with this?
Also, is there a way to save the sound settings? I always put it on my custom soundtrack and turn the announcer off, and every time I turn the game on, I gotta hear those crappy EA trax and manually change the settings again.
This game is a rush though, Driving on the wrong side of the road, boost going the whole time weaving in and out of oncoming traffic is wild. Also going on takedown rampages kicks so much ass, and crash mode is a blast.
DP, I may be down for some live tonight before 8 (I'm gonna watch the final World Series of Poker episodes) But my internet has been flaky recently, so we'll see.

Maybe you've chosen single event? You have to play World tour for a while until you get to the first crash mode event, after you get bronze or better there, the next crash levels become available.
It's a great game, the feeling of speed is conveyed very realistically. A few things that annoy me a little though: it loads very often (crash mode especially, where it first loads the preview, then loads the actual race itself), you can't skip some of the anims you've seen a thousand times before, the countdown in crash mode (why is it there?) and the cars in each class look too similar and hardly differ in handling etc.

I agree that there are too many loads but one of the positives of the game is that the loads are very fast. If the trade-off is several short loads that are much shorter than a single load, I'll take the short ones. You never really feel like you're "waiting". At least I don't.
I think that crash mode countdown is pretty important. Without it, how would the round end? It's basically telling you all of the cars have stopped: are there any last requests?

@Joe... okay seeing as I've played all three now (and the first two in the series to death) here's my honest assessment of the games in the Burnout series.
Burnout - pure unadulterated street racing. The closest of the series to MSR and PGR in terms of needing the driving skills at the foremost to succeed. Going too fast around corners would wipe you out. You had to know the courses to be good. Burnout was a bonus for good driving skills, not a means that you had to use it to win all the time. Highest level of traffic density of the three, meaning you need to be able to react and deal with more situations than the other two games. Traffic AI was good, but not great in terms of swerving into you. My personal favourite of the series, but that's because I prefer this type of real driving game to the other two in the series so far.
Burnout 2 - faster and quicker, but about the same in terms of length and overall easier than BO1. Focus was on the burnout meter, and the courses were designed more to allow you in some cases to fully burnout the entire duration of the race given the right circumstances. Courses were not quite as good for this reason imo, you still needed the skills but with less traffic and slightly more forgiving collision detection, you could crash less and keep going more. Felt slightly more arcadey in the car handling. AI is the worst of the three, cars quite often ransomly swerve towards you instead of away, meaning plenty of unpredictable crashes. Introduction of crash mode, which is a brilliant party game.
Burnout 3 - far more arcadey than the other two games. Focus is on taking people out in the race. Burnout is less focused on, even though you can use it for almost as much as you could in BO2, because the primary means to earn it is by taking people out; oncoming traffic, near misses etc don't pump up the boost bar at quite the rate as before. Handling in on a part with BO2. Ingame racing the fastest of the three, competition with other drivers is good, making it more towards BO1 than BO2 in terms of racing. Collision detection is the loosest of the three so far; you can really go into walls and not crash quite often. Whilst I understand this is facilitate the takedown modes, it means you don't need the driving skills or knowledge of the courses as much to avoid crashing. Which is sad. Crash mode is still good, but sadly hampered by the bonus symbols which almost signpost how to get a good score on each one rather than you having to figure it out. Oh and Live is broken until EA fix it (which I believe they are doing at this moment).

09-14-2004, 03:31 PM
Oh definitely... in the first Burnout, you needed to get your speeds and angles good to not only avoid crashing into the sides of the road but also to avoid the copious amounts of traffic. Anyone who's only played B2 and B3 might not realise just how much B2 was different from B1 at the time. All three games are quite different in what they offer and B3 admitedly has many similar features for NFS:U (another EA title).
As for Xbox Live, there are frequent crashes in the lobby, the ability to see your friends but have no clue where they are in the B3 online world, the game failing to connect a lot of the time when the servers are busy etc.
This article from NTSC-UK should sum up everything (hopefully) being sorted out at the moment...

No, I meant the countdown when starting (3,2,1,GO) - it's surplus imo.
I am totally into the new burnout. It kinda reminds me of Crazy Taxi by the sense of chaos you get when you first play the title. I have the 2nd Burnout and it can't touch the latest version. Great racer! I hope it sells real well. I can't stand racings sims, esp. the Gran Turismo series. Arcade racers forever!!!!!

For anyone complaining about the level of difficulty, just wait until you get to the very end. Some of the Burning Laps are downright insane, and the final GP with the formula 1 cars is unbelievably hard.
I have 170 gold medals, and have unlocked 172 events. I haven't had the moxy to go through and actually try out the f1 grand prix again, and I've got a silver on the Classic Hotrod Burning Lap... and I've deemed that absolutely impossible.
I've got all the crash headlines, 11 signature takedowns, 9/10 postcards... something like 800 total takedowns, a million burnout points, 110 million crash damage... I've played this game... a lot.
I love it to death, and later in the game it really finds a sweet balance of difficulty and frustration, and when you complete some of those burning laps with Gold, it's incredibly rewarding.
I really want to jump on Xbox live but I can't jsut yet

@Butta-I had the game freeze up on me three times the day I bought it. I have done some modding to my x-box, so, I think that may have something to do with it. Everytime it would freeze up, it was during a loading screen. Haven't had a proble, with it since then though.
Also, if you have Auto save on, it saves after the race. I thought I lost some progress that first day also.

In a rant cut from my other frequented board, me after trying the F1 grand prix FIRST RACE for 2 hours.
The last Grand Prix is impossible. There is no way anyone can beat it, and it's gone right on ahead and fucked up a perfect game. Up til now there was a good balance of ease and difficulty, but this is impossible.
It's a grand prix with all f1 cars, which are just about impossible to take down, but they can take you out no problem. If you're in first, the entire field is one second behind you, if you crash once, they're 20 seconds ahead and you can't catch up. What makes it worse is while driving in a car with an exposed wheel, rubbing against ANYTHING kills your speed. So no more riding the wall to be safe around a corner, cause you'll come to a dead stop.
All 4 races are 10 minutes long, and trying to drive 4 minutes in an f1 car without crashing for that burning lap was insanely hard, but this is aboslutely stupid, especially with how ridiculously agressive the AI is for this particular GP. I've tried just the first race about 30 times, and I've placed last every fucking time. It doesn't matter if I lead for 8 minutes of the race, somehow one crash totally destroys any hopes of getting points in the first race.
What makes it worse, is I can't do anything else and come back to this... I've got 170 gold medals, and have 172 events unlocked, with a silver in the other.
It's fucking retarded, if anyone else gets this far, let me know how badly you destroy your controller, xbox, and/game disc.

i was worried the emphasis of this was going to just be on crashing compared to BO2...but they integrated it so well, it doesn't feel like a destructo-racer...it just feels like a proper arcade racer with an added element of danger. :D
however, the EA acquisition worries me. i have an odd feeling this will be the pinnacle of the series. I'm not one of those "OH NOES BOYCOTT EA THEY KILL HARDCORE GAMERZ!!!11!" folks, as i think bringing games like this to a wider audience will ultimately improve EA once people go back to something like NFSU and see how poorly polished it is in comparison, but do we really need to have things like that damn EA TRAX™ banner taking up an 1/8 of the screen in the middle of a race when the song changes? i suppose that's important when you have 40 angsty pop-punk bands that all sound alike for your soundtrack. LOL are any of us going to rush out and buy tiger woods 2005, now with an added create a hat feature?
ah well, at least it doesn't have that damn lil john song in the soundtrack like everything else EA has put out in the last year. LOL
i just worry with #4, we're going to see a lot of pointless features added, and the crashing mechanic somehow added to in a way that spoils the balance of the game.
and the online debacle shows how bad MS wanted stuff like madden on live. yeesh.

Ok, I finally got online over the weekend, and it seems really buggy. If I choose optimatch with no restrictions, only 1 or 0 games comes up. If I go to a server list, I'd say 90% of the game are grey, and I can't access them. Is there some sort of update I need to dl?
Also, a couple times it told me my username was temp. locked, but 2 seconds later I got backin. This game seems to have trouble with tracking stats as well.

same issues here. i'm assuming the greyed out games are in progress.
optimatch is USELESS.
i just set up my own game, and restrict the car class. it's really the only way to play. every other game i've jumped into that is open is no fun, since there's no way everyone has all those illegible car icons memorized, to see if someone's going to play dirty. also, running something like the muscle or coupe class only makes the game a lot more accessible to people who might otherwise be great players, but just haven't had time to unlock everything yet.
i'm at about 85-90 events so far at about 15 hours (mostly golds and a couple silvers...f1 cars *cough*)...put it down for an evening to play GGX2, and i've spent a LOT of time online with it.
great game so far, and it has really whet my appetite for more arcade racers again. this is the only good one i've played since R4 on the PS1.
bring on outrun 2! :D

I just bought Burnout 3 a few days ago.
Oh my God.
I have been playing this game since the first one, and wow. I enjoyed the 1st one, but the 2nd came out and that was that.
now that the 3rd one is out, I got it, and wow. it simply blows my mind. it is honestly the best racer i have ever played.
wait until I get moved into my new apartment and get some games going, it will be on like a mafia don fellas, somebody will get a takedown or 2 or 3 from me for sure.

Sorry to bring a topic back from the dead like this, but I finally picked this up today. It's $15 at Target and frankly, if you like arcade racers, you have no excuse to not get this. It's fast, it's fun and there's lots of stuff crashing and blowing up. The only thing not to like is the EA Trax. *shudder*
Seriously though, I love racers, and even this early into it, I can say this is probably one of the best I've played. It's got it all and for $15 is a steal.

Yeah, not only is the music TERRIBLE for the most part, but (like someone else posted) the damn EA Trax banner coming up during races is awfully distracting. I just slapped on my custom soundtrack and it's much better... Slayer is much more conducive to racing destruction than pop-punk.
I got BO3 for $20 and it was well worth it... for $15 it's a steal. Though I haven't played it since I got GTA SA for Xbox, it provided a couple of fun late nights.

I also picked it up at target this week. Damm what a fun game, now im actually playing something other then halo 2, I played online a couple of times, hella fun. Im just pissed it took so long to become a platium hit, then wait for a sale for it to be $15, I even passed on it at walmart 2 weeks ago when it was on sale for $18. I knew target or best buy would have there 2 for $30 eventually. Dam I am cheap.

I hate racing games, but I must say that I find myself coming back to BurnOut 3...it has that right balance of skill & fun that transcends the racing genre into a game that even racing game haters can enjoy. Hell even my gf likes it...although her glee with takedowns is slightly disturbing.

+200 meseta for superb use of the search engine when it would have been much easier to simply start a new topic.

Thanks for the heads-up!!
I picked it up for the low price as well yesterday, and yep, it is a fantastic game.
I played Burnout and Burnout 2 and loved both games, the crash mode in the sequel is great, but I have to say Burnout 3 is a a little masterpiece of an arcade racer.
Fun, fun, and fun! Great game experience. Simple, great game design with unrealistic physics still work, don't they?

I used to play the hell out of Burnout 3 single player (or home split screen) about 9 months ago before I had Live.
My favorite game type was road rage (at least I believe it was called that) where you would compete with a buddy to see who could knock out 10 cars the fastest without completely wrecking your car.
I tried it on Live the other tnight and the Road Rage has nothing to do with that.
Does anyone know if they simply left my favorite game type out for Live?

So nobody is or has played Burnout 3 on Live?
