That one game or system that you said to yourself "Nah, not me, ain't worth it, maybe when it goes down, or No way in hell"
Well I ended up in this scenario tonight. There I was at Best Buy, it was the last one they had. Just sitting there teasing my mind and wallet.

:embarrassed: Yeah Im not big on portable systems...but god I love the NES so much..and seeing the price drop of the GBA SP...and knowing this was the last one at Best Buy...too much PRESSURE!
It Felt like Stimpy (From Ren and Stimpy) trying to gaurd the shiny red button...the candy like button! the JOLLY LIKE BUTTON!
I just couldn't control my urge to buy the one GBA SP I wanted the most since it was released back in June... :(
Yet, was it worth it? Yeesssss the sweet forbidden fruit is good...

I never pictured myself buying Beyong Good & Evil, but once i read a review on it I needed it badly! one of the best purchases i have made in gaming, worth all the $40 that i paid (which soon droped down to like $20 in a few months)

Actually, I still can't believe I bought this thing. For years I thought that Microsoft would be the curse of the gaming industry; while that may or may not be true, I do think that they have a big responsibility in Nintendo's struggle in the console market; personally, I think the Gamecube is the strongest platform, so I am still pissed at Microsoft. The only reason I bought is because I got a hell of a good deal (I paid about $50-60 for a used one, can't remember the exact amount, because I traded in about 10-12 games I bought from Circuit City for $5). To be honest, I only have two games for the console, Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick and Pirates of the Caribbean, which both came from the CC sale. I've used the system literally about 2 hours since I got it a couple months ago (although I haven't had much time to play games lately period, so that's a big reason why). My brother also bought a few games, but he's hardly played around with them, either. There are a few promising games coming out and I just figured it was worth about $50-60 bucks and picked it up on a whim; nothing less, nothing more.
This is totally off-topic, but I miss the NES days. I do not consider myself a Nintendo "fanboy" in any shape or form, but I think the overall quality of PS2's library is weak, even compared to PS1. I think PS1 was slightly better than N64, but I prefer Nintendo in the latest console war. To be honest, I think Sony is making the industry worse, encouraging derivative games. Now, before anyone says that Nintendo tried to run a ruthless monopoly in the '80's, that may be true, but I remember distinctly that the overall quality of games was a hell of a lot better back then. I'd take Nintendo's monopoly over Sony's virtual monopoly any day.

i never thought i'd pick up an intellivision. i had a 2600 as a kid, and had never played any other pre-NES system. (well, unless you count an Apple IIe as a system)... but there it was at salvation army, a model 2 with "video game organizer" and 14 games with overlays... $20. i couldn't pass that up...
i tried playing it. i hate it. will i sell it? no. will it collect dust? yes
man, i am retarded
An Atari 2600. Never really interested me, its ok, but much older then I am. So to me its more of an antuiqe then anything else.

Same choice of system - bought a really nice one (well, one of the knobs on a paddle fell off, but otherwise) for $70 from a forumer a while back - what a good purchase! I need some more games for it, though :P

A Dreamcast, I wasn't impressed at launch but now I really like it. The other one is an action max, but all of a sudden there it is at a thrift shop for 6 dollars with 4 games, I can't seem to get rid of it, I hate the thing, and holy crap, I definitely got a whole lot stupider after watching one of those videos

But eventuly the number of games out for the system and coming out for it caught up with me and I snagged a good used one with a Samsung drive. Now I'm playing on it most of the time. :)

Dreamcast. When it came out, I didnt care for any of the launch titles. I was happy with my PS1. Around 8 months after its release while at an anime convention a friend showed me a few games for it. While most of them didnt impress me at the time, there were 2 that did. Tokyo Xetreme Racer and Space Channel 5. I knew I must have them. So I bought the 2 games and ordered the system when I got home. I should have waited 4 months and bought SC5 when the price droped from 40$ to 20$. Even knowing that, I still love the game to this very day and enjoy playing it.
Actualy, owning any Sega system would be a close second. If it wasnt for the DC, I would have never looked at the Genesis, Saturn, or Nomad as being worth my time. Born Atari, switched to Nintendo, then to Sony, and finaly to Sega.
My uncle found me a complete 3D0 (sans box and instrucitons) in the trash. Never thought I'd have one of those! :P

I never thought that I'd own any of the systems that I own now. After the big crash of 1984, I swore off of buying videogames forever. That's why I never got a NES when everyone else did in 1986, and I went through the rest of the 8bit generation scoffing at those who were "foollish" enough to continue buying them when it was so "obvious" there would be another big crash. I honestly believed that Nintendo was just as foolish as the masses.
Then one fateful day in 1988, my best friend loaned me his NES and all his games, to give me something to do while I was recovering from some very painful surgery. He said "I can't figure out how to get past the wraith on Shadowgate, so see if you can figure out how to get past it for me!" So I was sucked in. At first, I called him back and said "This is stupid, I can't even figure out how to get in the damn castle!" He told me "Just keep looking around, you'll find a way in!" Well I looked all over the damn place, but I still couldn't find a way in, so I called him back again and said "Look, if you want me to figure out how to get past the damn wraith, then you're gonna have to tell me how to get in the damn door, or this ain't happening!" So he finally told me where to find the stupid key, and into the castle I went...
Oh boy, did I ever get sucked into Shadowgate! Before I knew it, there I was, standing before the wraith. So of course I called him again, in gleeful excitement. "OK I'm here, the wraith won't let me pass, so wish me luck!" Well, it took me a long time, but I finally figured it out. So I race for the phone this time. "Dude, I did it! I got past the wraith!" and he was like "I knew you could figure it out! So how the heck did you do it? I must know!" So I told him the secret and we both laughed about how obvious it was, if you really thought about it, and yet it was such a fiendishly clever puzzle! Then he says "OK, that's all I wanna know. Don't tell me anything else about it, because I wanna figure the rest out for myself when I get my game back!"
So off I went, deeper and deeper into Castle Shadowgate, exploring rooms and facing monsters that my friend had never even seen yet. I finally got stuck at the broken bridge, and I never did figure out how to cross it. My friend never figured it out either. We tried to cross it many times together after that, but we both resorted to taking turns at Blaster Master instead, in utter frustration. I got even more hooked on Blaster Master during the time that he loaned me his system, and it had me very tempted to buy one, but still I resisted. So even when it was time to give it back to him, I didn't really miss it very much. Then he got Gyruss. Oh man, now I was really fighting to keep on resisting another videogame purchase! I always loved Gyruss in the arcades, and the NES version was 10 times better than the arcade ever was!
I went to his house and played that game every chance I got. I begged him to loan me his NES again so I could get good enough at it to beat it, but he refused. He said if I really wanted it that bad, then I needed to buy one of my own, but I was always welcome to come over and play it. Well, believe it or not, I still hadn't seen the light and become a true believer yet. So I still resisted the temptation to buy a NES. My reasoning was that if I did, then it would never stop. There would always be another Gyruss or another Blaster Master that I just had to have. Because by this time, there were way more games for NES than there ever were for the Atari VCS that I used to have. Nope, I just wasn't gonna do it, I would simply wait for the next big crash. It was all so obvious that it was happening again, just look at all those games!
Now of course I went to the store to look at all the different games and all the different systems, while I was ever so foolishly fighting the urge to buy something, but this only made me even more certain that I was making the right choice. Oh look, there's an Atari 7800, no I'll never make that mistake again! I already got burned on an Atari 5200 right before the big crash, so why would I be stupid enough to buy another Atari system? Besides, they were already showing pics of that thing and all the games for it right after I sold my 2600 just so I could buy my 5200, and I promised my parents that I wasn't ever gonna need to buy another new improved Atari set again! HA!
No, I was more interested in the SMS. It had all kinds of cool looking gadgets like 3D glasses, and way fewer games that I'd have to try to keep up with, but best of all everyone else I knew had a NES! So I could be different! All my friends would want to come to my house to play it, because nobody else had one! I'd be famous! But I was still skeptical. So I resisted. And I regret it. I would LOVE to have a complete SMS collection, even to this day, but I just don't have the income to fulfill that dream right now, so I'm still waiting. And I doubt that I will ever have one. But I have an SMS emulator on my PC! ;)
Anyway, to wrap up this lengthy nostalgic post, one day when I went to the store to fight the urge again, there was a new system on the shelf. Cue the angelic choir... OMG! What is it? Lo and behold, the 16bit Sega Genesis! Now I was REALLY interested in this, and surely it MUST be a sign from the heavens! Just look at it's name! This is your new BEGINNING, you jaded old gamer you! Oh but NO, videogames BAD! Videogames EVIL! I must FIGHT! It still worked for me too, until my nephew came over with his own shiny new 16bit Sega Genesis, and it's new pack-in copy of Sonic the Hedgehog.
Now it was ON! Holy Hedgehog! Head spinning... Hedgehog looping... I... must... own... this... game... CRAP! And so there simply was no resisting it anymore. I couldn't get to the store to get one of those for myself fast enough. I became one of the biggest Sega fanboys that ever was, until DKC came out, and then I could no longer resist my urge to buy a SNES either. I fought it just like I did before, from the moment the SNES first arrived in the store, before Sonic the Hedgehog came over with my nephew and rocked my world. But now Donkey Kong was dancing all over my screen, as history repeated itself, and history was made again. Yep, my nephew had brought over his shiny new SNES, and it's new pack-in copy of Donkey Kong Country.
Damn you, nephew! Now I have to buy a SNES too! It's happening again! D...K...C... So I couldn't get to the store to get one of those for myself fast enough either, and it defiantly infiltrated my Sega fortress. I REALLY couldn't believe that I was defiling the sanctity of my beloved Sega fortress with a new Nintendo system, but there it was, proudly taking it's place right next to my sacred 32X/Genesis/Sega CD combo. Oh how I feared it. Just look at what my humble little Genesis had become! What am I gonna do if the SNES ever starts mutating like that? Luckily (Unfortunately?) that never happened, but here I am today, with 12 systems and at least 1200 games. I'm sure I have more than that now. I haven't counted them all in a long time. But it all began with the Genesis, the new BEGINNING that I knew it would be.

Up until 1999, I was a Nintendo fanboy.
Then that year, I visited a friends house and they had one. They rented Crash Bandicoot. After playing it, I had to get one. I bought one at um.. damn.. I forget what they were at the time. I hate to think it was $100, but it must have been. It was before the PSOne's came out. They were out of used ones so I got a new one. Played it for a long time then traded it in for $30 as well as all my games except one.. Bubble Bobble. Somehow I knew I'd get the PSX back one day. And I did.. for $29.99.
PS2.. My brothers BDay present from Dad. It was paid for with my rent money. A few weeks later, the price dropped to $149.99. The only games he plays on it are Final Fantasies and Kingdom Hearts. Fuck that, Square, just bring the series' to a better system. Oops.. my Zealotry is showing.
All the Sega Systems I have. As a N Fanboy, I never EVER saw myself buying a Sega system. But in 1999, the Sega Dreamcast campaign made my like Sega for the first time. Sure, it wasn't for almost 4 years that I actually BOUGHT a Sega system, but it at least broke me free from my Fanboy-ism.
Xbox. As an avid Microsoft hater I never thought I'd own an Xbox. Sure, I had a mouse from my Windows using days, but I've noticed lately that the only MS thing I really hate is Windows. So I stay away from it. But I'm perfectly happy with my Xbox and Microsoft mouse. Go figure.
Sega Pico, I couldn't resist. It was only $2.

I have three such situations:
Xbox: when this 80lb piece of plastic came out I laughed. Microsoft...making a game system...with controllers as big as my old Horizon hatchback. Riiiight. Didn't even give the system the time of day. I played some surfing game at a Microsoft booth at GenCon in 2001 and that pretty much sold me on the idea that Big Green was crud. One day as I walked through Funcoland I saw an Xbox on display showing the new Morrowind game. My jaw dropped at the quality of the graphics coming out of this system. Then I noticed the controller: smaller, more comfortable, better. After playing Morrowind for a while I knew I had to have the system and several months later I bought it (funny thing-I didn't like Morrowind on Xbox but prefer it on PC). Better gaming investment compared to my Animal Crossing Cube...er Gamecube.
GBA/GBA SP: I said to myself that I would never get such a machine. Obvious money dredging classic remakes, a screen that was hard to see and the fact that past Game Boy games didn't appeal to me. Then came Animal Crossing and the dang eCards followed by a sale that had the GBA and the reader. I took the plunge, bought the system so at least my wife could get the cool stuff for her virtual house. Then I got hooked on WarioWare and the GBA became a regularly played system. I refused to get the SP as I felt Nintendo went and shafted their existing customers.
Guess what, I bought the GBA SP NES model and I haven't looked back. It's sooo much better when I can actually SEE the games I play without mucking with the floodlight that I bought for the original GBA.
Saturn: never thought I'd own one. The games never appealed to me and to be honest most of them still don't. I went to Blockbuster to buy Yoshi's Story for my wife and they were having a tent sale. They had a Saturn with all the hookups and two controllers for $30 along with games for like $10 a pop. The collector in me took over and I bought that and a couple games rather than Yoshi's Story, telling my wife they didn't have a copy. Well, we go there the next day and she sees Yoshi's Story is in the bin and gets mad. To appease her for the time being I bought Bust a Move 2. Little did I know how addicted she would get to it. It's also the best version of that game I've ever played. Saturn isn't my fave system but right now Bust a Move 2 is what's keeping it in my posession. And maybe Tempest 2000 if I ever get it.

Been there myself bro, about 2 years ago, I finally got one complete for $180, It was like the longest journey just to obtain 10-15 games for that AES. The price was killing me, and all my friends kept telling me "Go MVS Man, you wont regret it" Well to be honest when making the switch, I got the games I really wanted (Last Blade, Samurai Shodown 4, KOF98&99) It was about the same price when I added up...but 10 titles Vs. 28 titles felt better...until I realized how much I spent :embarrassed: Ended up selling the whole lot, due to the fact I had no more room in my place for the big carts and I needed some quick cash when moving to Waco back in June :(

If my loose copy of SimEarth for SNES wasn't buried in my box of SNES carts, I'd do the same thing. I paid 6 bucks for it, still don't know what I was thinking.
Back on topic, I never thought I'd get a Gamecube. At the time, there were only two or three first-party games I was interested in and I thought I'd just continue to buy the PS2 versions of third-party releases most of the time. But a friend of mine had one and eventually I came to the decision to buy one myself and finally bought a used one in February.
I now own 14 games for it and play it slightly more than my PS2.

PS2 - Thought the thing was a POS. Physically flimsy and terrible to look at (looks like a car hifi amp). A few good games but nothing to warrant buying the system. I was having a really bad time and one day at work a PS" came in really cheap and I thought 'fuck it, it'll cheer me up for a bit'. Well, it didn't. It just sat next to my telly while I played my other systems. After a few months I traded it in a bought a second GBA SP (NES edition).
So, to cut a long story short, I never thought I would buy one and then I did and then I got rid of the shite! Don't think I'll be regreting that!

On the console side. It was the PSX (seriously). I swore off buying it for almost 3 years. Yes.. THREE years!
Well.. it was mostly because of that damn 3DO.. Jaguar.. thing. Then.. after I got my first PSX (I have 5 now.. or is it 6?) it had to be the N64 because.. just because.

I never expected to buy a Saturn. I was just starting to get settled in for some import and domestic 16 bit collecting for my SFC and Genesis when I found a near complete Saturn at the Goodwill for $13.00. My first thought when I saw it was "Hey now I can finally play Guardian Heroes!" GH is a game I always wanted to play since it was released back in the day....but I never really expected or planned to get a Saturn to play it.
After digging around the net I quickly learned that the Saturn had so much more to offer than Guardian Heroes but GH still remains at the top of my most wanted list. In a few short months my Saturn collection has grown to nearly 30 import and domestic titles and two Stunners, two model 1 controllers, two model 2 controllesr, s-video cables, crap I cant stop! There just seems to be so many games that I want to play. I plan to shell out for GH eventually but I'm still holding on to the slim chance that I may find it in the wild for cheap so in the mean time I've been trying to snap up all the sub $20 dollar games I can find. OH to make matters worse... I want an all white Satrun, jeez I never expected I'd want one of those!
Now my SFC collects dust but I'm happy to say that I've been playing more Genesis since finding a CIB model 2 for $20. Now that my Genny and 32x are hooked up I've gotten back into collecting for that system in addition to my Saturn. So now I've got my sights set on a Sega CD which I never expected to own and I've recently decided to set a collecting goal for myself and try to collect to entire 1989 Genesis line up of games, CIB of course.
And my other "never expected to buy" was my Nomad. I never even knew these existed until a friend showed me the one she had about a year ago. After playing it I had to have one and it didn't take long to find one. And thats right about the time that I joined DP. :)

Ah yes, I myself still want to get both Last Blade games, 'Slug 1 and 3, Sengoku 2, Top Hunter, Art of Fighting 3, Double Dragon, Cyber Lip, Super Dodge Ball (I'm assuming that's in AES form? Maybe not) ...and the list goes on (Ninja Master's!). Such a great system.

My least expected system would become the Turbografx 16/Turbo CD. I'm glad I did snag it, though. However, for some reason, I've fell a bit lax on my HuCard collecting in favor of Genesis games. I'll try to fix that via eBay.

I gotta go with the Gamecube. I outgrew Nintendo's demographics a long time ago. There wasn't a single GCN game I was looking forward to, and quite honestly, the lack of being able to "play" with the console (lack of mod chip, emulator, home brews, etc) was a turn off. Still, that post-Labor Day sale last year ($79 for the black GCN) was too much to resist and I picked one up despite basically no interest in the console itself.
To date, I have 2 games for it. Phantasy Star online (3 guesses why) and one of the Star Wars games.

Excellent offline play? The great soundtrack? Cute ninja robot maids?
...I guess I'm all out of guesses, aren't I? LOL
I would say that's an excellent choice for the system (and yes, I put in 90+ hours offline on a single character), but the next time Metroid Prime falls in price I'd snag that one if I were you. I'm sure there's some other good games for the system, but between you and me I'm having a bit of trouble remembering which I heard were good =P

Dreamcast. I always thought this thing was trash. Then my dad decided to buy one, one day, so I thought, What the heck. It's another video game system. Well, it was alright. I didn't know of many of the titles back then, so I sold it a while because of non-use. Well, I've recently bought it, knowing a lot of the good titles out there, and I love it.
XBox. I always told myself, never in Hell would I ever buy this piece of crap. I hated the games, I hated the controller, I hated the XBox. Then games like Knights of the Old Republic and stuff came out. I really wanted one. And I got one. And I don't regret it.
Saturn here too.. didn't want it when it was new, and now that it's older the games I'd play are too high to buy. Still ended up getting it from a friend for $10 though.. I'm planning on buying at least Nights so I don't feel like it was a waste.

I would say that's an excellent choice for the system (and yes, I put in 90+ hours offline on a single character) ...
Sorry, I thought it was more obvious than that. I bought PSO simply to use the LAN game loading hack. I've never actually played PSO.
Sega Genesis until a co-worker gave it to me free.
SNES until I got one at Goodwill (bare) for $4 (the cables cost more than the unit!)
Dreamcast until my mother-in-law got one at a yard sale (4 controllers, 16 games) for $25.

i never expected to buy an XBox, and as some of you may know, i was part of the microsoft tribe on the tribe island contest, so i made a complete turn around.
back when i first heard about the xbox, i was very into pc gaming and thought that it was just a weak pc in a box that you can hook up to your tv....i though it wasnt really a console, just a pc that looking like one
but, the i had a ps2 and a gc and said that i needed to have all 3 of the newer systems, if for no other reason, then to just have them, so i picked up my xbox....
after using it for a while, i came to realize that it was an amazing system that had loads of potential. now, i own 3 different colored xboxes and dont regret buying any of them.

:D Just to start with i wanna say a big waaaassssuuup to all my fellow gaming comrades from all over the world! these boards rock and i will enjoy hangin out with all u guys..........
I will go with the Dreamcast, got one a few weeks ago off eBay, a friend of mine bought one when they first were released and to be honest i wasnt impressed, i was at that time kinda immersed in psx/n64 fever so the dreamcast to me just seemed like a desperate attempt by sega to match the psx (which i guess in a way it was). Ive just started gettin my collection up and running again and thought i should at least give the DC a chance, and, im damn glad i did. Pound for pound (and i know i will probably get flamed to hell for this!) i think it kicks the psx ass! yes the psx has a vastly superior software library but if companies had given the DC the same attention i think we would still be seeing DC games being made today.....

Dreamcast.
Someone i knew was selling all his game systems in a yard sale (for more than they were actually worth) and i somehow got it in my head that i wanted to own a Dreamcast.
I traded in some Genesis games at a game store and came home with a used Dreamcast system, then later i got Sonic Adventure at EB. SA blew me away because at the time i had never owned anything newer than a PSX and the Dreamcast was a bit beyond what i had imagined.
Well, my Dreamcast was aching for *SOME* game that would make me say "Yup, this is why i blew store credit for this."
Enter Power Stone 2.
Between Power Stone 2, Beats of Rage, & Gauntlet Legends the Dreamcast has finally shown me that it is invaluable.
2nd would be a PSX. Bought it at a yard sale because i wanted to trade it in but couldnt because it was a first model. Kept it because "Need For Speed: High Stakes" was so damn cool.

Are you serious..? Can't be.
I for one got a few months' play time out of that game offline. Every second was good (well, except for those consumed by running, which is most of the time I must admit).

Neo Geo AES and Pocket. Got five games for AES and and 8 for pocket. The AES used to be so expensive and so were games.

System wise, I never thought I would own an Xbox OR Ps2
I won my Ps2 in a raffle
and got the Xbox for my younger bro as a b'day gift ( he does live in the same house as me, so I can play it whenever I want).
Gamecube is still my favoirte, althought I havent played it in a while

Saturn.
Never had a real reason to own one until a friend at work offered to sell me his Saturn set (including the console, one standard controller, a Stunner gun, Sonic 3D Blast and Virtua Cop 2) for $20.
I figured, what the hell, it's another system, and I like any kind of hardware.
Then I remembered, as I set the thing up, "Oh yeah -- this is the one that has NiGHTS on it!" You see, way back in the day, I remembered fooling around with the Christmas NiGHTS demo at Toys 'R Us and thinking it was a lot of fun -- except that it was on Saturn, and we "only" had an N64.
Then I played Virtua Cop 2. What an awesome shooter, and the big Stunner easily gives that true arcade feeling. (It was only later that I found out what VC2 is worth -- but mine is just a loose disc.) Still haven't picked up NiGHTS, though. It's easy enough to find on eBay, so I'll probably make the leap soon.
Sega Rally is also a fine racer, easily topping (at the time) anything that the PS1 could put out. Until Gran Turismo, that is.
Speaking of which, GT was the game that finally forced me to buy a PlayStation -- I bought one used in 1998 just to play that game. That particular console has since been traded in for a PSone -- and now a PS2, which I have purchased almost solely to play GT4 on when it arrives this winter. History repeats itself.
Lynx was another "no-way-in-hell" one for me, considering I had never even seen a Lynx in the flesh. That is, until that fateful day at the flea market when I picked one up (with California Games, even!) for three dollars.
