I remember watching Icons and the creator of mega man saying that he designed the game to have a strong musical aspect(which it does), but I think they shouda kept the original name, made more sense that way, atleast to me.

So the creator of Mega Man...you mean the name changed?

As for the "original name..." well, it's really Rockman. You know. Musical it is, quite...seriously.

but the concept of rockman made so much more sense.

you have rock(ish) music in the back ground, in MM 3 everytime protman showed up there was that little whistle sound, theres bass and treble and roll, it all makes sense when its called rockman

Actually, looking over your original post, I just now realize that you knew that. LOL

Anyhow, yeah, Rockman XBillion sounds better than Mega Man XBillion, as far as SFC/SNES goes, but for the NES originals it sounds odd to say "Rockman."

His name is 'Rock' under the nick Mega Man in the US games, good enough for me.

Why is this a rant? :)

The name Rockman is indeed derived from Rock n Roll, and the series has a musical theme (like Treble and Bass for the X series and many other names).

Here is an interesting interview with Inafune with playstation magazine for those who are interested in the history of the series:

http://www.megaman-network.com/articles/interviews/interview002.shtml

BTW, in this interview Inafune states that the original Rockman was intended from the beginning for the Famicom. In other interviews he states that the game was intended for the arcade, and only after the R&D department rejected it for the arcade it was shifted to the Famicom. Go figure. Ah, selective memory, how do I love thee.

The most puzzling Q is for me why the series is still alive without changing the basic gameplay. The series should actually be dead by now. I can't think of any other classic series with regular releases (and the MM series with the X series saw 15 releases in 16 years!) which made it to the current consoles without stepping into 3D (the Legends games were a failure, and MMx7 combines 2D with 3D, but the attarction is still 2D action)

Only Contra comes close, but the PSX Contras didn't have 2D counterparts, and Contra didn't have so many releases like MM.

The staying power of MM is unique.

There is an old Mastertronic game, a Boulderdash clone, called Rockman. Maybe this had something to do with the name change.

BTW: Avenger if the name Rockman is silly because he's not made from rocks is it cool to call him Mega Man because he's made from Mega? :P

Here is what I want from Rockman...

We need a game, and I mean NOW, that links the two stories of Megaman/Rockman with Megaman X/Rockman X. I'd like a true Megaman 9. Something where in the end Wily infact kills Rockman and because of this Light has to activate X. I thought that Megaman 8 was done so incredbily well, I'd love to see it in that style with the return of DUO and maybe a larger part in the story for Protoman.

Unfortunately thanks to different writers and localization teams, the Rockman/Megaman/X storylines are full of almost as many holes as Metal Gear Solid... I wish they could clean that shit up.

I mentioned this in the Happy BirthDay Dreamcast thread - but ALL megaman fans should check out the Dreamcast homebrew game "Megaman - War of the Past." It's great fun.

Which reminds me, in the MM Anniversary Collection when you unlock the "Anime" episode....corniest line Dr. Light says "No! Don't take Rock and Roll! What would Dr. Wily want with Rock and Roll??" *MSt3000 voice over*...Umm maybe he's tired of country music?

I posted about this back in January or something, but yeah after watching that episode I too thought it was nifty (as I didn't realize it before) that Rock in Rockman was for Rock and Roll. They should just call it ROCKER MAN :D

See, not until someone TOLD me....RECENTLY....that Rock Man was related music...I always associated it with, well, rocks. I still wonder if RUSH the dog is named after the band. Anyways, it was probably changed due to people misunderstanding the name. I like the name Rocker Kid though.

Actually, Bass and Treble are from the Mega Man series (And also Battle Network), not X.

I do like Rockman a lot better than Mega Man, but Mega Man is still cool. Like someone else said, his name really is Rock, Mega Man is just his name when he's kickin' Robot Master butt.

The problem that I had with MM8 and MM&Bass was that the games just don't feel the same when Megaman isn't "square-shaped." If you don't know what I mean... it's hard to explain. But MM8+9 were also a bit harder than the other ones which took away from the fun for me.

you have rock(ish) music in the back ground, in MM 3 everytime protman showed up there was that little whistle sound, theres bass and treble and roll, it all makes sense when its called rockman
And as everyone knows but hasn't mentioned yet, Protman's original name is "Blues."

Yeah call me slow.. but only now do I see how the names Bass & Treble make sense.. and of course "Roll" isn't that the name of some character as well?

And now.. all of a sudden, naming the bosses after Guns and Roses puns in X5 makes a lot more sense as well! LOL

Roll is Mega Man's sister.

And Querjek, you think Mega Man 8/9 are harder? Personally, I think 8 is quite easy. Mega Man and Bass is kind of hard, but not as hard as the older games, like Mega Man 1-6. Personally, I think the newer the Mega Man games, the easier they are. Mega Man X7, the latest game, I believe, was probably the easiest Mega Man/X game I've ever played.

I used to be able to blow through the NES mm games with ease when I was younger. I can hardly make it though 4,5 or 6 now. I thought that 8 was pretty easy, but still provided a signifigant challenge and I loved the music, and generally its entire execution. Rockman & Forte (Bass) was much harder on the SFC than the GBA version, which sucks for many reasons but the biggest one being that they fucked up the size ratios. Megaman is still the same size, but the screen size is smaller, so you dont see nearly as much of the playing field. That one was a bit tricky though. Still never played through MM7, or X2, X3. I loved X4 & X5, but never had a chance to play though X6 and X7 yet. I own them all and its torture not having the time...

It would be nice if they finally linked the two series though.

Cant wait for COmmand Mission!!!

Rockman is music related. If you look at it from the Japanese person's perspective, and know your basic musical terms, it makes alot of sense. Here's the lingo.

Megaman = Rock
Roll = Roll
Rush = music related, but it's a double edged sword for this one.
Protoman = Blues, as in B.B. King blues
Bass = Forte, loudest level of music, or a type of piano
Treble = Gospel, more likely referring to Gospel music. changed to treble to not be religiously offensive
Beat
Eddie = dont' know about this one, maybe reference to a band leader who's name was Eddie.
