View Full Version : What "sub-collections" are you working on ?

I remember reading somewhere (probably here on DP) that its easier to collect if you aim for some smaller goals rather flat out buy everything that moves, e.g all the Tengen games for nes, screenshot style for nes, etc.
So what (if any) "sub-collections" are your working on, or have completed ?
Personally, in light of the recent Truxton thread and my recent purchase of Hellfire ive been thinking of trying to get all the Toaplan games. I also only need Thunderforce III to have all 3 G/MD thunderforce games, but its so goddam hard to find here (stupid US only release). :(
I also wouldnt mind having all the cardboard box accolade games, even if they are crap..

A complete collection of Amiga games is pretty much impossible with way over 4000 titles, but I'm trying to get all Psygnosis and Thalion games as a start :)
Oh, and I'm also trying to get all Megadrive games that were ported from the Amiga ^^

I'm collecting Genesis Arcade style games (Games I can play for 20 minutes).
So far I have Double Dragon, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 2,
Ghouls & Ghosts, Aladdin, Lion King, Columns.
I don't have to play 30 hours to beat them.

For a while I was collecting all of the original NES games that used the ORIGINAL font for the game name on the spine side of the cart, also using the same style art template for the picture side of the cart, if you know what I mean. I didnt get all of them but I got the ones worth caring about.

All Treasure games from all regions - still some variants to go.
All Treasure-related games - lots to go.
Early small/blackbox games for PAL NES - lots to go
Konami "silverbox" games for NES - couple of games and lots of boxes/manuals to go.

I'm trying to get a complete Magnavox Odyssey collection. Assuming nothing happens to the UPS trucks over the next few days I should reach my goal by next Wednesday. Yay! I didn't think I was ever going to find Basketball or Brain Wave.
As I build up my Atari 2600 collection, I use different manufacturers as milestones. These are the ones I've completed so far:
Absolute
Activision (completed most recently when I got Rampage from legeek)
CBS
Epyx
M Network
Milton Bradley
Mythicon
Sears (exclusives only)
TNT Games (all one of them!)
US Games/Vidtec
I'm working on a few that I am really close on:
Apollo (need Guardian and Wabbit)
Data Age (need Frankenstein's Monster)
Froggo (need Task Force)
Imagic (need Subterranea)
Sega (need Tapper and Up 'n Down)
Starpath (need Survival Island)
Telesys (need Ram It)
Zimag (need Cosmic Corridor)
Ninja Blacksox

I'm pretty close to a complete Ranma 1/2 games collection. I'm getting three complete GB games from Japan, and I have the Janken Puzzle Battle in, along with one of the JP only SFC fighting games complete. So that leaves me:
2 JP SFC Ranmas, the US SNES Ranma, the three TG-16 Ranmas, the PSX Ranma, and the CD32 Ranma.

NES Mega Man titles (need some boxes and a manual or 2)
Me too, although I'm not pursuing them that actively. Like you, I'm down to needing a few boxes and manuals (and DW maps).
One of my big "sub-collection" goals when I first started collecting was to reacquire every game myself or my friends ever had growing up. I think I'm about 2 NES games short of that. I believe Slalom and Clu-Clu Land are all I need... strange that I have 400+ NES games, and haven't picked those up yet.
Edited to add: NES Ninja Kid! I still need that one too. It was the third NES game I ever played (SMB and Rush'n Attack were #'s 1 and 2.)

Well thats not so much a set as it is a special promotional gimmie. There were less than 50 made given out to execs and such who worked the game, and the guy who made them (which im thinking is zach at the moment) said that not even the play testers who did lots of work got them. You had to do insane amounts of stuff to even try to get one. One was given out to the guy who won the contest at E3 that year, and his immedately went to eBay. the guns and the memory card are just gold painted, the Briefcase is whats the big deal item, with the Elemental GB embossed on the case.
I dont think that we can necessarily even know that most of these special kinds of thank you's even exist, when some stuff is made in weird limited quantities of 3 or 10 and given to the president of some game company, knowing that it will almost never even see the collectors light of day. But thats not saying that i wouldnt kill to get one. ;)

Unlicensed domestic SNES games. And since Super 3D Noah's Ark was the only one, I just need to find that and I'll be set. LOL
Can't think of anything else at the moment. My last goal was to reach 100 SNES games and I just accomplished that. I guess my current goal would be to get some more games for my N64 library. Nothing specific, just whatever decent non-sports games I can find for under 5 bucks. I'll probably focus on getting some more GB/GBC/GBA games as well, since I only have 9 right now.

Once I accually get a master system, I'm going to start collecting all the Space Harrier games / ports. Also if 32x counts as a sub that's on my list, if it doesn't then how about the 5 32x-CD games?
I'd consider going for a complete Godzilla set as well someday...
But hey, I got a red, blue, yellow, and green VMU! Now I just need a red and yellow controller and I'll have a bitchin Power Stone 2 setup.

It actually just occurred to me a couple days ago that I've got all but three released Jaguar CD titles. It never occurred to me that there were so few in the first place so I've got this set as a sub-goal right now. Normally I don't go for this kind of thing but we're talking less than 15 titles, plus I really like Jag CD so I might as well.
A complete U.S. Virtual Boy collection would be nice, too, but titles are virtually (pun intended) impossible to find in the wild in my neck of the woods and I'm not attached to this system enough to pursue it on eHell.

Im starting at rarest GB and moving backwards, my thinking is that, GB games are still common right now, so the rarer ones will become more rare as time progresses and are thus better find now. The commons wil be around for quite a while still, so why not?
R5's im at 6/15 and R6's im at 1/9(mostly cause no one will sell me the Sachen games at a reasonable price).
Total i got ~74/600+ so I don't exclusively work on 5 and 6 I buy 3/4 occasionally too.

No, I think this is brilliant. It gives you a small set with which to be familiar so when you go out hunting you know what things are worth and how much to be paying for them. It allows you to acquire things slowly enough that you can play them with some satisfaction before the next acquisition. It allows you to acquire them in an order similar or at least close to the progression in which they were released, so you'll be able to appreciate how the games improved as the system matured. Finally, I think it's a bit cheaper to do it this way as you're not jumping at every good offer that comes down the pike unless it pertains to the system and sub-class on which you are focused at that point in time.
Now, what I'm doing is a little nuts. I started with the Odyssey and when I've finished it (sometime next week, fingers crossed) I'm moving on to the Fairchild Channel F, followed by the RCA Sudio II and finally I'll get to the Atari VCS (which I've already completed via Cuttle Cart 2.). My goal is to play everything on as close to the original hardware as possible, at the very least with the original controllers, until I get to the crash and then I'm going back to the dawn of the PC (1977) and going through all of the TRS-80, Apple II and Commodore PET games I can find emulated. Of course, if my video gaming preferences hold out, however, I'll probably be buying those systems eventually, too, I'm just really nervous about any of the software still being usable. Listen to me babble. I'm done now.

Like several of you, I'm working on getting all the black Tengen games for the NES. I know Ineed RBI Baseball 2, then I might be done. Does anyone have a list?
I finished my 32x collection and my Saturn shooter collection, I think I'm done with the Sega CD shooters, I'm not too far from being done with the Saturn Capcom games and the PSone shooters (domestic ONLY dammit) and I'd like a few NGPC games.
My big goal is the entire USA Saturn collection... I have 188 at last count, mostly shitty sports games lefgt. Then there the games that only came out for the Saturn in the UK... I'll never be done with anything.

I got loads of mini-collections going. I'm not one to really go for a complete collection for a particular system, so I go for mini-collections of things I'm really interested in. I'm working on:
Every console/handheld Castlevania game (Dracula X for SNES is the only one left that I particularly want, but I'll get the recent Iga games for completion's sake eventually.)
Every tri-Ace game (Pretty much complete already, but I do need the Director's Cut of SO3 and a few regional variations.)
Every TwinBee game (barely begun on this one)
Every Choaniki game (same as TwinBee)
Every US-released Square SNES game (Complete more or less, but I need Breath of Fire since Square published it.)
Every NES SNK game (Just for the hell of it since my boyfriend is an SNK freak.)
Every cardboard box Sega CD game (Only because I got half of them in one fell swoop, including some harder to find ones like Jaguar XJ220 and
Rise of the Dragon, so I may as well complete the mini-collection someday.)
And my distant dream... having every US-released N64 game (and if that goal is ever accomplished, I'd like to have every Japan-only N64 game too). I can't claim to be very close, though. :/ I only have 55 unique games at the moment (68 games counting duplicates). I am proud to say that I have most of the "must-have" games for the system, however, and many cool obscure titles too. :)

Still working on my PSOne Working Designs collection. Ive now got a lead on my final missing disc. The hope is to get the seller to sell his personal copy. If not i'll at least have a pic of it.
Another side collection is those videogame lanyards. Ive got a whole mess of them. I love em. Achika has been very nice in getting many for me as well :D

9 or so PSX long boxes to go...possibly less as I have a lump of ebay auctions coming in which include long box variants :eek 2:
Currently searching out Non GH jewel case versions of said long boxes (if you have a Mortal Kombat 3 JC version, you PM *now*).
Also tracking / researching Eidos GH variants (demos...ugh!) and Fighter's Edge stuff.
I'll also be tackling the Working Designs stuff as soon as papastu finishes up.
And to think, I could do worse....I coudl collect atari....

Hehe,
Jason Ill help you get the WD stuff done. Once you get Eidos down, i'll go after those. Fighters edge is just going to be an easy experiment for the both of us considering the evilness of the Eidos and the WD stuff.
