1. The Master System was more popular in Europe than the US. Hence, more European games.
2. I think so, but I haven't tried myself.

The SMS got crushed in the USA. Several reasons for that -- Nintendo's policies, a lot of more games, and good ones, for the NES, poor decisions by Sega, poor marketing, and not coming out first are the main ones.
I'm not totally sure, but European games should work on a US system but you'll need a PAL TV.

I play several European games on my U.S. Master System with no problems. I also am using an NTSC TV (of course) and there are still no problems with the games. I wouldn't be surprised if a few Euro games give you problems on an NTSC TV, but I haven't run across any yet.

U.S. and European Master System games are interchangeable with each others system. Though the Japanese Master System games arent compatible with a U.S. or Euro MS. You can also mod your Master System to play in Mark III mode, check out the following link.

There's a tiny handful that aren't 100% compatible (Codemasters games, I think and possible a couple of others), though some of these few are OK on a SMS2. The remaining 98% of European games will happily play in the US. Any 8-meg Brazilian games will also have trouble on a SMS1, I believe.

Hang On/Safari Hunt was only released in the US.
SlapShot has a blue label in the US, red label in Europe.
The others could be either. It's fairly easy to find some Euro games in Canada, since it was easier to import them than print up English/French Canadian manuals & boxes (although there are 1 or 2 Canadian boxes for early-ish games)

There's also a Canadian variation of Hang On/Safari Hunt that says Irwin Electronics on the box and manual.
But yeah, generally, if the box and manual are english only, it's US, and if it's multilingual, it's European. But of course, there are a few minor exeptions to this rule, such as some South American, Aussie and German stuff, but it's usually easy to tell where those one's came from.
Also, Euro carts usually have security screws, as oposed to the US Phillips type screws.

I'm not sure if the actual carts are different, some have blue lables on them, but I've found that most of the UK cases have a little red thing in the upper left corner that indicates genre

Besides the Codemasters titles, the only other game that I can think of that isn't compatible with a US SMS is "New Zealand Story". Reliable sources tell me, however, that it will play fine on a US Genesis Power Base Converter.

All of my SMS game are in the euro design which leads me to believe in Canada we only got these "international editions" instead of US ones. In Canada we also got some games not released in the US like Dynamite Dux

That's not true, HO/SH was also released in Canada. It was distributed by Irwin electronics and says so on the box.

Thanks for bumping a 2-year old topic to tell me that. What I was implying is that it wasn't released in Europe.

Yeah I know, that was completely unnecessary especially because someone had already corrected you in the thread but I missed it. I don't know how many people search the archives for information but if someone did run across it I wouldn't want them to be misinformed. That's the only reason why I replied.

All of the games from Europe work on the USA SMS. It doesn't have region lock out. I have over 200 PAL games and none have given me any problem that I can remember. Most of the games are really just stripped down version of the sega genesis games that came out in the USA. The Tec Toy brazil games also work without an adaptor. Try those since they are some original games involved plus some obvious hacks. The quality is great since they were licensed by Sega to make these games

I played the American carts Aerial Assault and Galaxy Force in my Brazilian Master System.
His function is normal.
Nothing wrong with consoles and carts with different nacionalities.
But i didnīt played the European Master System carts in my life.

The games Hang On / Safari Hunt are built in with the Master System in period of his Brazilian release in 1989.
But in 1991, Hang On and Safari Hunt are replaced for Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Master System is renamed for Master System II and include one joystick only.

All of the games from Europe work on the USA SMS.
Do you have any Codemasters games? I also believe that Pitfighter had to be corrected before being released in Brazil, whose machines behave like NTSC systems.
