In honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day on Sunday, Sept. 19, I'm throwing out this question:

"What's you favorite pirate-based videogame?"

I've got a special place in my heart for two of 'em. For serious gameplay, I loved Pirates! for the C64 (and later NES and Sega Genesis). Long before the open-ended gameplay of GTA III, Pirates! allowed you to sail the entire Carribean. You could ally with some countries and work as a privateer, or you could turn your back on them all and bloodthristily attack with impunity. Ransack and take over port cities! Search for treasure! Amasss gold! Marry the governor's daughter! Or, when your luck runs out, get thrown into jail and die of old age. Pirates! allowed you to really live in the days of yore!

And then, on the funny side, nothing beats the insanity of the Monkey Island series, with kudos to Secret of MI - the first game of the series. rthe bizarrely-named Guybrush Threepwood arrives on Melee (C)(TM) Island in hopes of becoming a pirate. But it's not easy with no skills, no boat, and no crew. In the funniest game I've ever played, you must guide Guybrush on his way to buccaneer-dom. Learn what's the most important thing about swordfighting! (insults) Discover the secrets of the haunted caverns! And prepare to see "the 2nd largest monkey head" you've ever seen!

Ok, now it's YOUR turn! Let's hear some recommendations!

Well, the only pirate game I ever got into was Puzzle Pirates (www.puzzlepirates.com), what was once a FREE MMORPG was a great fun game that ran very well on 56k. Play online "puzzle" games as swordfights, and ship duties. Much fun, although it isn't free anymore, it's still a good thing to look into.

I lost interest when they decided to switch over from free to pay, not because I had to pay, but they wiped out everyones inventories and we all had to start from scratch. Meh, no point IMO.

ARRRR! I knew it was coming up but wasn't sure when it was. Pirates! for the Genesis will be in order. Pillaging and plundering will be bountiful.

The only one that came to mind for me was Skies of Arcadia. I really need to finish that.

Hmm... Interesting question! How about my 100000000 in 1 cart? That's my favorite pirate game! Haha just joking...

These don't all focus entirely on pirates, but these games contain the best pirate stuff imo.

La Pucelle Tactics: Any game with a pirate captain leading a bunch of cute kittens into battle, and you know you have a winner. Best pirate quote ever from Homard in this game too >>> "Behold our savage Kitty and Crossbones Flag, and despair!!"

Skies of Arcadia: Air pirates? RPGs? I'm sold! At first glance it looks mediocre, but it's a great RPG.

... That's all I can think of right now.

I am now officially sad that I haven't had the chance to play any game in the two most mentioned series in this thread :(

My very distant closest experiences are the ghost/pirate (style) ship levels in Castlevania III and Dracula X: Rondo.

Big Green Mechanic: ARR
Death: ?
Big Green Mechanic: Avast! Yonder buggar hit our ship's engine with a dove until it exploded!
Death: SON OF A...

That time of the year again already? :)
It's gotta be Monkey Island in the pirate stakes. With an honourable mention for Cutthroat Island on the Megadrive.

Pirates! Gold for the Genesis would have to be my favorite game on the matter. That game had me hooked for a while, and it's as realistic as one can possibly get. I can't tell you how many times I cackled gleefully as I raided enemy forts and stole all their gold. Pillaging is awesome, that is the truth. I'll peg Atari's Skull and Crossbones as a close second. While a bit choppy in animation, it's a beat-em-up at heart, and I cannot resist any pirate game that pits you against ninjas. Come on, who can pass that up? :D

Too bad there aren't more pirate-themed games... bit off-topic here, but there aren't too many spaghetti western style games either. A modern-day remake of Pirates! would be the greatest... oh, the possibilities with out sacred modern technology. *giggles and has thoughts of capturing galley wenches*

Pirates! for the NES is my favorite game of all time, so I guess it also holds the distinction of being my favorite pirate game as well. I've played several different versions (on an old Mac, Pirates Gold! for both the Genesis and PC), and while I love them all, the NES version gets the nod from me. I think its mostly due to the play control during swordfights; the NES version, at least to me, has the clear advantage in this category, making it more fun to play.

I have Tropico 2: Pirates Cove, but I haven't actually got around to play it yet. Looks like great fun though.

I also have Sea Dogs for the PC and Pirates of the Caribbean for Xbox. Both look like fantastic games with an epic scope, but I just haven't had the time to get into them yet. I've messed around with POTC for a couple of hours, it is fun but there are a lot of bugs. I could see myself putting in a lot of hours into that game once I really get going, but there is a lot to figure out before you can really start to get into the quest. Beautiful graphics, definitely the closest you'll ever get to sailing around the Caribbean during the days of piracy.

Currently, I'm waiting for Sid Meier's new version of Pirates! to release later this year.....

Well, I'm working on Skies of Arcadia right now. I still wanna play some One Piece games. I wonder if they are as good as the anime...

Ultima Online has, for the last seven years, been my favorite pirate game. Yes, it's not just a standard D&D fantasy MMORPG, it has many aspects to it and ship combat and piracy are a part of it.

I've gotten hundreds of kills at sea, and captured about a hundred ships.

Sea Dogs was also very good, and I'm looking forward to Pirates of the Burning Sea next year (hopefully).

I loved Skull & Crossbones in the arcade, but the NES "port" is crap.

Skull & Crossbones (arcade) is my #1 pick, followed closely by what you may consider an unusual #2 - Captain Silver (either arcade or SMS). Now THERE'S a pirate-themed game you never hear about anymore. I've heard stories about the Famicom version of CS, but I have yet to play it.

I'm sure older gamers will say Pirates! or Monkey Island which is just funny as hell AND a Sega CD game.

but i'm going with Seven Cities of Gold.. not a true pirate game but you do go in and steal from the natives and rape the new land of the Americas.

Curse of Monkey Island rocked. It had all the humor you'd expect from the series, and awesome cartoony graphics that just made it all that much more comedic. Plus it had the pirate song!

A pirate I was meant to be, trim the sails and roam the seas!

There's a pirate ship and some pirates in Fantasy (http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/fantasy.html), so I'll nominate that one.

Now, that said...where's the love for Pirate Ship Higemaru (http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/2004/h.htm)?

D'OH!!! :embarrassed:

Higemaru Makaijima (the Famicom sequel to PSH) was pretty good too, although near impossible if you can't read Japanese.

The only pirate-themed game I've played is the PS2 version of Escape From Monkey Island, so that would be it. I'm not really a PC gamer so I haven't played the other ones.

Marvelous! :) One of the best Nintendo-made games that nobody knows or cares about. I don't know how it slipped under the radar. Even in Japan nobody seems to know about it, but maybe because it was a fairly late Super Famicom title (that didn't hurt Fire Emblem any, though...). Beautiful whimsical graphics, great music, really innovative unusual gameplay, unique varied themes with lots of humor and weirdness... it's freakin' got EVERYTHING. o_o And MONKEYS! You know you love monkeys! Pirates and monkeys! O_O You can even play janken with monkeys! And do matchmaking for lovesick penguins! *explodes with love for Marvelous*

Damn... I want to play through it again now... :P
