Ok you have your pick. Air Raid for the Atari 2600 or the finest NWC Championship cart. Cost is not a factor.

Whats it going to be?

Air Raid

I have a greater interest in Atari based stuff and I'm sure it's quite a bit more rare than the nwc, even gold version.

Easy.

I'd take the "NWC 90" cart in a heartbeat.

Sorry, but I don't care much for Atari. I respect it, but my heart belongs to the NES.

Atari stuff = Trade bait.

Great question.

On the one hand, you have the kinda crappy and unknown (outside of collecting circles) Men-a-Vision Air Raid, arguably the hardest to find US-produced Atari 2600 game.

On the other, you've got the fabled Nintendo World Championship cart, known to exist in limited quantity and a FUN game to play.

I'd have to go with the NWC cart mainly because it would be a better conversation piece. It has an interesting story behind it, we could plug it in and enjoy it, and it's only going to go up in value. I know the blank stares I'd get if I showed Air Raid to most gamers, either in physical form or on the screen.

So yeah, NWC for me.

Joe couldn't have said it better..

if I told someone I spent 3000$ on air raid.. I'd get the 10 second look, followed by a laugh...

If I told the same person the story behind the gold NWC.. I'd get oooh's and aahh's..

No doubt about it.. NWC has a story behind it.. and it's this story that's going to help keep its price. 75 years from now, when the last atari & NES fan boy is in the ground which cart do you think will still make people's heads turn??

I voted for the NWC.

I'm going to surprise everyone and say Air Raid.
And I will surprise a few people by saying NWC.

I pick NWC because (1) what DP said and (2) Air Raid is only going to go down in value when everyone realizes that it's just another Brazilian pirate cart.

I'd take the NWC because I'm a bigger fan of the NES than the atari. Since I started collecting 3 years ago, my main system to collect for has always been the NES. It's been pretty rough this last year with the newbie NES collector influx...but i'm making it.

So give me the NWC over Air Raid anyday!

So anyone wanna sell me an NWC? :D

don't get me wrong, 2600 rocks, but i would rather have nwc just because i have played the rom of it, and it is actually pretty addicting (i guess i don't know the little trick the people did on mario, but i need to find out). don't get me wrong, i played this in rom form on my dc, i don't own it

The NWC cart has a pre-established, known & verified history. It's a collectable with a story. It's playable, and (supposedly) fun. I've never had the opportunity to evaluate it's fun-ness myself.

Air Raid is... some incredibly rare blue cart of dubious origin. Anybody actually know where the Menavision company was located? It's not very enjoyable, either. Fun-factor obviously doesn't matter to 2600 completists, but it's still a factor for some.

As far as total value, I'd pick the NWC cart any day.

I would pick Air-Raid since it is one of the 3 2600 carts that I need. However, if Air Raid is really a Brazilian cart as suspected, then I wouldn't pay $5 for it.

Space Jockey is nothing like Air Raid.

Here is an old thread on AtariAge which talks about using CloneSpy to compare the Space Jockey and Air Raid binaries:

http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=34495&highlight=air+raid+hack+space+jockey

Down at the bottom, Thomas explains the results. Air Raid contains 56% of the Space Jockey code.

Another active thread is discussing the current Air Raid auction on ebay:

http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=57325

I agree that comparing a side scroller to a vertical scroller seems like a significant hack. But owing 56% of its code to Space Jockey is way more than coincidence.

Has anyone here ever seen the Air Raid box? The story from Pitfall Harry said that the supposed owner has disappeared from the collecting scene. I vaguely recall an old version of the DP Guide had a story that said one of the DP staff swore they had seen the box for Air Raid.

As a side note, who here owns a copy of Air Raid? Only one person on AtariAge has one. Plus there were two others sold on ebay in the late 90s...one to "jeffgamer".

But I picked NWC. I think it will go down as the THE holy grail of game collecting.

Air raid just went for over $3000 on ebay last week. I wonder how much a gold nwc cart would go for right now?
