Video Cards?

I hope I'm putting this in the right forum..

I'm getting more into PC gaming and it's becoming very obvious, very fast my old video card just won't cut the mustard anymore..

I'm looking for some of you recommendations that fit this range.

NVidia (This is a must(
No more than 200 dollars (I'm out of a job for now.)
And is AGP.

Anyting else is completely optional. :)

If there's allready a thread like this feel free to point me to it and lock this one.

Haven't looked at Nvidia cards sense I owned a GF4ti4200..

All I can say is the Radeon 9800 Pro is the best card I've ever used and I got it for 199.99 almost a year ago.

I hear that Nvidia has a good $200 card but I don't suggest items I have not used.

I know ATI makes some damn fine cards but I mainly use Linux (Let's not get into the whole OS war.)

And right now ATI users get about 1/3rd the performance in Linux than they do in Windows.
Whereas NVidia owners get about on par results from NVidia's drivers.

Whiie I -do- have WindowsXP Pro on here I don't like rebooting just to play a game, ya know?

I've always liked ATI cards and the 9800 pro is a damn fine choice. But if you don't want to spend $200.00 the 128mb 9200 pro goes for about $120.00-150.00. It all depends on what your playing though, 128 is fine for most games, but if you're going to get into the new FPS's I'd go with a 256 card from either ATI, or geForce Ultra 6800 I hear is pretty good. Also if you got the cash ramp up your system RAM and HDD speeds as well, that will help a good deal.

This card should get you by for awhile, and it's just under $200. I'm looking at buying one myself at some point.

5900xt perhaps. I dont think any of the new gen cards can be had to $200 and the xt was always decent value. And it will run linux Wolf: ET nicely ;)

You could probably save some more $ and go for some variant of the 5700, which is also a fine card. Just curious, what was your old card anyway ?

I'm not an expert on the subject, but my understanding is that you'll have to spend at least $200 to get anything worthwhile. Any video cards that are cheaper are just hand-me-downs. It all depends on what you want to do: play older games, play newer games like Doom 3, video editing, yada yada.

The latest generation of graphics cards have been released recently, so I'd expect prices to come down. But, again, $200 is the minimum.
