View Full Version : Preferred 3rd-Party Peripherals
What are some of your favorite 3rd-party controllers? I'm not just talking ones you like (though I'd like to hear about those too), but those your prefer to the system's official controllers.
For me, it has to be the Dream Pad for the Dreamcast. Imagine the standard Dreamcast controller but with rubber grips on the sides and the analog stick. The only coveat is that the rubber D-pad is askew making it hard to do smooth moves ala Street Fighter.
Rubber on things you need to grip onto == good, rubber on things you need to slide across == bad.

The PS2 Logitech wireless controller.
IMO the best controller I've ever owned. It's not bulky like the Gamecube Wavebird and it feels solid and slightly better shaped than the regular Dual Shock.

I am just going to go by company
Mad Catz: I have never used something crappy from madcatz
Naki: they made a bunch of old school peripherals, I am pretty sure they still are making them for new school, but can't confirm it.
Hip Gear: I just noticed products from this company, while they are not near as good as naki or mad catz, they are still pretty descent

I was always fond of the Piranha Pad by Interact for the Playstation. Good solid controller. It's what I used before I got an analog/dual shock controller (since it had a much thicker grip than the standard controller).

I try to stay away for anything made by Performance. If I see a Dreamcast with those controllers near it, the Dreamcast's controller ports are blown.

The ONLY, and I mean ONLY, 3rd party thing I have like, well actually i love using it, it the Agetec (I think) Dreamcast Gun. The thing works great!
Probably the only reason I even bought that was because SEGA never actually released there own in the U.S.

So is my friend. I myself HATE anything Pelican makes. I ALWAYS just stick with the First Party things when gaming. (Just found from expierence everything works better)

Mad Catz: I have never used something crappy from madcatzFunny. I've never had anything from them that DIDN'T fall apart. Mad Catz is shit in my book. EB swears by them... 'nuff said.

I have a Madcatz microcon controller for GameCube and it SUX!
It's half the size of a regular GameCube controller and the buttons get stuck!

Mad Catz is about 50/50 from my experience with them. The true criminal in the realm of console (and PC) peripherals was Interact (who were put out of their misery early in the current era).
That said:
Mad Catz MicroCON (ps2): a mighty comfortable controller whose only sore spot is the iffy Dpad. Other than that, good solid controller.
Dream Pad (DC): Mad Catz' alternative to the DC pad. Both are good, but this one is by far the most comfortable of the DC 3rd party pads.
Also, pretty much anything by Logitech is guaranteed quality. I have the first generation wireless controller for ps2 and despite it's at-first offsetting largeness, it's quite confortable and you almost grow to prefer it over the first-party Dual Shock 2.

Agreed! I've used a few different controllers from them and they all sucked (didn't work, buttons stick, fell apart). The only thing from them that I do like is their Force Pak (rumble pack) for N64.
