View Full Version : DP Gamer's Wire Service

Here's the latest thing that I want to pimp. Actually, the DP Wire Service has been around since 1998 and has over 1000 subscribers, but I have not used it to its fullest potential. It's just your ordinary mailing list but I've been PAYING Microsoft for this (it's via their List Builder bCentral service) for two years now. I need to get more use out of it.
Two things.
1. Sign up (http://www.digitpress.com/mailform.htm).
2. How would you like to see this used?
As of now, the mailing list has only been used to promote major events, like big contests, new book releases, etc. It could be used to send out various site updates, news from #vbender or the forums, or really anything else. Using the list more would be to enhance our mailings, not turn them into spam, so keep that in mind with your suggestions - this should be stuff you'd be really interested in receiving email from us about.
Ideas?
[EDIT: Gonna sticky this for a few days so I don't forget to pull in a few people for this project. Thanks again for the feedback!]

How about upcoming release dates within the next 14 days? That would be rather handy indeed, though a pain in the ass to keep updated. Heh.

I'd like to be informed:
...when new feature articles appear on the main page.
...about scheduled vbender chats.
...the month's gaming headlines.
...whenever someone says something nice about me.

Since this is a retrogaming site, if we're going to do releases in the email, I'd really like to see a homebrew release date list. That would be tremendously useful for me.

it wouldn't be that bad to do release dates.
all you do is have a team of peeps (i guarentee you could get a team, hell, i would join it if you needed), have them fill it out for each month, and every week (since it is already filled out), just send out that week and the week after it

I agree, when things are updated, that would be great. And maybe a seasonal homebrew release schedule or something too, that would be cool.

Release dates sound cool. Homebrew release dates would be sweet as well. Also, maybe what is going on in the communnity. Any interviews with older game makers on other sites, Links to outside articles about Videogames, What current meets/gatherings are coming up. (That would be very helpfull)
And if there be any sweetness updates to DP.

Great feedback, thanks!
Follow-up questions:
1. Who's going to "collect" new release schedules?
2. Who's going to "collect' upcoming homebrew schedules?
3. Who's going to be our mailing list newsletter editor? :)

actually, if you want release dates, #vbender is already set up for it... just hop in the channel and type "!games xbox" or "!games ps2" or whatever, it'll list all available games being released in the next 4 weeks i believe. this could probably be easily incorporated into the email.

I'm always amazed by what's being done in #vbender. I really need to get over there more often. Blarsted workplace firewalls!
Where are the release lists compiled FROM? Might be just as easy to go directly to the source (I'd also like to see the source before settling for it).
@tholly: I'll get back to you - thanks for the offer.

Well, I don't send them very often. It's also possible your spamblocker is halting the transmission. I hear a lot of that.

I keep loose tabs on the homebrew scene... I could pitch in with homebrew release dates if needed.

I got the already in notice too. However I probably entered myself when I became DP active a while back.
So here's my Suggestion. :D
Why not send out a test message using the service to see if the people that are trying to get on the list (who think they ARNT) but appear to be, can actually find out that they are on the list or not.
Otherwise, I totally agree with all the points that Flack said.

My rec: Run it as an RSS feed instead of email. Many of us read frequently updated sites (like weblogs) through an RSS reader, and the required XML is very simple. It would be better than multiple emails/day.
