Okay, I got the game into my PC at 8pm yesterday. I managed to pry myself away from it at 8am today. I am now at work having only slept on the bus.
Fable is crack.
This is a cautionary tale. Don't buy it on a work day.

I was able to stop last night after I got to the school. I played that for a bit - until the old dude asked me if I wanted to begin my training. I said no, saved & then restarted to see how the save system worked.
It took me back to the end of the first chapter. WTF?
I'm playing the Xbox version. So does anyone know how the save system works? Do you have to finish a chapter first & get to where the Xbox automatically saves?

I heard the save feature sucks....I think the review in GMR talks about it...they gave it an 8 out 10. Sucky Save features put the game in the "I'll wait to get a used copy" folder. :D

The save is fine, it tends to save for you at the pivotal points just as you're about to start anything meaty.

I prefer Morrowind-style saving myself (though only with the autosave on load feature turned off ;)
Looks like another feature got cut out! Oh well.

Bahh. This is 2004. I want to quit the game when I want to quit. I hate being tied to an automatic save.

You can also save whenever you'd like but it rolls back whatever progress you've made on whatever quests you are currently engaged. Shit happens.

so is the save feature as crappy as soul reaver. i hated that save. it made me stop playing the game. i got about 3/4 through a level, had to quit, which meant i have to save and quit, but man, it sucked.

OK, I picked up on my save from last night on my lunch break. I played for 45 minutes going through the training. I had to go back to work & saved & quit before the "will" training.
Just to test, I started again & it took me back to my previous save point from last night (end of 1st chapter). Now I have to play through all the training again?
I took the time to do all the side quests & such (like the race & gathering apples), but do I have to do them again for them to "count?" Or can I just breeze through the training and skip that stuff since I've done it once already?
Now I see why SpasticFuctard played 12 hours straight - waiting for a good save point!

I've had no save issue (Xbox version).
On topic a bit, now that I have this game I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Well and truly worth th $28 I paid for the special edition.
I'm looking at taking a mostly will, and neutral-good path, as my friend is playing a pure evil assassin path. I've gotten as far as beating the giant wasp quest.
A question to jaybird....since you're having so many issues with the save, are you using the "world save" feature? Also, "all that training" you said you got through doesn't actually take very long. You should be able to quit every hour or so, and, really, this isn't the sort of game that you should be playing for 15/20 minute stints.

I use the "Hero Save" feature, which saves your stats, but apparently not your progress. You're at the game's mercy for progress saves.
I did the little side quests in the training mode, talked to ALL the people and searched the libraries for books to make sure I didn't miss anything. When you do that, training does take awhile. I figure taking it slow & uncovering everything will some kind of effect later in the game.
When I start back up, do I have to do all that again or can I just simply re-play the training sessions and trust that the game "remembers" what I did previously?
I guess I shouldn't have gotten this game as I really don't have time for hour after hour of gameplay. When you have kids, it's hard to dedicate that amount of continuous play time. I guess I could just leave my Xbox running. :)
I just thought it'd be nice to hit "save" and pick up where I left off without replaying levels.

Why are people saying "Xbox version?" Isn't Xbox the ONLY version? This game hasn't come out on the PC and I don't believe they ever plan on porting it.
Correct?

I'm trying to understand this sequence. What's your point, Jasoco? That calthaer was wrong or that SF buying the game for PC upsets you? You really do seem to get "miffed" by the most trivial of things. When I see this :o icon I actually think of you!
Anyway, after hearing the raves I felt the need to get started with the game last night, much to the chagrin of Mrs. digitalpress who thought she was getting the big-screen TV last night. Yes, I made the offer to sacrifice my game and play Atari 2600 on the smaller 19" TV upstairs instead, but I was crying at the time, also hugging the Xbox console. For some reason she waived her option. :)
So anyway, the game is pretty good but I'm not blown away by it, at least not yet. It's a pretty game and it does seem nicely open-ended. I just haven't seen any innovations in the gameplay yet. I'm sure that will come along, based on the game's premise that you become who you become based on your actions throughout the game.
A question for those of you who are pretty far along - is the childhood and young adulthood stages something you SHOULD spend more time on? You get the option to skip out of them pretty quickly and I did stick with the training sessions, but do you see the results of this in your adulthood or are these levels really just tutorials in disguise?

I guess I'm not far enough along to tell. I tried to do all those "green dot quests" that I could as I went through. But, I just couldn't finish the "Kill the Sparrow" one last night. After killing 5, I wasn't sure if it was possible to complete it.
So far, it looks like doing those quests gives you better weapons (getting A+ on training sessions), gold & food. I also did the foot race one where you race to a location & back in under 50 seconds. I'm not quite sure if that helped anything, but I would think it should've helped improve my speed.
I'm also embarrassed to say that I played 3 Quests last night using the damn stick as my weapon. I finally got the book down & figured out how to change weapons. :embarrassed: It did make me hella efficient with the bow & arrow, since that is infinitely more powerful than the stick.

DP: If you want to skip ahead, don't worry too much about it. The amount of renown and exp. you get for doing the childhood and tennage quests is not that great, and the newer weapons you get will quickly become outdated.

Thanks, that's good to know. I just wasn't sure if somewhere down the road I'm going to find out that I missed picking up an important item during my childhood and that very item is the only way to finish the game. That's the kind of thing that happens to me in these kinds of games.

I was simply POINTING OUT, that the original poster said he got it for the PC. Then Calthaer comes along and basically says there IS no PC version. I'm confused how Calthaer could miss this. Spastic say he got it for PC. Calthaer says it doesn't exist. So I guess Spastic must have some nonexistent PC version.
I mean come on, DP. I'm not a bad guy. And I'm sick of everyone getting mad at me for pointing stuff out. :(

From everything I have seen, there is NO PC version. Well, there is a game called Fable but it was released in '97 and has nothing at all to do with this game. So...
EDIT
I need to hit refresh more often =P
