What's a good PC USB gamepad under 20$? I'm looking for one with a thumbstick and at least 8 buttons. I keep going to fire up an emulator but then realize that my Saitek of two years gave up the ghost last week. It's like I lost a limb or something.

Rest in pieces little Saitek, because I'm not going to bother with putting you back together. The rubber boot under one of the buttons actually burst. Can you imagine that? I played it to death. Best 9 bucks I ever spent- but if I can spend a little more and have it last me longer, all the better.

I love me some thumbstick.

I love the pigs.

Awesome!

So this makes me wonder - is Sega making a statement that emulation isn't so bad if said gaming is done with one of their pads? LOL

I personally like a dual joystick pad for use with console games, in addition to one like this. Though keyboard works just fine fer me.

Check Radio Shack. They have a usb to ps1/2 converter that you can use to allow the use of any Playstation controller on PC. I use that adapter ($5-10) plus a ps2 controller of choice and it works just fine.

Spitting image of a PS2 controller, complete with dual-sticks. The only problems are a seemingly higher rate of failure on the control sticks than similar higher-priced models, and according to one user review from Amazon, the D-pad doesn't accept diagonal input (only the sticks). That could have just been a driver/calibration problem. I haven't picked this up yet myself, but I've been thinking about it for awhile.

I would also recommend this, except I believe Radio Shack stopped selling them a year or two ago. But any good PS2 to USB converter should do the trick quite nicely. I always use a Dual Shock and Radio Shack adapter for long rounds of Mutant Storm. Heh.

The PS to USB convertors are awesome...my buddy's used one for the past couple years, though it finally died on him not too long ago.

Props for the veloxi subject name :P

The next time I buy one I'm going for one of those adapters. I've bought 3 gamepads that "LOOK" like PSX controllers, but none of them have the feel (or weight) of the original.

One I got was generic. Paid like $12 for it at the mall. Then I found a Gravis one that despite everyone else's complains, works really well for me. I then picked up a Microsoft one and I like the feel of it but the d-pad isn't mounted straight, so to move up you have to move up and to the right a little, etc. I looked up a picture on the web and they're all like that so ... basically I have at least two USB gamepads I never use and one that I use but feels cheap. The PSX controller is my favorite of all time; I wish I had known the USB adapters existed for it last year.

The PSX-to-USB adaptor came to mind a few times but it just tacks another 12 bucks to the cost of the gamepad itself. I'm not crazy about the PS2 design either, I like my controllers big ala the Dreamcast.

Also, when I mean thumbstick, I mean on the digital d-pad, not the analog sticks. Saturn pad's looking nice though Butta.

You is to be making the funny jokes with me and laughing yes?

EDIT: Heck, I can't really be that picky, I just want something that'll last a good while, ultimately.

If you're playing lots of NES, you could always pick up a Mad Catz RetroCON ($9.99 at Circuit City) plus a USB-PSX adapter for $20 before taxes. The RetroCON is a pretty decent pad, but looking through the used controllers at Gamestop/EB/locals will probalby net at least ONE controller for the PSX that you find comfortable.

I highly reccomend the PC Magic Box series, usb boxes that can connect ps2, saturn, and DC controllers to your PC. Awesome gear indeed.

Actually, Sega Japan has a pay-to-download ROM service. That's what that pad is from. Don't remember the price of the service, but it wasn;t as cheap as it should be, that's for sure.

I KNEW that title had a ring of familiarity to it. Rock on Starflight!

Belkin Nostromo n45 GamePad. I've been using the older n40 (without the analog sticks) for more than a year now.

Oh, that's right. They sold some games online to US customers in a similar manner, too, with a complete, stand-alone Shinobi 3 program :)

And...the quote's from Starflight? Haven't gotten far enough into the game to see that text, heh. Genesis or PC/Tandy version? Both?

Not the direct quote, but that's how the Veloxi speak, stilted and with the words out of English syntactical order.... kinda like if Yoda was from India. LOL And they always tack on the phrase "grand lovely" whenever they talk about themselves. Can't remember for sure, but I believe one of the Binary Systems guys was a linguistics major, so all the alien dialog is very internally consistent.

Pretty sure this would be the same in both the PC and Genny versions...
