Instead of using a big, awkward, expensive, uncommon 8PDT switch to flip-flop D0-7, has anybody tried using a pair of Quad 2-input multiplexers?

Seems like you could just wire them up to the data lines, once forwards (D0-7) on source A inputs, and once backwards (D7-0) on source B inputs & use a SPDT switch to toggle the Select lines between high & low, switching the outputs between normal/reverse.

Does that even make sense?

I'm just kinda getting into digital electronics, so please tell me why this wouldn't work (if it doesn't). If it's never been tried... if I can find another bare TG16 console I just might give it a shot.

I've seen this in a mod that stopped working. 4 IC's in two pairs on top of eachother.

It seemed cool, but I wouldn't call it neater, and it had ceased to switch modes, for non obvious reasons (switch was fine).

Thinking out this IC stuff makes my head hurt. If you sort out a way to do it, I'd love to read about the hows and whys.

Sounds like a more complex version of the saturn switchless region mod.

Did you happen to note the IC part numbers?

This is a bit more complex off the bat, but I would think having the luxury of switch type / placement would make up for it.

I've forgotten, sorry. Should've written it down. The IC's were all wired up, but it was trapped in US mode. No shorts. No loose wires.

It just stopped being able to swap the connections.
