I remember awhile ago in one of my sonic comics there was an Ad for a sonic fighters game on saturn. It only had about 7 or 8 playable characters and they were rendered in 3d like virtua fighter.
I was wondering, what ever happened to this game? Was it even released in japan?

Never was, was only an Arcade game I believe. Only time we got near it, was in Fighter's Mega Mix with two characters from that game (Bean and Bark)

Far as I've ever known it's arcade-only, called either Sonic The Fighters or Sonic Championship (i would say based on region but I'm not 100% sure it ever even got out of Japan). To my knowledge it's not a saturn game, but it would be nice if someone could prove me wrong.

Saturn version is awesome, it's the only chance you'll get to have the car from Daytona square off against the girl from Virtua Cop.

Janet rocks, thank god for that gun, and the hidden AM2 Palm Tree and the weird "Meat" character....Hornet from Dayonta rocked because of "RORRRINN STARRT!" BGM
I liked the use of the VF Kids in the game, and the real "Akira" aka (Saban with the sword) Which was shown on many Arcade Marquees of the original cabinet.

Not to digress, but I think it's actually "Rolling Start" (from the rolling start's that Daytona U.S.A. featured)
I played the Sonic fighting game at Sega World in London. Wasn't great. If you took away the license I wouldnt have cared to play it all. I wouldn't mind if Sega brought out a Model 2 collection with Sonic Fighters on it though! Come on Sega! PLease!!!!!

It's really unfortunate that the Saturn never gave us the taste of Sonic that we needed in the 32 bit era. I was very excited about Sonic Fighters & Sonic Xtreme - when I heard they were both cancelled, well I was pretty ticked off for a while - probably hadn't been that ticked off since I had found out that NEC was discontinuing the TG-16/DUO and NOT bringing over Street Figher II CE (which would have totally prlonged that system's life IMO).
The only real taste of a nice 3D looking sonic was in the "Sonic World" thing that was a part of the Japanese release of Sonic Jam (I never played the US Sonic Jam, so I dont know if it's included there) Sonic world was neat though. Out of curiosity - what was the Game.com version fo Sonic Jam like? Poor Tiger and their poor handhelds LOL

And yeah, there is emulation available for this game, although I think it requires some decent gear to get any real frames.

This game is actually pretty good, for a sonic fighting game that is. Obviously it isn't as diverse as VF4 or SC2, but it is a pretty good taste of sonic goodness. In case anyone here lives in Las Vegas or is planning to go there, there is a cabinent in Gameworks on the Strip.

I'm pretty positive that the Sonic Jam on the Game.com was just like the normal previous Sonic games on Genesis. It had a compliation of levels from various Sonic games, I believe. Unfortunately, I heard the game was still horrible.
Which makes me sad.
