I own the "original" (although I'm sorta mad as it's the 3rd copy of it that I have owned and it is version 1.1 instead of 1.0). I may buy the new one too, but as of now, I'm a tad short of funds.

I just found PSO Ep1-2plus a few days ago and picked it up. Ive also got the original release. I was in another monthly at the time when I got PSO (EQ) so I didnt start that one, then got FF XI started so I wont do this one.

I'm going to pass.

I bought both Dreamcast versions of 1 and the original I & II. I didn't find II to be that big of upgrade, and I won't be paying another cent just for a "few" more classes and a "few" more levels. Especially after playing FFXI and getting into that, I realize how limited PSO is.

Can someone point out to me whats the difference between this "plus" version on the gamecube and the one I have on the Xbox?

From IGN:

Upgraded special edition to the original Phantasy Star Online for GameCube features more items, off-line quests and GBA downloads, and a five-stage challenge mode. Phantasy Star Online Episodes I & II Plus features the first two online-ready GameCube titles in their entirity, as well as additional expansions like new quests, weapons, items, and immediately unlocked mini-games that were previously only available online (or not at all). For those that haven't purchased one of the elusive online adapters (either broadband or modem), players can also explore the expansive worlds in the game on their own in an offline single-player mode. As before, the online mode supports cooperative play with up to three friends. Communication is handled via an on-screen text input parser or with a GameCube keyboard peripheral.

Maybe someday.

I get the same feeling as everybody else here. Has Sega lost touch with what Phantasy Star is all about (or MMOs, for that matter)?

Will you be able to transfer characters from the original GCN game? If so, I'll probably get it, but not play it online.

They're both playable on the same servers...so...you tell me.

(If Sega didn't allow characters to be moved from one to the other, Sega would officially be 100% clueless.)

Is Phantasy Star any good? I have never played ANY of the games in the series. 20 bucks for Phatasy Star 1 & 2 sounds okay if they are decent games - is this something that I should add to my long queue of games or not? I've been looking for a reason to try to go online with the cube... worth it?

PSO is not and has never been an MMO. It's a modernized battle.net, like for Diablo. You have a graphical lobby area, but otherwise you go to isntanced creations of the gameworld, not one gameworld that everyone joins.

Hey I got a couple questions...

I played the original on DC and loved it... just kinda petered out on it for a while. It happens.

Trying to decide how to get back into it... I LOVED playing offline, but having online would be nice...

Should I...

A) Get the Xbox version. Live is hooked up, so if I want to go online with it, I can with no problems.

B) Get the GC version. But then I'll have to plunk $30 for a broadband adapter if I want to take it online. But I'd rather play it on GC, and I'd rather have the new stuff.

How is it on the Xbox? And if I buy a used copy of it for Xbox, can you not play it online? Is there a CD key that can only be used once?

Thanks

I *think* you can buy a used copy and it should work online still. Even with the Xbox Live (which is require for both on and offline play) you still have the $12.95 or whatever monthly Hunter's License fee and you don't play with Cube players.

I haven't played any of the other Phantasy Star games, but I really can't recommend PSO 1&2, though I have only played it off-line. I must be the only one who feels this way, but I think there are serious flaws with the gameplay, controls, and, in some places, level design, that make it so frustrating and tedious that it's not worth playing. Games like Diablo II, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath offer much better real-time RPG experiences, IMHO.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a crazy old dungeon-crawler addict, so I don't mind; you're right, though.

I didn't know that the XBox version requires Live to play offline. That's rather silly!

Can't really disagree with the description, but somehow I still love it hehehe. Maybe its the Phantasy Star world, maybe it's the "OMG I JUST FOUND AN UBER GUN" feeling, or maybe my chao (is that what they were called?) is just too cute, but the game is really fun :)

Fun to max 'em out.

Question to all: I'm absolutely not an online gamer (it just doesn't do it for me)... Is PSO Plus worth it if I were to play offline only?

You can play a used copy on Live, since it uses your Live account and not a code passkey. You will have to pay a $7.95 monthly Hunter's license though, as you would on GC also.

This seems like just a minor expansion pack to me and after having put in over 400 hours on PSO on DC and Xbox, I'll pass.

I have like 8 mags. I know tynstar has more than 20 @_@ And all of the special morph mags.

Leveling up is fun and all the side quest can keep you very busy.
Its got a good story and episode 2 is beautiful.

Offline play was fun for me until I began playing online. Then offline became a job (kidding) But online play is great if you can find a group who will play with you all the time. I hated playing with jerks who took all the good shit

As my group always divided all the good stuff ;)

I wonder if they are going to rerelease the broadband adapter for the gamecube. :hmm: If they do , I may just buy another one for raritys sake :o

i used to play this game constantly on the dc. it used to be a guessing game when i didnt have people to play with me, as when i was beginning and didn't even know all of the dungeons yet, others would just let me die and take all of my stuff. i actually did that to 1 guy and he got all pissed cuz he had some god armor.

once you get yourself a team of people that are all about equal, the game is awesome, as everybody levels up together, and everybody fights together, its pretty fun

now the gc version. will i go online, if they charge a fee, probably not. i am too old school to pay subscription fees. i used to play pso and didn't have to pay a dime. i used to play rainbow 6 and half life online without a fee (on pc, of course). i am not trying to go off topic, i am just saying that the chances of me buying this one is pretty slim since it would require me to pay a monthly fee

Yes I have 20 mags and i made them all. No DUPERS!!!!!

Yes I will get it. I still play the game from time to time. I have over 600 hours logged.

And the games is not deep and thats one of the reason I like it. Nice mindless fun with some friends.

I don’t want to try any of the EQ games because they are too evolved. I want something nice and easy.

It frightens me that this game has been released AGAIN.

I played as much Dreamcast PSO as anyone, here's my review from back in the day:
http://www.digitpress.com/reviews/pso.htm

In fact, I even wrote Tips & Tricks' strategy section when v2 came out. No lie, go look it up!

I was thrilled when Ep I & II came out but the new adventure lost some of that magic I had the first time around. Maybe I was burned out on the game but the new levels, pretty as they were, just didn't grab me.

When I saw this I thought again - do I get into it again?

What's changed - as several others have mentioned here - is that there are way better, more involving and ORIGINAL online console games available now. Between all of the Xbox live stuff and even the new PS2 online titles... this just seems like a step backwards.

Give me a NEW Phantasy Star Online, and not another goddamn card battle game and I'll think about it. Until then, I'll be off playing other stuff.
