Whoa.

I did not expect this title to make it here to the USA at all!

I was totally surprised to see it at my local EB Games store for only $14.99.

From what the salesperson told me, the only differences are that there is an extra character to use and that there are some additional levels to play when compared to the original "GunGrave". Other than that, the game is exactly the same as the previous one.

Shit....

I have the original GunGrave and I never really got into it, but now I'm considering trading the original, getting about $1.00 for it (lol) and buying the new one.

Has anybody else tried this game yet?

Keep the original and get Overdose. It's not worth wasting good software for crappy trade in prices.

I picked Overdose up yesterday. It's faster and controls better than the original. Only negatives are that a) the sound effect for Grave's shots is nowhere near as cool as in the original b) the game strangely lacks music in many spots, and c) it lacks a Japanese language with subtitles option (though the dub is alright thus far).

The game is definitely better though and well worth the price.

Thanks for the info klausien.

I will keep the original since you're indicating a few 'adjustments' to the gameplay as well as the sound.

At $14.99, you can't really go wrong anyway. :)

I picked up this one last week. I don't know if I'll be playing it daily, but it's enjoyable for sure.

Gungrave and Gungrave: OD don't share ANY levels. No levels in OD are borrowed from the original. (I believe a few of the music tracks are carried over, however.) As klausien noted, OD is the superior game: better controls, faster gameplay, fewer slowdown seizures, more characters, and better unlockables. Totally worth the $15.

Awesome. I must be one of the few that paid full-price for the original (well, $44.99 at EB for a used copy) and loved it. Thanks for the heads up, and I'm especially glad this one's $15 instead of $50 (a trend that seems to be gaining momentum!).

Yes!!!! I bought this game its day of release, I couldn't pass it up at $15, especially since I absolutely loved the original gungrave. And It's a completely new game, with 2 new characters, and the game is refined greatly from the original. It's so worth $15 it's not even funny. If you're a fan of games where you shoot things like crazy, then you'll love it. I know I do!

Am I the only guy that never quite caught on the whole Gungrave boat? I didn't really like the game much... :/

That said, OD was pretty cheap, and is somewhat better than the original.

Coolness.

Thanks for even more detailed info, zmweasel.

Now it's set in stone. I AM going to pick Gungrave OD up today. Hell, I'll even pick up Gradius V as well. :D

Nope. Many 'game journalists' agreed with you. Most slammed it for being way to short with minimal replay value, rather than lauding one of the only non-pretentious shooting-fests of recent years. The beauty of Gungrave is in it's simplicity. Essentially all you are is shooting wave after wave of enemies, but you look cool doing it. There's even a damned 'stylish pose' button! How many other games can have a smile on your face with little more than a couple thousand presses of the square button? Also, a decent beat count can be hard to maintain, especially when trying to earn higher rankings.

It's one of those games you have to try to see whether or not it's for you, and at $14.99 for the new one, you've definitely got a compelling reason to give it a shot.

Also, and this is a little off topic, but I'm very excited about all the quality budget releases lately. ESPN, Guilty Gear X2 Reload and now this. This is one trend I hope publishers stick to. It's easy on the pocket book and helps some smaller oft-overlooked titles receive a lot more attention. A lot of this generation's sleeper hits would have generated much more buzz had they been released at a bargain price initially.

Gotta chime in and say that I bought the original at full price and have no regrets.

I have given up on listening to reviewers. I think in a manner opposite of most mainstream game journalists anyway. For instance, I just got Advance Guardian Heroes, which has been receiving a bit of a drubbing, and found it to be quite excellent. The slowdown is exaggerated for effect. The game is also one of the finest beat 'em ups I have had the pleasure of playing.

To each his own. It is irritating to continually see good pure action games receive crappy reviews, but that is a subject for another thread.

I bought Gungrave Overdose and Dog's Life today, and I've only been able to find one copy each at any EB Games in the surrounding area. Plus, I try to support Mastiff because it's a smaller publisher like Working Designs.
