I'm not asking for "bad 2D games" here, but there are so many games in this category and you keep hearing the same popular ones over and over in discussion.
So tell me. What UNpopular/obscure 2D Fighters are actually worth playing?

JoJo's Bizzare Adventure. Sure it's cheap, but so is Marvel Vs. Capcom 2!
Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves. Still pretty much unknown amongst the non-Neo Geo crowd, and still some of the best Fatal Fury action you can get outside of Real Bout Special.
Waku Waku 7. One of the strangest video games ever, and a blast to play as well.
Pocket Fighter. Seems to have faded into obscurity...it's Capcom for beginners, and the cameos alone make it worth it.
SNK Vs. Capcom, King of Fighters R2, Samurai Shodown 2, SNK Gal's Fighter. The Neo Geo Pocket had GREAT fighting games!

Battle Tycoon for the Super Famicom is a fairly good fighter from the mid '90s. It looks pretty primitive, but it's got an enjoyable little character-building mode that's practically a miniature RPG.
I'm a complete sucker for Capcom's mech brawler Cyberbots, which hit the arcades, Saturn, and PSX about 1996. While the game is far simpler than Street Fighter or Darkstalkers, its designs are excellent and there are lots of detail-heavy battles with big robots. It's also one of the few fighting games that develops a storyline to coincide with the combat.
And though most of it has been released in America, the Guilty Gear series is still grievously underrated, in my opinion. The fighting system rewards both button-flailing and aggressive tactics a tad too greatly, but the gameplay has a fair degree of nuance, the anime-like atmosphere and character art are spectacular, and the frantic pace makes the fighting heaps of fun. That, and Millia Rage is incredibly cool. 'Cause she fights by using her hair. Which is cool, right?

WeaponLord for the MD and Super Fami is a very underrated game: the parry system is incredibly deep. If you and a friend take the time to learn its nuances, the gameplay comes to resemble Bushido Blade, because of the "fake outs" and mind games you can play. "Will he attack high or low? How should I parry?"

World Heroes simply because I can kick anybody's ass with any character in that game.
what's that old konam fighter called? Yi Ar Kung Fu? I used to play that all the time.

I must agree with Mark of the wolves (My fav 2d fighter of all time). Also must point out Waku Waku 7, Last Blade 2, Pocket Fighter, as being underplayed. I've seen alot of Last Blade and Guilty Gear X players in the Michigan area, to be sure, but they are still pretty low in comparison to say, 3rd strike or cvs2.

Aw come on. There a bazillion 2D fighters in MAME that no one talks about. Surely SOMETHING in there is worth playing?
How about "Blood Storm"?

BloodStorm and I have a sordid little history. I first played it back in 1994 and thought it was the greatest thing since Street Fighter II. I sang its praises at every opportunity, wrote letters about the game to numerous magazines (none saw print, but EGM put up one of my "What Ifs"), and only increased my support when the game flopped and vanished from arcades.
Last year, I finally played it again, thanks to the miracle of MAME, and I was shocked by the fact that I once loved this game. It's crude, it's primitive, and it's just . . . distasteful. And that's a complaint I rarely make about games.
And yet, it's one of the few MAME files that I keep around, and I can't point to misguided nostalgia as the only reason. BloodStorm's crass and basic, but it's also inventive. The password system and interchangeable powers are unique, and the game's got a load of secrets, from the hidden "Agents of Nekron" to the dozens of taunts you can unleash after a fight.
So I guess that BloodStorm, for all of its gore and arm-ripping excess, is worth checking out.

Yu Yu Hakusho for the 3do. Not that good graphics, when compared to Super Street Fighter II Turbo also for 3do, but a LOT of fun! Sadly, I traded it with someone online for Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast. Can't track down another copy of Yu Yu anymore...
