In your opinion what is the best fighter of all time. and by fighter i mean a game such as street fighter or teeken....not backyard wrestling LOL or boxing. Make sure u select a title - not just the brand name.

bad example: King of Fighters
good example: King of Fighters 2001 edition

Who wouldn't have fought with Lee? Why that crusty old...[/dennisandthehermit] LOL

Jeez, best fighter? That's pretty...deep, you know.

I like Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory, and others besides, too.

Choaniki: Bakuretsu Rantouden

...

... Okay, maybe not. ;) I'll go with Garou: Mark of the Wolves. I'd pick King of Fighters '99 too, but the KOF series is a little too "hardcore" for my inferior fighting game skills.

If super Smash bros. melee counts, I'll go with that. If not, then it's a tie between Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen 2, Power Stone 2, and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.

Bishin Densetsu Zoku. Ha!

On the other hand, I've discovered that Battle Tycoon isn't that bad. Not amazing, but not too bad!

Smash Bros Melee is a fighting game. A very unique one, but a fighter nonetheless.

My vote goes towards Street Fighter 2 Turbo: Hyper Fighting. 2d Fighting at it's finest. Notables also include Samurai Shodown 2, Sam Sho 5, SF3 3rd Strike, and Fatal Fury Special.

I don't like smash bros. and I don't think it fits with classic fighter games at all. Its a game of its own genre. I dont see how pressing A and B to hit with stuff u pick up is fitting to the genre. Naturally thats just my opinion and I don't mind if anyone thinks different

SFA3 Cody can pick up a knife and fight with it. In Powerstone, you pick up items and fight with those.

Sides, even if you turn off the items in Melee, it's still a fighting game. It's got a good amount of depth in the game engine, so there is more to it then just mashing A and B. Wavedashing, L-cancelling, spikes, edge guarding, and so forth. It's not a traditional fighting game, but then, Virtua Fighter wasn't a traditional fighter when it came out. Neither were the Capcom Vs. games. Even Street Fighter 2 was a step away from the previous fighting games.

You can hate smash bros all you want, but the bottom line is it is a fighting game.

if i have to pick one to rule over all, and never pick up another fighter?

easy. SF2 turbo.

if i can make a list:

1a) SF2 turbo
1b) SF3 3rd strike (technically better than SF2, but you can ALWAYS find someone who will throw down in SF2 and put up a decent fight)
2) soul calibur (DC)
3) samurai showdown 2
4) guily gear X2 #reload
5) SSB: Melee
6) capcom vs SNK2: EO
...
3472387432) Marvel vs Capcom 2...most overrated game evAr... LOL i can't believe the prices the PS2/Xbox versions fetch on ebay.

Most fighting game fans either love or hate the vs. series. I'm in the former.

MvC2 is where it's at for me. No other fighting game plays as fast as it does, or holds potential for continuously comboing up new characters for devastating results. The premise is rock solid. And the selection of characters is unmatched.

If I were to do a full list it would probably be:

1) MvC2
2) SF:3T
3) Samurai Showdown 2
4) Capcom vs SNK 2
5) Virtual Fighter 4
6) Street Fighter Alpha 3
7) Last Blade 2
8) Super Smash Brothers: Melee
9) Power Stone 2
10) Soul Calibur

Honorable Mentions: Bushido Blade and Guilty Gear X2 (to be honest, I haven't played it enough, but it has the potential to hit the top of my list)

I can't speak for buttasuperb, but I'd choose Last Blade over Last Blade 2 also. Last Blade 2 just feels like a rehash to me. I get that "same old, same old" feeling from it. It's not bad, but... it doesn't feel worth playing to me.

At top tiers, yes, but so is Guilty Gear X2 and Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike. (Sol Badguy anyone, what about gimped characters like Twelve and Q)?

For the normal fighting game aficionado, the play balance is more than satisfactory.

Hey hey, Q is not gimp buddy...I know crazy people who have mastered that ironed mask man...and I don't like to brag, but I play a mean Twelve

I always work with what I got and pull off a miracle

Let me rephrase. Gimped isn't the right word, more like balance compromised. I've never seen Q or Twelve successfully played against a strong Dudley or Ken.

But, I'll grant, with the beauty of SFIII's parry system, it's hard to note any character as gimped.

True, it does seem impossible, but with the parrying system, I've seen some crazy stuff pulled off

Power Stone 2 (DC)

I'm just getting back into the fighting genre after a 10 year break and am playing every 2D & 3D fighter that I can get my hands on. I'm by no means an expert at fighters yet, but my favorite so far has been Street Fighter III: Third Strike. The parry system is a great addition to the game and the super art moves are real bitchin and easy to pull off too.

For 3D fighters, it's Soul Calibur. No doubt about it. Power Stone 2 is a close second though.

I picked up Guilty Gear #Reload last week and I just can't get into it. Maybe it's because of the wacked-out characters and that it plays so fast. I dunno...I'll give it another try later. Maybe it'll grow on me.

Damn this is hard. As much as I love Guilty Gear XX I can't give it the nod. I'm torn between KoF 97, Garou: MotW, and SFA3. It's a hard road but I think I have to give it all too...

King of Fighters '97. The most underrated in the series and yet possibly the best. Plus it has King in it and is therefore godly.

For me its Garou: mark of the Wolves. I know some would say, why not just choose SF3:TS instead of the obvious imitation, but what it may lack in comparison to its father in terms of gameplay, is made up for in pure art.

MotW > SF3 in character/stage/music design.

SF2: Hyper Fighter, KOf 98, and LB 1 round out my list.

OK.......seriously, I'd probably have to go with one of the variations of Street Fighter 2. That's what got me into fighting games to begin with - either the Championship Edition or Turbo. I also enjoyed the Vs. series, the Alpha series, and the little bit I've played of SF 3.

I played Shaq Fu when it came out. it was one of my first games. I thought it was good back then. When i bought a new Genesis a few years back i started off with all the old games i had beforeand realized that that was one of them that got infinately harder.
Anyways when i was a kid i beat it multiple times. Also i have purchased the game sold it repurchased it and am currently looking into a sealed version. (All Genesis)

Say it again, say it again. Garou: Mark of the Wolves is a great game. The Neo Geo never ceases to amaze me. I remember when I used to love Street Fighter on the SNES when they incorporated QSound so in some form or fashion, all-time would be one of the SF (but not that 3d crap they had). But Garou is drawn beautifully and the music is HYPE.

Word.

I'll go even one step farther and say that 2k3 is better than MvC2. Marvel , IMO, has too many throwaway characters and a handful of GODS, while 2K3 has one god and a more balanced roster.

Besides, nothing can top 'Zoc's Peck from Hell (tm). If 2K3 hits XBL you bastards better look out for my Terry/Zoc/Garcia team 8-)

Thought about that: QSound is an encoding technology, and as far as I know you don't have to do anything else to get results (i.e. you can use QSound on CDs). As far as I can tell, it's yet another variation on the old "sounds played slightly later than others will be recognized by the brain as coming from somewhere else," for displacement effects. Fun catchphrase though.
