Clearly a prototype... NOT! What company used brushed aluminum in 1988? NONE! Seems like a neat homebrew to me. But I never trust anyone who ships something under a pound for more than $10. Even more than $7 is such a stupid margin for a pound of postage in the US.

Well actually, Atari was very big on brushed aluminum stuff for quite a while. Looks pretty cool, but I'm sure that you're more of an Atari expert than me.

don't get me wrong, it looks cooler than hell, but it could be done very easily. Just take a genesis controller, rid out its guts, and make a snazzy case and not do anything with the b and c buttons.

Aye, if it was metallic to match the 7800 (that wasn't brushed- if I understand 'brushing' correctly), it would have had two buttons. And Atari wouldn't be mixing brushed and woodgrain. Woodgrain, at the time, must have seemed quite passe.

As I was saying, the process of aluminum brushing has many facets and could implicate a process of a spectrum of results, in consideration of the facts the I merely skimmed upon and therefore were and was not considering that I may have......... -_-

My guess is, someone machined this up not too long ago. Maybe they did it as a one-off, or maybe they intended on making more of them. It's got too much style and too little plastic to be from that era. :)
I'll tell you why I really don't think it's from that era. With an Atari joystick, you control the action with your right hand and use your left thumb for the button. If Atari had developed a pad way back then, I think they would have carried that same convention over to their joypad.

dude, the only prototype controller i have seen on ebay that i literally creamed my pants about was the bleempod. it was supposed to be a bleem controller meant for bleemcast. when bleem went out of business, the dude sold the 1 and only controller. wow, this controller, fake or not, can't stand a flame to that bleempod.
