View Full Version : TV/Console Hookups Question

Well, I got my new TV today. :) It looks great -- being able to change from four different display modes really gives you a lot of choice, as some channels work better on some settings then others.

I only had a chance to hook my XBox up to it using my new composite cables (which also came today -- thanks to Sylentwulf for the QUICk and cheap order! :D ) and took a look at Madden, and I was really impressed.

I just have a couple of 'stupid' questions that maybe someone else who also has a new TV with tons of hookups and options knows about. :D

Do they sell regular composite cables in the stores? I just realized that I'll need to get one to connect my new Pelican Selector Pro box to my TV set.

Microsoft makes TWO A/V packs for the XBox -- I have the regular model, which is the 'Advanced' one, that has plugs for S-Video, A/V, and Optical audio. But there's a second one also, that is more expensive and I believe has more stuff. Only I've NEVER seen one in stores -- it's ALWAYS sold out. :o Can anyone give me info on it? Is it worth having with my new TV set?

I have a set of compostie cables from Nintendo for my GameCube on order (thank God I have a older GC!). Is there support on the GC, like there is with the XBox and PS2, for optical audio?

Oh, and I allready went into my XBox and PS2 setup screens and changed them over to Widescreen and 1080 modes. 8-)

Thanks again for the help! And please don't bash me TOO hard for being ignorant. :P

The "other" XBox one is for component video and it has an optical out.

Great choice on the System Selector Pro.

Yes, they sell component cables. You can find them just about anywhere, but your SSP should have come with a set.

No optical audio on the GC, just Pro Logic II which isn't too bad, but still not the same.

I actually have'nt opened the System Selector Pro yet. :) I'll see if it has a set of cables.

Damn, I've NEVER seen that 'other' Microsoft A/V pack. They must be REALLY in short supply. I'll hunt around for one on my next day off. But it has support for component cables, I'll track one down somewhere.

Your Xbox S-vid cables shouldn't be any more expensive than the component ones. Both A/V Packs are $19.99 at Circuit City stores, etc. They had a used pair at Gamestop last night for $9.99 (MS brand).

Also, quickie term primer:

composite: red, white, yellow (1 video, 2 audio)

component: red, blue, green (all video), can be paired with RCA cables (red, white) or optical cable on Xbox (digital coax on most dvd players is available too).

No CC's around me. Just Wal-Marts, Best Buy's, and EB's.

I'll check agian....I've just never seen the other AV pack.

Best Buy's website does'nt even LIST another XBox AV Pack besides the Advanced one. No wonder they are always sold out. :hmm:

It would help if I knew what the other one -- the one with the component cable support -- is called. :)

that's what you're looking for. Unfortunately neither EB or Gamestop seem to stock it on their website. If you can't find it anywhere else, I'll check work for you and see if we've got any. I can probably pick you one up for cost + shipping (maybe a little less than retail given that I get a mediocre discount). Let me know.

It looks like Circuit City has them, and there is ONE in the whole STATE, about 20 minutes from me. I'll head out there on Thursday or Friday and see how I make out. They sell it for $20, the same price as the Advanced pack. Another hard to find item, I guess.

Yeah, I'm not really surprised that WalMart and Kmart don't have them because, electronically, they usually cater to the lowest common denominator (although that's changing slowly). I am surprised that EB and Gamestop don't have them though. That's kind of ridiculous on their parts.

Yeah, I was surprised Best Buy did'nt carry them either. Everything else I needed for doing this upgrade I got there.

(And this UPGRADE, between the TV, the stand, the new cables and devices, the delivery charge, the extended warrenty, etc. is costing me a pretty penny -- about $2300! Oh well, I'll make the monthly payments and then pay the rest off next year with tax refunds.)

FWIW, recently I have seen a number of people state that the HD AV Pack has been discontinued. I doubt it is true (makes no sense since the potential market continues to expand), but that is what is being said. Definitely harder to find it now than it was a year ago.

Why would it be discountined? HD TV's are GROWING in popularity.

I'm going out today to CC and see if I can get it. If not, I'll have to buy it online, I guess.
