Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone could help answer a question for me. Did some Turbo Duo games NOT come with the cardboard box? And if so, does anyone have a list of which ones didn't? I'm guessing Lords of Thunder didn't since my copy has a back insert with a story summary, screenshots, etc.

from what i've found all TG-16 Hu-cards came with a cardboard box, also from what I've found all TG-CD game came with an outer box(although not sure on CD, some later titles may not have). Finally All duo games I beleive did NOT come with an outer box.

There are quite a few Duo games that came with the cardboard boxes. Games like Last Alert and Ys Book 1 and 2, Valis II and III, Exile, Cosmic Fantasy 2, etc. Not ALL of them did though, especially the later releases.
Lord of Thunder did not come in a cardboard box. I don't think that's actually info that made it into the DP Guide Advance...an oversight on my part. I'll see what I can do about making a list and having it added to the online rarity guide.
Off the top of my head:
Cardboard box:
Valis 2
Valis 3
Ys Book 1 and 2 (retail release)
Cosmic Fantasy 2
Exile
Last Alert
Ys III
No box:
Super Air Zonk
Beyond Shadowgate
Terraforming
Dynastic Hero
Might and Magic III
Exile: Wicked Phenomenon
Vasteel
Cotton
Dragon Slayer
Dungeon Explorer II
Gates of Thunder/Bonk's pack in
Unsure:
Shadow of the Beast
Splash Lake
Addams Family (think that had a box)
Any others I can't remember right now
That should help a little....but I know there's more CD games that had boxes. I'll look into it...
Neither Shockman nor New Adventure Island had cardboard boxes.

Thanks for all the help so far, guys. Just got back into the Duo scene. Sold my TG-16 back in the early 90s when I was young (i.e., poor and stupid). Sold the system, but still have a lot of the games with boxes. Recently got a PC Engine Duo R-X (Thanks D-Lite!) so I'm looking to get some games. But damn my "analness" for having complete games with boxes. The search for Soldier Blade and Parasol Stars boxes continues...
Shoot, you're right. I'm thinking jewel cases.

I'm not sure about the others, but Vasteel has a slip cover instead of a box. Is the same true for exile:wicked phenomenon?

sorta related, did the gates of thunder/bonk pack-in come with a back insert (inside the jewel case)? mine didn't come with one (used).

I think every single game came with a card board box, and there were some that are card board box only. I have Air Zonk and Shockman and they are just a box and a plastic tray, I also have the box/tray for new adventure island but no game so I know that one is in the same boat. One thing that's always confused me is how come some games have black spines with a colored tab on the top, and some come in jewel cases with a orange spine?

I didn't read all of the posts all that well, but if you're thinking about doing a list... contact me first. As soon as I get off of my lazy ass this will be done... actually I should say my quite busy ass. This is a diamond in the rough my friends... just needs to be smoothed out and updated with some info from my collection... it pretty much details everything you'd want to know with the exception of rarities and prices... that's already covered in a well written book.

Now a statement about imports which is really a question: My copy of Shinobi (PC-Engine) comes with the case, no box. The imports didn't often come with cardboard boxes, correct? I do know that Daimakaimura comes in a cardboard slip cover, but it's a SuperGrafx game.

And just to add my quick and sloppy two cents:
All HuCards came with a box except for Keith Courarage
All Regular CDs came with a box except for Vasteel which came with a dust jacket similar to that of one that would come with a book.
All Super CDs did not come with a box... none of them except for Exile: Wicked blah blah blah that came with a slip cover just like Vasteel's.
There are some technicalities like the Ys pack in, Sherlock Holmes 2 is CD compatible in addition to SCD... shit like that. But what I've said above is a pretty good rule of thumb to go by.

I think there's only a select few PC Engine games that came with boxes. I'm pretty sure you can count them on one hand... but don't quote me on it.

After reading Hellvin's original post, I'd say it's just a design change. Earlies are orange, mids are neons, and lates are no case.
