These are not in order from play first and play last :)
Final Fantasy VIII PSX
Final Fantasy VII PSX
Final Fantasy VI PSX
Final Fantasy V PSX
Final Fantasy I NES
Final Fantasy II SNES
Final Fantasy III SNES
Final Fantasy X PS2
Final Fantasy X-2(maybe) PS2

Looks good but:
FF VI (6) PSX and FF III (3) SNES are the same game.

FF I NES is trash. I recommend FF III (3) NES instead.

FF IX (9) PSX sound be added.

If you want to play good final fantasy games...

Play FF1 first (either Origins or the NES version), go to FF3/6 SNES, and then to VII. Then you can say you enjoyed the best of the series in minimal time.

As for other good RPG's besides the FF series, it's been talked about here in the past. Just do a searching for threads and you can find it. :)

The quickest way to try out the older FF games (1-6) is just to download a ROM and play it for a bit. The versions recently released on the PSX are just enhanced some.

FF7 and FF Tactics are really good ones that arn't that expensive. FF7 may be the best, well in my opinion LOL

None of the games in the series are really expnesive, thank God, due to the large number of copies that have been cranked out. FF 7-10 were all re-released in the Greatest Hits Line, so they can be found for $10-20. Final Fantasy Orgins (1-2) can be found for about $20-30, and Final Fantasy Anthology (FF5 and FF6) and Final Fanatsy Chronicles (FF4 and CT) have also been re-printed as the Greatest Hits line for about the same price. Even Final Fantasy Tactics has been reprinted and can be found around the same price.

The only ones that command some good money are the PC versions of FF7 and FF8 (I've sold mine and seen them sell around $50-80) and boxed complete orginal runs of FF4 and FF6 for the SNES.

It's EASY for games to run into the millions of dollars to make these days.....ESPECILY RPG's.

But yeah, I think FF7 was the first game to break several million in development costs. Anyone know for sure?

Things have changed in recent years of course, but RPGs used to be the cheapest games to make, believe it or not. Most little developers just starting in Japan would often choose an RPG as their first game because it would require the least amount of time, money, and skill to produce and they'd usually get a pretty good return on it due to Japan's insatiable hunger for any and all RPGs. Most of those games were obviously not of the same quality of the RPGs made by talented, experienced companies, though, and thankfully the US was spared most of them. :P

You're right, of course, and I should have added that it's only really BEEN since FF7 -- which totally changed the RPG market in America -- that RPG's have started to get lavish treatment, with fancy CGI's, actual orchastras being hired, and major promotions.

The cheap cost of the format is one reason Square gambled on a RPG to save the company back in 1985. ;)

Easily enough. Just some walking frames in four (well, okay...three) directions, some badly Mode 7'd flare effects, some big bosses, bad music, floor tiles, bare bones collision system, a couple menus...WHAMO! Vermili...I mean, there's your RPG.

Almost all action games are tougher in that you have framerare requirements, need to put together an engine which supports smooth scrolling with lots of graphics showing up, maybe some things in the background can be destroyed, and of course the art...just having a standing sprite wave his arms around doesn't cut it LOL

Another category that's usually pretty darn easy to develop - shooters. A step above RPGs in terms of the game engine, but that's about it.

Are the phantasy stars good? I realyl really really played pso alot .

Most people would argue that PS4 was better then FF3.

Not quite. While PS4 IS a awsome game and my favorite of the series (and my fav Genesis RPG) it was'nt QUITE as good as either FF4 or 6.

Hey SMB, while you're picking up SNES RPG's see if you can snag yourself a copy of Secret of Evermore. It's one of my personal fave's on the system, and because it's not that popular it shouldn't run too high pricewise. It's got the same style gameplay as Secret of Mana, but it has time travel. The Lufia series is also good.

But back to FF. I'd say start with VI, then V, IV, VII, IX, X, X-2 and then finish it off with FF: Origins on PSX. Forget VIII ever hapened LOL

PS4 is excellent, but I haven't heard anyone argue it's better than FF3. For me it's second only to FF3, PS4 was the game to get me into RPG's so it has sentimental value, but FF3 is the game I played through 3 times straight one hot summer in '96

Personally I didn't like FF VII either, and I had trouble getting into FF III. But FF II, DAMN, that was the one that got me into the FF series.

I've noticed that people who hate FF7 tend to love FF8, and vice versa.

Maybe that explains why I rank 8 better then 7. LOL

Well, Phantasy Star 1-3 was recently re-released on one game for the GBA, and we're getting a remake of PS4 on the PS2 next year. At least you can check out THOSE games. :)

Damn, I must be crazy because I think the first one is the best LOL Storywise and everything.

FF1 and...

FFIV (or FFII on SNES) is my second favorite...very close second place.

FFII, I've played the remake and it was confusing. Haven't really put enough time into the rest to judge, though FFVI and FFVII I think are pretty good.

All of em I recommend. go on a FF spree. download roms.

Because it was my very first RPG I've blindly beaten in Japanese in a real console , I'd have to say Final Fantasy III for 8-bit Famicom is my favorite.

I've only played 1,4-9 and tactics, and only finished 5-9.

So.
Best Story: FF3/6 or FF7.
Best Mechanics: FF5 or FF3/6 or FF8.
Best Ending: FF8

Worst mechanics: FF7 (horrid, IMO)
Worst story: FF5 or FF8.

I'd say start off with FF3/6 or FF7 (just like everybody else)

or just skip the whole series entirely and play Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy Tactics. Chrono Trigger is so much better than any FF (series) game I've ever played. (IMO) and Final Fantasy Tactics is (IMO) one of the best games ever made. period.

On a side note, I think Chrono Trigger starts off a bit cheesy, so give it some time...maybe an hour or two. FFT starts off a little confusing, you probably won't fully understand the story the first time through the game, but the story is top-notch, and a beautiful, debatable ending.

As for FF8, i think the beginning of the game rocks, and the last part of the game and the ending rocks, but disc2 and 3 are kinda boring...and the main charactor is blah. I don't even remember FF5's story that much...i remember it being kinda drab.

As I said before, it seems that if you loved FF7 you hated FF8, and vice versa......with a few exceptions, me being one of them. :)

I've said in other threads why I think so highly of the game (third on my list behind 4 and 6), but I liked the super realistic graphics, the soundtrack, the minigame, the enemies leveling up with you, not having to worry about money or buying a ton of items, and the graphics. Most of the charcters and plot were good and I can personaly identify with Squall because I'm a lot like him in many ways.

But I can also understand how people come off about the Junction System and the love based theme of the game.
