I love dungeon crawlers.. from Bard's Tale to... Eye of the beholder. So I was pretty excited when I heard it was being "ported" to the GBA. Well, everything was going along nicely..

Wow. I was planning on checking out some reviews to see if it was faithful to the original and worth playing as an introduction to the series. Guess I have my answer now.
So far the GBA remake that has dissapointed me the most is Golden Axe from that crappy Sega Smash Pack 3 in 1. Come on Sega. Get with it. It appears they've cleaned up their act a bit with Phantasy Star Collection though. Even though it's based on the same bad translations as back in the day, the actual ports (emulation?) are great. If you had told me 10 years ago that THQ would someday be helping Sega save face........well, you know.

Are you guys serious? The combat system in the Gold Box series of games kicks the ass of the later series games like Eye of the Beholder! What made these battle so much more fun for me is that you could position yourself strategically and watch it play out like on a board. I dunno, I would never have considered buying this game but if it's got that boardgame-style combat, I'm suddenly interested.
As usual, this is my humble opinion.

And definitely an opinion that I agree with - the gold box games were great and EOB in my opinion was a very poor shadow of Dungeon Master which I think came out on the Atari ST.
Oh hello by the way - sorry haven't been around much

The Phantasy Star collection is sort of Emulated. At least the SMS 1 is a emulater game for sure. PSII and III have menu's pop up in different places so they must be ports.. great collection of games I've already beaten :?
The #1 reason the GBA has been such a dissapointment to me is all the games I finished 10 years ago are now the GBA's bread and Butter.

I love the Gold box games to! but with a dungeon crawler the whole thing was to keep in the puedo 3D enviroment in a 1st person.. this game breaks the mold of the dungeon crawler, and in my book that shouldn't be done.

]Dungeon Master which I think came out on the Atari ST.
It was released on the Amiga, Atari ST first; but almost every 16 bit and some 8 bit computers got a port, including the SNES. I remember when it came out it was the first Amiga game to require more then 512k of ram (it won't run on a stock A1000 or A500.) It was also one of the first Amiga games you could install on a Hard Disk.
You can download the Multi-Language PC format here.. Though unless your running Win95-98 I'd suggest getting the Amiga version and just emulate.

I have to agree with Radeon. I myself loved the Gold Box adventures, especially Curse of the Azure Bonds. I think it's still installed on the computer somewhere...
My point however, is that when Eye of the Beholder came out, I said 'wow, this is different' and it was. And IMHO, it was awesome as it was originally presented I never once thought 'gee, I really wish this had an overhead combat mode.'
Maybe they should try translating the Gold Box games over to GBA instead, perhaps in trilogy form? Now that would be well worth it.. picking up the whole Dragonlance trilogy in 1 cart.
