At a garage sale I went to I saw a copy of the game in this box. Yeah it looked pretty bootleggish, since the quality of the container looked odd, but yknow, I just don't know much about the game itself so i figured i'd ask :o

The game will never come out. EVER!

Seriously... I know they adopted id's "when it's done" policy, but id's allowed to say that because they actually produce something in a semi-timely fashion...

I think either way this game is screwed, because if it does end up coming out, it's probably going to look pretty dated, or the few parts that weren't upgraded for the 6th time for whatever new engine. It just always seems to happen when you have like 3 or 4 people trying to make some huge kind of a game like this. I mean, maybe when(if) computer graphics should ever round off, or realtime rendering technology doesn't really have many changes or innovations for a while, then maybe development cycles like this could be feasible. But right now, no way.

Games are not movies, and working on something like this for so long, when things are still growing like they are, is like putting a noose around your game's neck and leaving it up to us to kick the chair out from under it.

You saw this at a garage sale? Are you sure you didn't get it confused with that platformer game that came out about a year and a half ago?

Nope, it didn't have a platformer thing listed, and it had an 'RP' rating on it.

the game was announced in january of 1997. It started on the Quake engine (thats quake 1) and they just recently switched to the Doom 3 engine, so its not going to be out for a while. Although when HL2 comes out they'll probably switch to that engine. Then the Unreal 3 engine.

DNF's been in production since...

...well, they started working on it with the original Quake engine. We're coming up on the 10 year anniversary of the game's development having begun, folks. At this point they're probably counting on a MEGA hit to make up all the money they've spent on it.

That and they might have taken a hiatus from development for a few years (god, how often can you say that about a team working on ONE game?)

They certainly weren't likely running a full crew on the project - I imagine it's been more of a "back burner" project that they don't spend full time on.

Ahh...looked and looked, but I bet it's in the Archives section and in any case I can't find it.

Instead, here's a tasty strudel. (http://www.forumplanet.com/gamespy/topic.asp?fid=2370&tid=303099)*

I remember it quite well, though. That was a good one.

I have a November 1997 PC Gamer that has the "first ever" screenshots of the game. I think Broussard has said it probably won't be out until 2006 now.

Three things.

One, if the game takes this long, it will never ever ever ever live up to the hype, no matter what.
Two, they'd constantly need to revamp the graphics/AI/audio/etc. since a 1997 game won't look good today, even if it was built to run a 1FPS on those ancient machines.
Three, any game that takes this long to make could never make back the money they've lost already putting into it

Like I said, that assumes they're working on it all the time. 3D Realms has had a bit to do working on other projects, I'd assume. That and they get royalties from licensing the character, so...

For those that are interested theres a Duke Nukem Forever Timeline here (http://www.evilavatar.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=NS-Comments&file=index&sid=5821&tid=22301&mode=&order=&thold=), and it also includes a list of gaming events that happened during development.. and this:

The rovers Spirit and Opportunity were proposed, authorized, announced, designed, launched and successfully landed upon Mars within the timeframe of Duke Nukem Forever's development.

Im inclined to agree with ed, its most likely DNF has been relegated to side-project, or at best a small team of full time developers.

This reminds me of something very funny I saw once.

It was a video of something like a public service announcement from the early nineties. The theme was "Don't Copy That Floppy!". It was about piracy. There were two children in the school library playing a game, and one of them wants to play it some more, so the other starts to copy it for her. This prompts the deranged MC Hammer from Hell to appear in the computer and do a very long spiel of the evils of copying games off of the original floppy disc, or borrowing games from other people instead of buying them (seriously). This is all very obviously from back in the days before they found that guy who said, "hey, let's put everything into the form of a rap! Children are utterly defenceless when faced with demands that rhyme. They will hear it and, much like recipients of a Bene Gesserit Voice command, be forced to do our biddings." and shot him. The games in question are all indeed on nothing but floppy discs. After being harangued for a while, there's a short segue into a section where they speak with the programmers behind games then currently in development. One of these begins;

"Well, we're working on this game called Neverwinter Nights..."

Hah, good story Daria.

I think...the 3D Realms staff works on DNF whenever they have a rainy day ;)

The main different being THAT game came out. LOL

Sometimes games do takea long time to come out. Morrowind took FOUR years. But I agree, the length of time this game is taking is crazy.

Pretty much a whole generation of hardware has come and gone...maybe two? The PlayStation was pretty new when they started working on DNF; and nevermind all the other systems that have come and gone in that time.

Three major versions of Windows (desktop, that is, not counting server editions) have come and gone...so yeah, crazy long.

Gamespy just posted this article about DNF's cool new physics engine:

And there was much rejoicing.

And hey, Dahne, whatever happened to Moogle Charm?

Yaaay, and stuff.

Just make the damn game already guys.

At this point, I'd find a few low-poly remnants acceptable.

Hypermart decided it wanted people to pay for webspace. Which wasn't too upsetting for me, as it took way to much work to update and maintain. I actually have the whole thing saved for posterity on my computer back at home, heh.

You know, you'd think that after all this time they'd throw everything they have into DNF just to be done with it. Especially since the constant advances in technology keep making them have to scrap things and start over.
