View Full Version : PSO for GC.. EOL?

I almost cried.

I kept telling Willie that I hadn't heard anyone on the forum saying they'd had problems finding PSO. Or maybe I didn't see the posts if anyone did. Here was my day:

Already knew my local Walmart and Video Game Exchange didn't have the game, so didn't bother to look.
Head to the mall. Stop by EB first. I don't see anything in the display that even SAYS PSO, not even a price tag. Ask the saleslady behind the counter if they have any copies: "I wish we did."

Game Stop is second. Scope out the shelves. Again, nothing. Not even a price tag. Ask the salesperson behind the counter: "That's been discontinued." Me:"Excuse me? When? Why?" Salesman: "They discontinued it about a week after the release date. (I almost laughed in his face at this part) They only released it for fans of the Dreamcast version (as in what, they only made ONE copy for each fan? Jesus..) We won't be getting any copies unless someone trades one in."

The third stop is a music/game/movie store combo, and of course, nothing, not even a price tag there, either.

Best Buy at LEAST had a price tag/name card for it. And a big empty space in front of it.

Leave the mall, go to Toys R Us. Again, there's a card, space, no games. Decide to ask the salesperson in the video game section.. "Yeah, we have that game." Me: "Really? Because the shelf is empty." Salesperson goes out back to look, comes back empty handed. "We had six copies of it at least this weekend.." It's only Monday! So close, yet so far..

So, last stop, we go to Target, which we almost never stop at when we go to the mall (and we really should, because they always have better prices..) And, glory of glories, there is ONE copy, just ONE, laying in the bottom of the display case. I practically dragged the salesman over to take it out for me, and I made Willie stand guard by the case while I went to find the clerk.

So... What's going on? Why are there no copies to be found of this? Is it just because I'm in Maine? I mean, my local Walmart at least had some BBAs when I was there a couple weeks ago (although those are gone now... but they still have the modems). Has anyone else noticed shortages? Has it really been discontinued?

I got it a few days after it was released and I had a few problems finding it. EB and Best Buy didn't have it but Gamestop did. I haven't seen it on any shelf since.

Read my post from two weeks ago that says "PSO! Discontinued! get it now!"

Basically it has to do with two things..

1) a rumor that the PSO GC servers were pretty weak and Sega didn't want to stress them to breaking with being the only online game for the GC to play.

2) There were only so many BroadBand Adapters shipped by Nintendo until after Christmas. Being the only Online game, why produce more then people can get online with? I think you'll find you won't find to many BBA's around.

I can't find your post (although I'm searching still..)
Where did you get your information from?

edit: Found the thread

It was never confirmed that PSO was discontinued (quite frankly, I'm not willing to go on the word of GameStop alone, and that seems to be where the discontinued rumor got started).

Most places have PSO listed in the computer systems at Discontinued.. I doubt it's permanent.. They would be crazy not to make more.. It wouldn't make sense..

edit: then agian.. Sega DID pull all their Sports games from being made for the GC.. Maybe Nintendo did something really stupid and pissed Sega off and now Sega is going to be a Xbox exclusive.

This discontinued part of Gamestop just means that Gamestops/Babbages/Funcoland/Software ETC. won't get anymore in. This has no effect on the rest of the retail world. Sometimes, even with this though, copies magically fall into the shipping boxes.

So why did Gamestop get discontinued and other retail outlets not though?

Probably because they miscalculated the popularity of this game. Just so everybody's on the same page, the BBA has not been discontinued, there will be more in mid to late christmas.
