I was thinking of getting a SegaCD, in the 90's I liked games like
"Under a Killing Moon"

I thought that maybe Rise of the Dragon, or an FMV game would appeal to me. Is SegaCD a decent platform for this type of Adventure game?

Maybe Night Trap? Cliffhanger? I dunno man, my FMV stuff's all CD-i.

I'm looking for a mystery puzzle adventure type game. Something like 7th Guest, Under a Killing Moon, Grim Fandango. Something with minimal action, puzzles, and interesting plot.

I don't think that Under a Killing Moon could be made into a respectable port on any system other than the Dreamcast (but that's just me).

If you're talking about detective-style graphic adventures, there are a few on the SegaCD. Snatcher is the best one that I can think of.

From the games you're naming, it sounds like you'd be better off with a low-end Pentium and Windows 95.

Yeah Snatcher is awesome.

Gonna cost you $$$

*cough* could get it for free *cough*

Willy Beamish, Secret of Monkey island, Space Adventure Cobra to name a few. Snatcher is good too, but it has gun sequences if that counts as more than minimal action.

Under a Killing Moon has gun sequences.

Like when Tex is playing with his gun and then accidentally throws it out the window where a kid picks it up and shoots at him. LOL

I never played that game, but if it's an adventure game you want, I'd have to recommend Rise of the Dragon. It's not as expensive as Snatcher, but it's just as fun. It's already been mentioned, but I also recommend Willy Beamish. Great adventure game.

Rise of the Dragon is a must play, as well. It's by Dynamix, like Willy Beamish, but lacks the rediculous load times. The subject matter is dark and captivating, and the game moves quickly. Plus it's presented VERY well on the Sega CD. The voice casting turned out to be pretty good!

Snatcher is IMO the best of the point/click action heavy segaCD games. Of course I think FMV sucks, but Ground Zero Texas which hasn't been mentioned has FMZ and shooting element. But this game, like nearly every other FMV, I have been unwilling to sit down long enogh to actually beat, so plot is not something to which I can really attest.

Well, I ordered a SegaCD an a copy of Rise of the Dragon. Hopefully I can find more detective games...

I also ordered Sonic CD Just to add to my collection of sonic stuff.

Is Night Trap any fun? How big of a difference is the 32x version?

Theres a game for the Sega Saturn..... Butterfly Mansion or something like that? It's decent and came with my system.

Do you mean Mansion of Hidden Souls? That was out for Sega CD as well. People are turned into butterflies in the mansion and you have to rescue your sister and get out of there.

Mansion of Hidden Souls is very comparable to 7th Guest. Additionally, beyond the already mentioned games, is Monkey Island which is every bit as good as the PC version with horrendous loading times. And Panic! which, while not "adventure", is still an adventure to play through.

MoHS on the Sega CD is awesome. Very well done and a great game to play. Get it pronto.

Just stay far the hell away from the Saturn version. It's a turd that can be completed in 15 minutes the first time through.

I remember beating the SegaCD version of MOHS very quickly as well. It's not hard at all, but it is rather creepy. I'm glad you're getting Rise of the Dragon, as well. It's a classic that doesn't get a lot of recognition. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Have fun with the fusebox puzzle, too! LOL

I'm going to write an indepth review on rise of the dragon in a couple of of weeks or next month. I'll post my review on sega-16. I can't find any sites that have good in depth reviews of SegaCD games.

For short reviews, I like www.videogamecritic.net

Any ideas or comments ?

Yeah, I did some genesis stuff already (Ghouls & Ghosts, and hopefully my Altered Beast review will be posted this week). I really like the site, so want to contribute.

I'm just trying to find out as much as I can about SegaCD and there really isn't too much in depth stuff out there. The guys at this forum hav ebeen really helpful.

I'm really tempted to get Mansion of Lost Souls now...

Well I ordered Mansion of lost souls, and I get my SegaCD tommorow if UPS doesn't screw it up =).

I'm really excited to finally have one of these things. So far I will own Mansion of lost souls, SonicCd, Rise of the Dragon.

Other than snatcher, any recommendations?

Heimdall is excellent, and phenomenally better than the PC version (maybe not the Amiga version, but I haven't played it so I wouldn't know.)

I know it's not like Under a Killing Moon at all, but the Sega CD version of Ecco the Dolphin is probably one of the greatest games released on the system. True, it's very close to the cart version, but the arranged music is really good, and it's just a long, well-made game at it's core. (in my opinion, anyway; a lot of people seem to have a problem with this game).

Dark Wizard is worth a shot too; it's like an epic fantasy version of Military Madness.

I know these games are maybe different than what you're looking for specifically, but they are great games. Sega CD had a lot of gems that were available only for a short time, so if you want to know more of them, just ask and I'm sure people around here know more than I do! :D

Let me re-recommend Panic!; it's a one of a kind game. There's nothing else like it.

Essentually, you're a little boy in a world where machines have gone crazy. However, there's no "action" that takes place. You start off in a room where you're faced with a number of buttons you can press in the room. Each button causes something to happen; and these "somethings' are pretty much bat-crap loco. Anything from naked men running across the room to a giant boot crushing the room. Think Monty Python with a very Japanese twist. Pressing the "right" button will progress you around into another room. There are some 100+ rooms if I remember right each with any number of buttons.

Very wacky, very unique, and a Sega CD exlusive. You can get it for around 20 or so from eBay, and it's worth every penny.

I'm also very to the Sega CD ports of Ecco the Dolphin and Tides of Time. The soundtracks are quite excellent; very highly recommended.

Eternal Champions is a very underrated Sega CD fighting game. The load times can be a bit bad, but it's got a lot of depth and more secrets than you can shake a snake at.

Finally, let me recommend the Renovation games (Time Gal, Road Avenger, Cobra Command). They're "Dragon's Lair" style games, but they're a lot of fun to play through. Road Avenger is probably my favorite.

It might be interesting to note that SegaCD Rise of the Dragon was censored over the PC version. In the original PC release, you could play your cards right and get laid if you went on the date. It was pretty funny, she complains about his breath.

Sega CD had pretty much the best version of Prince of Persia I've ever played, as well.

Dungeon Explorer was really good as well. It's a little different from the PC Engine versions, but it's a welcome change!

I think you can use the Sega mouse with mansion of the hidden souls...

BTW, Snatcher is the BEST Sega Cd game, and a great adventure/exploration game, make sure you get it SOON!

Lunar SIlver Star is a GREAT RPG...The sequel is good too....

If you're into FMV Genre, I would suggest going with the 3DO instead, you can pick one up fairly cheap and it has the largest library of FMV games of any platform I'm pretty sure. And the quality is atleast a 100 times better than the Sega CD, Most game like Night Trap for example shrink the screen down to about a 1/3 of the picture area and its so grainy I couldn't enjoy any of it. Oh and the 3do games are pretty cheap too.

Graham Mitchell
10-05-2004, 07:46 PM
Oh man, I can't believe nobody steered you towards Lunar until today.

Basically, anything released by Working Designs is a must own, and I don't think anyone would argue with that, really. (I think it even applies to the Saturn).

For SegaCD this means Lunar, Lunar II: Eternal Blue, Popful Mail (designed by Falcom; an underrated and phenomenal developer) and Vay. I can't remember if there's any more.

Everything WD put out for the Sega CD has deluxe packaging, totally coherent (and quite humorous) dialogue, and often if improved over the Japanese version (Popful Mail in the US employs some multiple-scrolling backgrounds to the clouds where the Japanese version lacked it.)

These games are time consuming, but you're totally missing the point of having a Sega CD if you don't play at least one of them. THESE are the games people wanted to play on the stupid thing; Sega had other ideas about what to publish for it, which is why it didn't do so hot. Although, I hear it did absolutely horribly in Japan...probably because the PC-Engine had a larger install base and was continually upgrading the system cards to compete with MegaCD; plus it had a lot of the same type of games. This is just my guess, though.

Vay for SEGA CD Sucked IMHO....did u really play it?

Graham Mitchell
10-05-2004, 08:01 PM
Yeah, I really liked it. It wasn't as good as Lunar, but it was still good. You've got to understand that at that time, RPGs like this were RARE on our shores. If you got one, you appreciated it, even if it wasn't totally the cat's meow.

Hell, I played very far into Cosmic Fantasy II for the TG-16, which was HORRIBLE. I won't even look at the box for that anymore; but at that time, if I wanted an epic RPG, that's all that was offered.

People who go retrospectively and try these games may not like them as much as they thought they would simply because better stuff has come out. That only happened because the not-so-great games left their mark and taught everybody what worked and what didn't. ;)

I'm a little confused about where this thread is heading (are we just recommending anything from any genre now...or FMV/adventure?)...so I'll just stick to the FMV/adventure genre.

Just to add to the list...I remember a Dracula mystery adventure (not the side scroller). It has been a looooong time since I've played it, but it seemed pretty good.

I'm a huge Snatcher fan...but even I have to admit it is slightly over hyped (and priced). Not by much mind you. It is just one of those things best entered with the expectation meter set to "mild" rather than "earth shatteringly high". It still has one of the all time best intros imo (except the corny 'cybe punks' dedication).

Rise of the Dragon is another must own for the system. Great game that can be found at a great price.

Now I'm just repeating what other people are saying. So I'll stop here. =)

I think I remember this game, but not what it was called. By any chance did it have Corey Haim in it or something? :)

Edit: You're right about Snatcher, too. It's great, and fun, but truth be told, there's not much of a game there. If you just try every command you'll come up with something. (Although, persistently bugging the game with the same command over and over can sometimes have really cool and surprising results!) Not to take any wind out of Snatcher's sails; I hold a really high opinion of it, but it's not gonna change your life (much).

You'll be happy with Rise of the Dragon; it's by Dynamix which is a Sierra offshoot. It's a point and click adventure game. It's in first person, but it plays just like any other Sierra game. Willy Beamish is also by Dynamix, and fits your description to a T. It's a bitch to play though; the load times are so bad I even had trouble with them when the game came out.

I've never played Dune, but I think the Sega CD version has some elements of that style of game, as well. I could be totally talking out my butt, though.

If I think of any more I'll let you know!

It's cool, isn't it? The music is awesome. there's some animations, I remember, but they're mostly in the backgrounds. That was one of the first games that came out for the machine, and that kind of game was why I bought it. Unfortunately games like that got scarcer and scarcer as time went on. When interesting games (like Panic or Dungeon Explorer) did hit our shores, they were released with virtually no marketing muscle which not only destined them for obscurity, but made them tough to find from the get go.

But enjoy ROTD! Hope you don't beat it too quick!

I can't think of too many other games like those two, but you should experiement around with whatever catches your eye.

Actually, come to think of it, thoug it was kind of rushed, Psygnosis' version of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein was sort of a Sierra game made for consoles...try it and you'll see what a mean. It's actually really surprisingly good, and probably pretty easy to find (it was published by Sony Imagesoft.) You might like it.
