Ok heres a simple question which to me has a simple answer...N64.

IMO, N64 was way better obviously due to the games. I like the controller a lot better and who could forget the great multiplayer moments you had on the machine.

Being a GC owner in Australian might have contributed to why I dont like GC much as well....N64 was quite popular here and Ive got lots of mulitplayer N64 memories but , no one here has or likes GC :(

I dunno about everyone else, but every major Nintendo on GC has dissapointed me besides SSBM.

Super Mario Sunsine (What a disgrace,, all the levels felt the same)
Zelda:WW (A great game, but a bit easy and not what people wanted, im talking about the cel shaded graphics)
Mario Kart DD (The game made some imrprovements, but overall feels weird to me and not like a Mario Kart game should feel like)
Luigis Mansion (Too short, not enough replay value)
Pikmin (Too short, not enough replay value)
Final Fantasy (The GBA requirements killed this game)
Metroid Prime (not sure if I should put this in here, because I dont like Metroid games at all, but oh well)
Mario Party 4 Ive only played 4 from the GC versions but I found it hard to find any mini games I really like, MP 1 owns:)

Anyway I dont want to turn this into a huge GC bashing or anything because I do own the system. Im more interested in hearing what you people choose/have to say.

2 to 1 so far, N64 in the lead.

What must I say...I love the N64.

Christmas of 1996 was unforgettable

Nintendo wasn't kidding when they dubbed it "The Fun Machine" on the box art

N64. I love everything about the Gamecube, but I guess I have more memories on the N64. I love more of the games too, but there is still a few years left for the GC.

Gamecube without a doubt. The N64 had maybe 5 gamees worth playing, and the controller was absolutely awful. I might go so far as to say that the N64 is the worst post-crash major system. *ducks*

Let's see.

1. Zelda: OoT
2. Zelda: MM
3. GoldenEye (hasn't aged perfectly but was the Halo of its day - and more)
4. Super Mario 64
5. Super Mario Kart 64
6. Conker's BFD (so I hear)
7. Perfect Dark
8. F-Zero X
9. Paper Mario
10. StarFox 64
11. Smash Bros.
12. eXtreme G 2
13. DOOM 64
14. Mischief Makers
15. Blast Corps

I'm tired...but that right there is a huge selection of games worth playing, especially back then for a cash-strapped individual like myself!

I really have a hard time coming up with as many GC titles I've seen that impressed me so much. Haven't played Metroid Prime much, for example, and outside the GBP disc that game has had the third most playtime in my GC.

We almost got Maximo and Final Fantasy VII, too...

N64....sure the GC has the new flashy graphics.....but, i have so many N64 multiplayer memories...Bond and Mario Kart were amazing

and who can forget super mario 64 and the ocarina of time

it was just an amazing system.......it provided me with a whole hell of a lot of enjoyment

I would argue that the only games worth owning or investing any major time in on the 64 are:

1: Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2: Zelda: Majora's Mask
3: Conker's BFD
4: Mario 64
5: Mario Kart 64

I really disliked both Bond and Perfect Dark. F-Zero X was too fast to be enjoyable. I thought Paper Mario was too shallow to hold my intrest. Hated Smash Brothers. Yeah, pretty much I didn't like the 64. But, to each their own. I love my 3DO despite the fact that everyone else seems to dislike it.

Are you kidding? O_O I can list atleast 80 N64 games that I consider good and worth playing.

Well, make no mistake - I had to sit and think a while to come up with my own list.

Certainly a far cry from the SNES days.

I agree that the N64 wasn't such a good system. The only good games it had were the exclusives like the Mario series, both Zeldas, and Super Smash Bros. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were fun as well. I also enjoyed a few 3rd party titles such as Shadowman and Wetrix, but the rest of the system just lacked any decent titles.

Seriously. I was out of collecting/playing during the N64/Saturn/Playstation era. When I got back into it I started playing some of that generation. And by and large the only games I found enjoyable were the Saturn and PS1 games. I think a large part of that can be attributed to the horrible layout of the N64 controller, but some of the games people rave about I just didn't enjoy. I don't like FPS on consoles so Bond and Perfect Dark are out. I thought Smash Brothers wasn't very much fun as it just turned into a button mashing affair. Sorry to all the N64 lovers, but I'm sticking to my guns. I personally would take the Gamecube over the N64 anyday.

GameCube is cool, but N64 owns it. I'll probably get more into the GameCube once it's dead, though.

I could name a TON of N64 games worth playing... It's easy to claim that there are only 5 games worth playing on the console when you've played maybe 10 games tops for it...

Gamecube mainly becouse of the N64s fuzzyness. It messes with my brain.

Opps fixed it.

It is definately a system that I didn't notice it back in the day, but alot of the games are fuzzy as all hell.
Still like the N64 better as of now. And that's not even counting all the memories I have on that system. It's really the first system I could afford most of the games I wanted, actually almost every single game I wanted. I did trade alot of my games in though, this was before I "really collected" though.

Apples and oranges.

It's like asking, "What do you like better, the Sega Saturn or the Dreamcast?"

or

"Which do you like better, the NES or the SNES?"

I know it's just a discussion based on opinion (as are most of the threads here), but what's the point?

Are you trying to show that one is better than the other because some enjoy one more than the other?

If you're going to compare, at least make it a valid comparison.

What do you like better, the NES or the Gamecube?

Silly.

Gotta put my 2 zenny in on this one.

N64. All. The. Way.

Of course the controller will always be up for debate as that's a preference thing, but that's for any console. I personally found that the N64 controller just melted into my hand while the PSX controller was a pain in the palms-especially when it came out with dual shock.

Industry wise, the N64 created the standard, hardware or software, the console industry has followed to this very day:

-Computer controlled rumble capability
-4 controller ports (not exactly was a pioneer but it was the only other system at the time that had four ports after the Atari 5200)
-analog stick (again, not a pioneer but it definitely proved it was "the way to go" and the industry hasn't looked back since)
-Elements in games that has been copied since (Z-style targeting from Ocarina of Time comes to mind).

As for software: exclusives are one of the big selling points of any console so one would hope the game would be good. And N64 has a good lineup:

(see Ed's list and now add:)

Excitebike 64
All of the WCW/WWF THQ/AKI wrestling games
Jet Force Gemini (kind of an acquired taste)
Space Station Silicon Valley (very acquired taste but very original)
The New Tetris (automatic 4 player-just add controller)
Mario Tennis
Mario Golf
Kirby 64
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Gauntlet Legends (a twist of the arcade game, it's got adventure elements where you can turn off your power ups to save and maybe sell later)
Banjo Kazooie & Tooie

Gamecube to me is a disappointment, from launch to current. Every Nintendo franchise game just felt *too* rehashed. With the SNES the 16 bit sequels put some new spins and made an old formula feel new again (see Super Metroid, Zelda 3, Super Mario World, SMW 2 for example). The GC just made the N64 sequels pretty. There have been some games that were good and felt fairly fresh (Prince of Persia, Animal Crossing, Super Monkey Ball, Zelda: Wind Waker-to a point) and a small handful of games look promising (the next Zelda, Star Fox) but the controller does put a damper on my enjoyment. Bean shaped buttons, a big main button that seems to say "hey moron, press THIS button to do stuff", a spongy control stick, a second stick with even worse control, analog triggers that don't feel analog and an overall feeling of slight discomfort.

I picked the GC because for me it's a better single player experience and I'm mainly a solo gamer. If this were a poll for which system of the two had better multiplayer capabilities, I'd have to say N64 all the way.

It's not any more silly than any other comparison post, regardless of reason. State your preference, tell us why. If you don't like the thread don't read it. Sheesh.

Oh yeah, and I love the GameCube, although I think that both the N64 has better multi-player games. The GC is on top for me for the Star Wars Rogue Squadron games and Animal Crossing, not to mention the Game Boy Player, which is what I use my Cube for mostly nowadays.

I went for the N64. I love my 'Cube but it just isn't the leap that the N64 was. Obviously that's not Nintendo's fault it's just history - there was no massive leap to make technologically when the 'Cube was released.

Has Mario64 ever been bettered? I don't think so, it is the epitomy of 3d platforming. Goldeneye and (my fave console FPS) Perfect Dark are still really strong games today. Turok - when the bad guys came running round a corner with their legs going from under them nothing looked that realistic before. All incredibly immersive games. And I found the controller much comfier than the PS controller. I mainly play N64 under emulation these days, that means no more blurring, yeah!

N64 for the games and controller. Don't have much experience on the GC seeing I don't like the controller too much.

EXACTLY! There was no real massive leap on the technology side when this gen. of consoles came out. I don't see next gens. being that much better either. I don't see how they can, I mean until gamemakers make games that look 100% real.

Ray-Man
Conkur's Bad Fuir Day

pop into my head. I think of Gamecube and I struggle to think of anything I want to play again.

There won't be any jump. We'll still have a vocabulary for graphics glitches, and we'll still have "wow" moments playing on a new console.

We actually already have games that look "100% real" - sometimes, anyway - and any improvements will be slight. We're down to the law of diminishing returns, really.

NES = Model T
SNES = T-Bird

PS2 vs. XBox = would you like GPS with that sir?

Out of the two, the N64 has given me way more quality game time.

Not to mention the N64 actually had a D-Pad worth using.

That's a tough one. I'd have to go with the Gamecube because it has a better variety of games in its library, IMO. Super Mario Sunshine isn't even close to being as good as Super Mario 64 though...
