I took advantage of the Circuit City deal last week, picked up a Cube along with Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime, an extra controller and the $20 mem card. I was also looking for a good Svideo multi-system box and found a brand new one by Pelican, it supports 5 consoles with either normal or Svideo hookups, plus it actually has RF on it (I don't use that part though) -- all for $19.99. To compare, over across the store in the A/V section there was one that only allowed 4 systems and it cost $39.99.

So for the past 6 days I've been playing mostly Metroid Prime and a some Mario Sunshine. Hard to believe for some, but I have never played a Metroid game before on NES or SNES (I was a Genesis owner exclusively back then). I'm also not a big fan of FPS games. I bought Metroid Prime because of strong word of mouth, and the desire to play something different.

Well, MP is awesome stuff. It solves the 'empty room' problem of FPS games by regenerating creatures after a while, just like in the 2D games of old! I love the sci-fi aspects of the game, and the visuals and atmosphere are top-notch. You must use your scanner to find weak spots of enemies, or to learn history or "Chozo lore", or to open locks. I've played a number of hours and I'm only at 3% completion! This game has got to be huge. A workmate is at 25%, he says it ramps up in difficulty quite a bit.

The game slightly reminds me of how I felt playing Powerslave on Sega Saturn years ago -- this isn't a pure FPS, but has platforming aspects where you must jump (and its done well) or turn into the morphball to access new places. In Powerslave you'd through grenades to knock out soft sections of walls & get secrets & goodies -- you can use morph bombs or missiles here in Metroid Prime, too.

I investigated Retro Studios -- members from the old Quake and Half-Life and Turok teams also work for RS -- no mention of any ex-Lobotomy members though, who did Powerslave.

I also am enjoying Mario Sunshine. I have about 5 or 6 Shines so far. The waterpack game mechanism makes the game fresh and not just a Mario 64 rehash. Nintendo knows how to make interesting bosses -- the latest one was a tentacled squid thing -- you must yank off its tentacles to defeat it! When he slaps 'em down to hit you, get close to one, press and hold B, and then pull back on the stick. Mario pulls it away from the creature, it gets taught and then snaps right off -- ouch! Then you have to get up close and pull another appendage off which is attached to the front of it -- I'm not to sure if this is it's beak, nose, or ... another appendage. What a violent game! ;)

Seriously, Mario Sunshine is a great 3D platformer, with nice paint and water FX in many different ways, and loads of variety from what I've seen so far.

I have a huge back catalog of Cube games to catch up on over this winter, including Spy Hunter (dying to try that one), Spider-man, Rogue Squadron II , both Monkey Ball games, and Waverace.

A question to you GC PSO players -- are you guys on dial-up or broadband? I've never even seen a broadband adapter in a store for GC.

Congrats on your new system! Hope to see you on PSO soon.

I'm on BBA but if the network is anything like the DC version, PSO with a modem is just fine too.

Heh, last night I got the mario sunshine package with mem card for 189.99, then I got metroid prime, star fox adventures and another memory card which got me a mail in rebate for 50$, and two magizines tossed in. Total came to 300 prior to the mail in rebate. Needless to say, I'm a VERY happy camper. I was worried I wouldn't like the Gamecube once I got it home, but OMG I COULDN'T STOP PLAYING PRIME!!!! I have yet to put Starfox in!

I would've gotten Metroid Prime a week ago but it was coming by UPS and I was on afternoon turn so they came while I was at work. I had to reschedule them to come on my next day off...which is today. It just arrived along with a memory card, player's guide and a $10 off coupon for a Wavebird controller. Yes, I took advantage of that Metroid subscription offer from Nintendo Power. Now I have to scoot over to K-Mart and pick up that controller (last time I checked, my local Wal-mart didn't have one in stock...

Oh yes, I also got that Nintendo DVD today...it's a good day to be a GameCube owner...

I neglected to mention that I got a PLATINUM Gamecube. It's a really nice color; the controller is also platinum. I bought a black 2nd controller.

I never liked the purple color of the original console. I'm glad they have different colors available.

I have a black one. It matches everything else in my entertainment area. Platinum would clash, forcing my room design scores down and preventing me from finding good things when I dig holes in town.

Another possibilty is that I'm getting real life confused with a video game.

Left Nutz: Super Moneky Ball 1
Right Nutz: Super Monkey Ball 2

Seriously. Grab them first. Tons of replay value.

If you go broadband, you need a router. Trust me.

Dear god I didn't know they made such an animal. This will solve my cord problem (I'm so sick of reaching behind my TV and yanking cords). I've got to get me one of these...

if you can afford it, go to radioshack and get their brand. i had a pelican one and the lines were terrible, the radioshack one is high quality.

I *really* don't see any visual problems with it. As I said , I don't use the RF feature (which requires you plug the unit in).

I had my DC hooked up direct to the TV SVideo -- can't see any difference thru the Pelican. Just thought I'd pass on the savings.

I've also have a video source selector box. I've had it for over a year, works great.

The First four games I bought when I got My (Black) Gamecube:Super Monkey Ball, Super Monkey Ball 2, Resident Evil, Metroid Prime, all the games a great and I love the system. :D

Anyone know where I can get an S-Video cable that's longer than 6 Ft.? So the power thingy is only if you use the RF jack?

I got a Gamecube about three weeks ago. My first games were Phantasy Star Online, Super Mario Sunshine (came with the unit), Super Smash Bros. Meele, Luigi's Mansion, and Metroid PRime.

I feel sorry for you dude. I'd've snapped a *long* time ago if it wasn't for switch boxes.

I'm going to go looking for one that has fibre optic inputs as well as the normal RCA and Svideo inputs. It's time my audio makes the same leap as my video (I've got a new TV but I can't hook it up until I get a new entertainment unit)

Know what's really sad? I have my entertainment center wired to switch boxes and I STILL have to yank cords! I don't have enough switch boxes! *swears like Yosemite Sam* Guess that comes from having 12 systems, 2 VCRs and my DVD player all wired to my TV. I wired systems thru my TV, my VCRs, my switch box, my RF, and STLL I have 2 systems left over that I have nowhere to plug em in, so I have to pull plugs from the switch box to play em! Arrrrrrrrgh! And I don't even have an XBox yet!

The only problems I have had was with lots of RF.. When I re-organize this spring all the RF units are GONE.. I will have to modify the 7800, 5200,coleco, etc or buy whatever power Video expantion I can find.
