Question about archival preservation

Hey all. I recently aquired a pretty rare poster. It's from NWC 90, and is in great condition. The only problem is I have little experience with posters. Should I take it to a professional picture place to get it framed? Or should I just use a cheap picture frame from walmart? Would it be acid free? I don't want any yellowing or aging. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I donno where to post it.

I would get it professionaly done if money is not an issue.

Since you said you had little experience with posters you are running the chance of screwing it up and probably tearing it.

As for walmart, They most likely will be acid free but Im not too sure...it should state if it is on the product itself.

It sounds like you really love your poster. That being so, spend the cash to get nicer framing.. just shop around first, and pick something that would compliment the colors in the poster.. and not some decorative frame either...

Money is an issue, but not a big one. If it'll cost under $100 I'll be ok. It's pretty big tho, 40 x 36, so it's probally gonna cost alot :( .

OH!! :eek 2: I had no idea it was that big. It will be expensive to mat and frame something that size. :o

I've protected a few posters over the years by just having it shrink wrapped on a piece of cardboard backing. Cheap enough also.

How would I go about this? Is there a place where I can go to get this done? I haven't shrinkwrapped anything before. One problem with that is that plastic isn't archival safe, so it will eventually damage the poster. It'll take alot of years.

I've had posters and animation art Professionally framed numerous times before. Last one that I got that I went the whole nine yards on (UV glass, acid free backing and the works) ran me $140 for a 24x32 framing (this is framed sized, not poster size). With something that big, its not gonna run under 100 I dont think anywhere. You can always take it to a place like Michaels (its a Craft SuperStore) or someplace that does good framings, and price one out.

Actually, if you buy the sectional frames, it's pretty easy to frame things yourself and make them look nice if you take a little time. You can but some posterboard or something like that to mat it if you'd like, and it's a LOT cheaper. It might not look as good as paying $100+, but if you take your time you can get close.

Micheal's is a way to go with framing. I had a concert poster print framed 30x40 for under $90, with glass, backer, and 2 mats. Talk to the framing person really nicely,dress up, and tell what you want to spend, and if they like you, you'll get a great price. Orginally, the frame would've been $200.

If you go the cheap route and hang the poster on the wall, remember that gravity cause the poster to become wavey.

Also, ask about dry mounting.

By coincidence, I just happened to be researching poster archiving techniques a few days ago. I found out that "archival quality" is a vague term and you can't always trust that things labeled as such really are. At the very least, anything that touches your poster needs to be acid-free.

Seems like a place called D. King Gallery (http://www.dking-gallery.com/posters/sale/Mylar.html) is pretty well known among rock music poster collectors. They sell Mylar-D poster sleeves that are supposed to be completely inert.

If you're really serious about protecting and displaying the poster, I'd save up for archival framing. It's not cheap, but it's worth it in the long run. Michael's might be able to do it (just talk to the framer first). You might buy an acid-free art portfolio to store the poster in the meantime.

No, do not dry mount it. That is they way to make the poster virtually worthless. Essentially you are bonding the poster to the backboard forever. It WILL NOT be coming off. Letting the poster float freely in the matt will be much better than dry mounting. It won't be perfectly flat, but you can still remove it later.

And XJR15 I'm suprised at you. I know you did not just say "find something that compliments the color" LOL White matte (white or bright white, I am not a fan of cream under any circumstance) Black mattes will give the visual effect of darkening the posters colors. A nice, black sectional frame would work. The thing that will set you back is the glass. Make sure the matte board is acid-free, museum board is the best.
