I bought a complete copy of this down at gamezone and it was not worth the 30 dollar price admission. I don't know how the game compares to the snes version, but the tgcd version has kinda ugly graphics, bland gameplay and a really bad scrolling effect imho. Of course this is just what I think ;D.

I'd get it just for the soundtrack alone.

If you can understand japanese, I'd recommend the PC Engine version. The american voice acting is horrible, with the japanese one having some of the best voice acting ever.

The TG-16 version is MARKEDLY better than the SNES version. Playing the SNES version gives you the impression that it's this clunky, bizarred, rushed little adventure game with cheesy music and graphics. The TG-16 version will prove that's not the case. It's really well presented. Sure, the voice acting kind of sucks, but that's still the case with 90% of games today. Go for it; it's a classic.

The SNES version blows compared to the CD version. Get the CD version. Excellent game. Don't let those people who seem to forget the game's time context convince you otherwise.

If you do decide to get it, I'm pretty sure I have a loose copy lying around somewhere, and can give it to you for far less than $30.

It's worth it for the soundtrack alone. Still my 2nd favorite soundtrack of all-time.

Yeah, that arranged (and live) soundtrack with music spooling off the disc is a long-gone phenomenon. People settle for Midi or something these days, and it sucks. This game and Ys' I and II were the biggest arguments I had ever seen for jumping format from cart to CD. Unfortunately, I think that way of doing the music is gone.

That's another reason to get this game, in fact; it represents a way of doing soundtracks cut scenes that was only around for a brief time.

It's up to you. If you're looking more for better music and can deal with the choppy scrolling, then snag the TG16 version. On the other hand, if you want smoother graphics, and still want the good music, gofer the Genesis version. The Genesis happens to be my favorite version out of the three 16-bit releases. Sure, the music isn't redbook quality, but the translation is surprisingly good. Call me crazy, but I actually prefer a few arrangements on the Genesis better than that of the TG16. Trust me when I say that the sound for the SNES game completely sucks Adol's balls. I know it seems a bit unbelievable, what with the Genesis sound chip being considered inferior to that of the SNES, but trust me on this one.

Yeah, the Genesis version is better than the SNES one, especially in the music department. (That soundtrack was so good, how is it possible that they fucked that up?) The TG-16 version has a lot of cinemas and features that aren't found in any cartridge, however.

The translation of the SNES version is actually more accurate. I haven't really played through either version in years so I haven't compared the actual quality of the writing.

What people in this thread are saying about cd sound is sadly true. Some of the tracks on Ys I and II Eternal story for the PS2 are almost as much of a travesty as the music on the PSX version of Lunar 2.

Coincidentally, Taito's remake of Ys III just came out a couple days ago. I hope they did a better job with the music than Digicube.
