New school vs old school

I was at my local Toys r us looking for deals on games, and I noticed that no one was playing any of the Xbox,GC, or PS2 display systems. There was quite a few people milling around the VG section,too. Instead , everyone seemed to be all over the Plug-and-Play game display. Seriously, there was a line! I love seeing younger kids getting into the old atari games.
Has anyone else noticed this strange phenominon?

i like all old and new games for the right price !!

I'm about half and half. I love retro, but I love newer games coming out as well.

The plug n play tv units got SERIOUS play where I work until we hooked up the p.o.s xavix machine that everyone laughs at. It is awesome to see the younger generation enjoying the older stuff.

It’s quite simple for me - newer games are WAY to involved. I enjoy the old classics. The newest game I have been heavily into was Star Ocean for the PSX. Currently I’m playing Chrono Trigger for the SNES (I’ve never finished it before :embarrassed: )

Back to topic. It's great that those TV games arte getting more people into classic gaming, but now that means more peeps to compete with. What they need to make now is a trakball one, cause trying to play Missile Command with an Atari joystick don't cut it, glad I have is for the 2600, with trakball :)

That would be cool...but how about if Disney and one of those games-in-a-joystick companies got together and released a Tron set? Play the original game AND Discs of Tron on your TV! I would buy that in a heartbeat.

At a mall over the weekend I saw a kiosk selling those plug-and-play things with bunches of built-in NES games. They had 4 set up to play and every screen was in use, usually with several more people standing around waiting thier turn. 20 feet away, EBgames had 1 customer and nobody playing any of the systems.

The biggest reason I think is that people have gamecube / x-box / PS2 at home, but have sold / have never played the older games.

Oldskool for sure. I play my NES regulary and dispise my GC. I dunno, I guess I dont have the time or energy to play time consuming/complicated modern games. Also I just dont like GC/PS2/Xbox much.

I think you're right. Plus the fact that you can play a whole game of Pac-Man or Galaga (or whichever retro game is on display), is probably more interesting than having only access to a demo or a time-limited game on any of the new consoles.

Also, could it be that parents are drawn to the plug-and-play games? "Look, junior, it's Pac-Man! I used to play it all the time when I was a kid!"...
