Games pre-1992 - NO

Games post 1992 - YES

1993 pretty much was the year of region locks being introduced.

A standard Game Genie will suffice for getting them to fit in your Genesis.

A GG is also useful as there are codes for it that allow some region locked games to work on a Genesis.

Don't forget the differences in cart sizes as opposed to alternate region cartridge ports. The Japanese Mega Drive carts are a bit wider than the Genesis cartridge port, so unless you want to physically widen your Genesis cart port, you'd need an adaptor - unless you have a Genesis 3. The G3 cart port is wide enough for MD games, but you'd still need a converter to get past the lockouts on some games (Golden Axe III and Alien Soldier come to mind here). On top of that, Game Genies don't work on G3s.

Here is a very comprehensive FAQ for import Mega Drive gaming on a Genesis:

whoa whoa whoa, so if i get a genesis 3 model...i can play imports? (with the exception of just a few later games)

so is the genesis 3's avport and ac adaptor compatable with the genny 1's?

i always see genny 3's loose for about 10 bucks (and i know there's one for 8.99 at my goodwill loose with 6-button).

what shmups are incompatable with the genny 3 model?

and i'm not worried about game genies, as i don't care for them anyways.

Yes. Well, except its more than a few later games...its almost all games made after 1992.

No, the Genesis 2

I'd be worried as that is the only way to play some games on a US system without modifying your system. A GG costs far less than one of those region switch converters.
